In the end I'm not sure what people want from a request. Would they rather have it done quickly, albeit not the best. Or to be waiting for threads after threads on the off chance someone really good does it.

In other words, if having it done quickly and really well done is the most desired outcome; what's better: not getting your request done or having it done poorly.

Not getting it done is better. I mean, I know its mean to say, but getting a delivery thats half a sketch that the artist gave up on but still posted and you can't even really tell what is is just the worst. You can't rerequest without looking like a dick, but the delivery isn't going to scratch any itch you had when you made it.

Thats assuming its outright bad.

My art's been stuck on autopilot for like a solid year now, at least. I feel like I'm not getting anywhere, despite drawing every day. I watch other artists who were once my peers suddenly flying ahead of me with new improvements and ideas, and I'm stuck here reading books and watching tutorial videos on youtube, saying "yeah, I can apply that!" and still never making anything that isn't static as fuck and blatantly from reference.

Sure, drawing and studying every day means my forms have gotten better, but attention to forms without any life just means I'll be stuck in Legoman tier forever. How do I get better at drawing with.. fuck, I don't know, energy? I do an hour of gesture every day and it feels like it all goes out the window the moment I start drawing something else. Nothing I put out feels like it has any life to it. It all jsut feels like I'm doing the same thing over and over, even though the characters and poses are clearly different.

I need advice. It just feels like I'm always going to be mediocre, and I don't want that. I want to improve, but I feel like I've hit a wall where I don't know how to get any better, and that wall is (unfortunately) one every other artist around me already seems to have been able to climb.

I get what you mean, what worked for me is to stop drawing from reference, yout level will drop in the beginning but it'll force you to stop relying on references and built muscle memory.

As for the gesture thing, exagerate as much as you can, I've noticed that when I start to add all the construction, anatomy and details, my drawings lose gesture so I make some really extreme gestures. Then again if I do to of a exterme gesture, sometimes the anatomy won't fit. It's all about pushing until I know when to stop.

But that's my personal experience, it may not work for you, but at least I tried.
