We had an interesting topic going regarding what we think about Tsukushi re-tweeting and buying porn of his own characters. I'll pick it up again:

It's fine, it's his decision. However, I think it's a bit of a shame.

Even in Japan, there's a clear line between authors who associate themselves and their professional careers with porn, and those who don't. Although it's normal and almost everyone watch porn from time to time, explicit sexuality is considered very private in modern society. Especially if it involves fetishes such as Tsukushi's pedolust, which people react very negatively to if they don't share them.

Porn by nature is very carnal, usually setting aside all established rules regarding good storytelling and in-universe integrity to please the viewer. Setting aside integrity to please the viewer is more generally known as "fan service", a term I guess everyone here are familiar with. Even though it seems people have more tolerance for service in Japan, porn is often taking it too far outside of small, niche fan bases.

For whatever reason, working with and around porn therefore permanently "marks" your professional career. Murata, who draws the manga adaption of One Punch Man, is horny as hell when he draws and mentioned in one of his live streams that he would like to try drawing porn professionally. However, he also lamented that it would lead his career down a "one-way road".

I think Made in Abyss is good to the point where it deserves and could attract a lot more readers, but Tsukushi's open pedolust won't let that happen. I know a lot of people who I'd love to reccomend MiA to, people who by no means are normalfags, but still would be scared off. I think MiA would be just as good without Tsukushi stroking his dick all over it. Hell, he could even keep most of the nudity and sexual curiosity if he just changed the tone and presentation of it a bit. More readers = the manga will stay alive longer, get better and higher-budget anime adaptions etc.

Sure, but I was talking about how they're seen by their readers, and how the content they produce is received. Hence why I referred to Murata's comment about "leading your career down a one-way road". Sure, hentai mangaka might be famous, successful, and enjoy a high professional status. But if they suddenly have a change of heart and try their hands at something non-pornographic, they will have a much harder time getting taken seriously by the readers, and signing up with publishers.

The world is not black and white, and obviously there will be edge cases like these. However, Mine Yoshizaki never really did hardcore stuff, it was ecchi with full-frontal nudity at most. Those were doujins made way back in the 90's before the internet became popular, and Yoshizaki hasn't, to my knowledge, continued making them after Keroro Gunsou became a hit in 1999. You don't see him re-tweeting porn of his characters these days, that's for sure.

I'm inclined to agree, but still, those kind of weirdos are often very independent. I just can't imagine an autistic person like Tsukushi understanding normal human behavior and interactions that well after spending all his life getting taken care of by his mother. MiA is his first published manga that I'm aware of, he's certainly a late bloomer. Perhaps he spent an entire lifetime preparing by drawing (he's a damn good artist too) and reading stuff at his mother's home while fapping to shotas, until he reached a point where he could successfully replicate it?

I think perhaps the very nature of having difficulty in interacting and socializing with human helps him write fictional character. The author probably struggles with human interaction, but learns to do it. He actually has to study human's interaction, feeling, and thinking to apply it in his life. Therefore, he has some deeper knowledge regarding it and the nuissance behind it. A person who socializes naturally cannot put it onto paper in a creative fictional work. A normal social person can't "create" characters and " build" unique social interaction and action because they only ever use their own natural social skill that only apply to themself. Hence, many authors take a bit of shortcut and make the main character their self insert because they don't truly understand other people other than themselves. A social person can be told to sit down and write a natural dialogue between two different unique character and they will make it completely awkward.

Reasonable. I don't think he's *actually* autistic, because people who are autistic for real have great hardships even understanding basic facial expressions and nuances in everyday interactions. There are few lines which directly describe Beowulf we a character in the poem but plenty of circumstantial things that implied his character. The anime did a pretty good job of toning down the nudity. Rather than take it out they just drew it very non-sexually. I wouldn't be uncomfortable showing it to a normalfag. The thing is Ozen's hairstyle, which is similar to the Principal's, isn't primarily due to the Abyss directly affecting her hair; she states her hair is like that to hide "her scars" from "twisting the skin off your head".

Some other interesting things are that while Ozen's hair and the Principal's hair are black and white, Prushka's is white and green, and Nanachi's is pure white.

If the 5th layer's curse does turn your hair white though, it makes it more obvious that Lyza's hair is just naturally that crazy since her hair is still a solid blonde.
