Personally, I prefer art that looks like it could have come from the actual show, so I stick close to model. Don't expect much divience from the original designs. No random titcows.
This is actually one of the sticking points for me in regards to the classic designs - I've never cared for original Velma's hair, but I'm not willing to change it if I went with that style. Plus, I really dig the Mystery Inc style, but the original look has had 50 fucking years to ingrain itself so... I dunno.

It grows on you. The art in general isn't on par with DoD, DmD, BB, SLS, etc, but it's good enough that it doesn't bother you. The daughter being super cute makes up for the dad being a mongoloid. I think because it's not as sharp.
Also, there is about 15 lines of text per render. Other games are more like 5, give or take. This way, the author includes a lot more story instead of wasting time on renders that don't do anything except change eye direction and junk. He/she started doing that a couple of version ago. Pretty ballsy, but I think it works great. His updates are huge, story-wise ... it kind of puts into perspective how unnecessary tons of art and animation is if you can just hook the reader to the story.

Depending on your configuration you may not need a whole new computer. Graphics card is the most important, it has to be nvidia and it needs as many cuda cores as you can afford. Iray is well suited to parallel computing and having all the gpu cores work on rendering brings huge improvement over 4 or so cores cpu.
GTX 1080 is an obvious choice, but if you can't afford it then GTX 1050 is the cheapest option that is still worth trying.
