I wonder how graphic they'll make this scene? All the blood/mucous stuff in Riko's eyes really got me when I read it the first time, I can only hope they won't try to dance around it with quick cuts or camera angles or something.

Riko hugging Reg here was way cuter in the manga.
>>
>>161217096
It doesn't protect them, we've seen it affecting her, its just that being able to see the field makes it much easier to avoid accidentally ramming your head through the thickest parts at high speed. Its basically a built-in, superior version of the techniques normal humans have to develop through painful experience, like how Prushka learned to survive the stairs. Bon wanted to be fluffy to survive y2k, which presumably doesn't work like the curses, or at least that's what he thought.

He did do it the instant he had enough cartridges. He couldn't do it immediately after the discovery because he needed a lot of them and had to groom every single one into loving him enough to willingly become a disposable meatbox.

Ozen lesson soon, the PV pictures should give an idea of what will be adapted, hopefully they at least get to the flashback
>>
>>161217096
>Couldn't she have built her home anywhere, unless becoming a Narehate doesn't actually protect you from the curse at all... in which case what the fuck was bonezone's obsession with becoming one about?
There are cases of Narehate demonstrating what appears to be immunity to the curse (most recently, Faputa), but we've no indication that it's a guaranteed effect of the transformation.
>Also, if he wanted to be a Narehate so bad, why didn't he just do it immediately after his cartridge experiment proved successful?
Because he wanted a cartridge of Mitty's/Prushka's caliber which would allow him to receive the Abyss's blessings while absorbing all the curse into itself.

>>
>>161218937

> in that she overcame the 5th layer's curse by just concentrating for a bit.

I thought she's able to go through the curse 'easier' than others just because she knew where the weak points were, so she'd be able to deal with it better than normal humans who just go up to wherever they need to without knowing how thick the curse is.

God no, they need to have it be harsh, it's basically a horrible connection with what Ozen said, that the lower layers are much more dangerous and that Reg and Riko are not ready for the hardships, that reality hits them hard with Riko literally almost dying when they first get to the fourth layer, hell, if it weren't for Nanachi, she definitely would have.

It's Reg and Riko meeting harsh reality, and if they dance around the gore the scene will lose all impact.

Anon, your sense of perspective is terrible. Also, I don't think you really understand how much more massive an object like a cube gets when you lengthen its sides.

>Take an object relatively close to the same position and perspective as the cube, like Ozen's hands, so as to avoid foreshortening/lengthening issues as well as artistic license.
>Guess the relative length of the hand (on the typical hand, the length of the longer fingers is usually around the length of the palm).
>Use this distance to measure the cube relative to length of the hand.

If you simply look at the length of the sides, it seems like a small difference; an increase of only 2.5 hands, or ~36%.

However, if you calculate volume, you get a massive difference between a side length of 7 and a side length of 9.5; to be more precise, it's nearly a ~150% volume increase.

That being said, if you just look at the pics, the anime box is around nipple height on Ozen, whereas the manga box is significantly lower, maybe bellybutton height. Interestingly enough, the distance between bellybutton and nipple is roughly around 2 handlengths.

Yeah, Abyss isnt that bad. Any force 17th century and onward could conquer Abyss given theyre committed to it. The fact that Abyss lacks a good logistical network is the only point why its considered dangerous. Of course lone adventurers or small groups can get shafted by local fauna but organized and drilled force could beat their way to the 5th layer.

Only problem I can see is the morale and lack of thereof, especially if you face the flower fields . Though Im sure that would be overcome with enough effort given the technological/monetary advantages Abyss offers. I mean they just would have had done this instead of doing retarded solo expeditions.

>Go into Abyss with 10000 men or more.
>Drop supplies from the safe first floor
>Map out the floor slowly. Find out about local fauna and how they fuck you over.
>Learn to evade local fauna and their territories or wipe em out with sizeable force supported by infrastructure at the first floor
>Garrison the second floor
>Proceed to mine out the fucking place
>Upgrade your troops with artifacts
Rinse and repeat

>But anon, going upwards from rest of the floors induct severe conditions
Yes, thats one of the major obstacles for the current system. However decent logistics makes the problem lot less serious. Instead of bleeding out you might ride a primitive elevator. That goes for artifacts too, the whole system is lot more efficient if transporting artifacts and people is faster. The main problem in excavation was climbing up with heavy artifacts and duress which is solved by a logistics.

Also central command and strict powerstructure makes distribution of information much more efficient. Most fatalities seen in manga are because delvers delve into shitty places they shouldnt be delving into. If someone finds such a place his information can be efficiently distributed unlike in the current system. It would fix the most important casualty source in Made in Abyss

tldNapoleon would mine the place in 20 years

>Go into Abyss with 10000 men or more.
>Drop supplies from the safe first floor
What supplies? Orth has no arable land. You're relying entirely on imports and abyss wildlife, the former of which is extremely expensive for 10000 men and could be snatched up by pirates and privateers before it ever reached your men, and the latter of which could possibly be hunted to extinction. Not to mention that the locals also need to eat and their white whistle patrons might not take kindly to a fucking foreign army moving in.
>Learn to evade local fauna
Your only source of food that isn't the cheap shit hardtack you may or may not have managed to ship to the middle of god-knows-where? The only barrier to malnutrition?
>wipe em out with sizeable force
a bunch of starving dudes
>supported by infrastructure at the first floor
the starving dudes are hunting tamas precisely because the guys at the top are starving and need food sent up you fucking idiot
>Proceed to mine out the fucking place
Just fucking mine it out? It's that simple? The opportunity cost of mining is starving because you didn't hunt, but you can't hunt without strong enough artifacts gained from mining. Bondrewd needed effective immortality before he could construct the idofront, and he did it with the aid of laser cannons and zombies. Starving dudes with picks won't be able to dig their own graves.

Throwing more men into the equation solves nothing. You need at least a squad of white whistle fireteams with cheat relics to get anywhere in the abyss. The problem is that white whistles have a habit of fucking off to the bottom of the abyss when they get the chance, and you won't forge any more white whistles if the existing white whistles make the abyss a comfy love-hole.

If that thing is about 1.75-2m per side, and the density is similar to marble that thing is 20 tonnes. If it's similar to steel, then it's over 60 tonnes. That said, if Ozen really does have the strentgh of 120 000 men, then she could lift almost 16000 tonnes (which is more or less a fully loaded Baltimore class WW2 cruiser complete with 1100 crewmen).

So that thing must weigh even more for her to have to pick between it and the bell.

>What supplies? Orth has no arable land. You're relying entirely on imports and abyss wildlife, the former of which is extremely expensive for 10000 men and could be snatched up by pirates and privateers before it ever reached your men, and the latter of which could possibly be hunted to extinction.
We see Orth sustaining a sizeable population already, there is no reason why it wouldnt sustain 10000 or more men if we do social reconstruction.

> Not to mention that the locals also need to eat and their white whistle patrons might not take kindly to a fucking foreign army moving in.
We are not talking about new population moving in but a force discovering and going into abyss with Government support. By force I mean an army which is of course backed by their respective government. Of course foreign intervention is a whole different beast but that has nothing to do with the difficulty of Abyss itself. Point was that Abyss can be conquered by a unified force.

>Your only source of food that isn't the cheap shit hardtack you may or may not have managed to ship to the middle of god-knows-where? The only barrier to malnutrition?
Given how there is a sizeable population above the abyss and we dont see anyone hauling food up, there is no reason to assume that food couldnt be hauled downwards. Food must be in somewhat abundance given we dont see orphanage starving which was a common occurrence at the time. Yes, there are slums but thats just poor planning from the government or lack of thereof.

>Just fucking mine it out? It's that simple? The opportunity cost of mining is starving because you didn't hunt, but you can't hunt without strong enough artifacts gained from mining.
Again people wouldnt starve if they do logistics to above ground correctly. Also with enough men you can bring your own supplies with you.
>Bondrewd needed effective immortality before he could construct the idofront, and he did it with the aid of laser cannons and zombies. Starving dudes with picks won't be able to dig their own graves.
Again you going with the starving, thats the only point you have. And no, nobody forces you to build a huge city at the fifth level, thats impossible. However you can conquer levels before it and gear up. Doing a huge base at the end of your logistics chain is retarded anyway.

>Starvingstarvingstarving
The fact that we see a huge city around the abyss means that they have the food to sustain themselves. Sure, they dont have farmland but one of the most important source of food for humankind has been the sea. There is no reason why you couldnt fish or import food for artifacts. Sure, it wont regenerate profits for the first few years but that is why I specified "a committed force"

>no reason why it wouldnt sustain 10000 or more men
They import cheap commodities like rice and hunt the rest from the abyss, there is a chance that you could fish for food. The only reason orth can import is because they export relics, which along with whatever supplies you ship in is prime pickings for piracy. It's not a feasible supply chain when 10,000 men are on the line.
10,000 men will hunt the abyss creatures and any fish to extinction. You'll also be turning your soldiers into fishermen just to try and get enough food.
10,000 men can't live off nothing but rice. They sure as fuck can't mount an expedition in a treacherous land on it.
I hadn't considered it before, but they would be able to cannibalise each other, at the expense of their morale. But then why wouldn't you just go in with less men?
>if we do social reconstruction
Yes, you can do quite a few things if you achieve a pipe dream.

Those kids are basically indentured servants, they're only even allowed to live there if they can/eventually delve around the top layer for relics.

Even then, by the fact that in some dialogue we hear Riko say to Reg that 'remember when we SOMETIMES had meat' meaning that it was likely a rare occurance and they probably had to live off of rice/vegetables, regardless, the only meat they ever got were scraps from shit hunted in the abyss.

An organized force can certainly get far (as evidenced with Bonedad and his Praying Hands), but that was a smaller elite group armed with unique powerful relics. There are several problems with your "organized raid".
>Learn to evade local fauna and their territories or wipe em out with sizeable force supported by infrastructure at the first floor
I can't speak much of the 2nd layer since we haven't seen much of the fauna there, but I'm not seeing how the average delvers (even in organized groups) would be able to deal with the packs of flying monstrosities in the 3rd layer, or all of the psychic beasts of the 4th layer, or the occasionally invading creatures of the 6th layer.
>Garrison the second floor
>Proceed to mine out the fucking place
>Upgrade your troops with artifacts
As far as we've seen, all truly useful relics in regards to combating the fauna are located on the lower levels (the abundance of seemingly useless egg artifacts in the Seeker Camp testify to that, at best you'd only be able to arm a handful of delvers)

Not to mention, Lyza went down with a relatively massive team (the largest we've seen thus far), and they got killed off anyway (and I'm pretty sure Ozen and Lyza wouldn't bring incompetents that couldn't handle themselves).

Still, this got me thinking. I'm pretty sure there must be some kind of "Cold War" going on with the larger countries; it'd make sense that powerful countries wouldn't want one country to be have a monopoly of the Abyss, thus they fight through using delvers.

Plus, within the story, the lack of logistics you keep going on about is likely done on purpose; to make it harder for foreign groups to delve, which is why there is also a lack of easy to access info about maps and safe routes, instead all being relayed by word of mouth from trusted veterans like White Whistles. Don't mistake the shitty eikaiwa school mercy wages that Muricans get for real Japanese wages. The people are still as rich as they were back in the 80's. But anime are still niche products. Yes, teenagers love them, but teenagers have no disposable income to speak of and they usually grow out of anime before they get one. They don't count.

What you mouth-breathing internet psychologists call "crazy/retarded people" are actually collectors. The entire market (with the exception of manga) is custom-tailored to the collectors and their needs. BD are just another piece of merchandise, they can be that expensive and there is no reason to lower the prices, because the collectors will buy them. The stupid, spiteful opinions of hicks like you, who have neither the culture nor the income to buy collector's items, are not even remotely relevant. Now crawl back into your trailer and pray to Jesus on meth or beat up your sister wife or do whatever else you people do in there.

Also, riko's goal is just getting into the bottom alive means that she's not looking for any relics. The relics are there but aren't just littered in random place. They are probably hidden in a few spot. Rare artifacts will in fact attract other delvers who will confront them. Dangerous wildlife also attracts to relics for some reason as well. That's why the expedition to just the 4th layer requires a big group and most die off anyway. You don't get to stay off the dangerous route if you need to go exactly where the bell was on the 4th level and have to deal with anything in the way

What if all the encounters with white whistles so far were set up deliberately by Lyza in order to train her daughter from the early age to become her successor? We all know she is bonkers yet has a strong maternal instinct, considering how far she went in order to save her only daughter, but she had to know that Riko wont be able to resist her invitation, so I think she also had to make certain precautions to ensure that Riko gets as far as possible. I doubt that either Ozen nor Bubblegum would refuse to play along as a favour for a fellow whistle and they both taught Riko valuable life lessons.

Did you run out of smug reaction images or are you getting butthurt?
>the city itself is well above 10000 people
With plenty of women and children; they aren't ALL trained soldiers. Hell, large portions are slums where people eat like shit.
>Its small potatoes
Of course, if they're swimming there naked.
You need ships to sail everything there.
You need carriages to bring the supplies to the ships and from the ships to the men, and animals to pull them.
You need to bring construction materials and tools, and weapons for the men to use.
You need a lot of officers to achieve your beloved logistics, and they don't grow on trees.
You also need to up the taxes on your citizens to fund this mad scheme, which would probably only add to growing fires of revolution due to a hopelessly incompetent government.
10,000 people have a lot of baggage, and unless you're a giant empire transporting supplies over land >>161237274 you can't afford that.
>Read it again
Okay, and?
>But you have resources for such group
again, not every resident of that city is a trained soldier, with all the consequent demands of a trained soldier. It "should" support a high population is justification about as concrete as Riko's stool.
Orth can't even get weapons, for fuck's sake. What select few can just go ham with pickaxes. And you want to arm 10,000?
>Do you not know how armies for most part of history fed themselves?
Not across oceans, onto barren rocks, and down into hellholes they didn't.
>Abyss is a known location with a trade route
We don't even know how reliable that trade is, and you're betting it can sustain 10,000 men.

You ought to have figured out that you send fucking landing parties to establish things gradually and not risk starving 10,000 people, but that's not even feasible because there's such a thing as competition. That's how the association of prospectors that are the delvers arises, because a nation's army can't move on the abyss without starting a war for it.

Another anon here, these posts are about as useful as arguing over the power levels of different characters. They are 90% conjecture, and assume that the author of the manga has no idea what they're doing. If it is so simple to "just do something", why hasn't it been done long ago? Maybe there's a good reason for it, such as the catastrophic attempt to descend by airship, leading to hundreds of dead? We know next to nothing about Orth and its politics apart from these few things:

-Delvers are a small elite of the society, raised into their role from a very young age, much like the warrior castes here on earth, before the nationalistic army reforms. They're usually not even allowed to descend into the 2nd layer until they've become Blue Whistles (around the age of 15), and by this point they already have years of delving experience. They're not just expert survivalists, they're probably also among the best mountain climbers in the MiA world, since they go up and down several hundreds or even thousands of meters, on a regular basis. Despite all this, just like the warriors of old, it its heavily implied that their life expectancy is abysmal. The odds are not looking good for armies which have no kind of experience with these environments.

-Orth is incredibly protective with its unique competence. Maps are intentionally vague so that foreign powers won't send their own exploration teams. Any attempts to flood the streets with foreign soldiers would likely not be taken kindly, and let's not forget that the city is essentially a huge fortress, due to how it's built on the top of a circular cliff.

>>161237274
Do you guys even know how these armies kept themselves fed and supplied? Not only did they pillage everything in sight, they practically enslaved entire cities or even whole regions, taking control over local farming and production. Whenever huge armies had to do long treks over barren or hostile environments, they died like flies.

Yes anon, however women eat almost much as men.

>Of course....
Anon, you do realize that a fleet supporting 10000 did exist? How do you think people hauled goods off from colonies, enstablished or supported them? Galleons themselves supported hunread or more crew members during voyages. A 16th cent nation can easily transport, sustain and replenish force of 10000 plus logistics. For christ sakes single gallion can support a ton or some two tons of cargo. Navies and companies had many hundreads of these

You simply downplay capabilities of old navie

>again
Clearly you missed how we were talking about a force at least from 16th century. Yes, theyre capable of arming measly force of 10000

If orphans dont starve which was a common occurance its safe to assume that food is plentiful

>Not across oceans...
Tine to look up Spanish colonization of the Americas. Logistical undertaking for Abyss IS small potatoes and they did it through a huge fucking ocean. By the way, americas was a hellhole but they did it for loot.

>Not across oceans
But they did. Galleons were mostly used for transporting goods including food. If single ship can haul a ton of cargo then transporting lifestock, whest and other salted foods is very possible. Plus fish based economies were a real thing, fish was and still is an important part of human diet.

>we dont know...
Why wouldnt it be reliable? Given how the trade sustains a city which can total over 10000 I have no doubts about it

>...
Sure, my original post wasnt that clear but I never assumed someone was dumb enough to think that I was proposing sudden landing with 10000 men. Of course that force requires food etc but thats given and completely doable alongside with building infrastucture.

>>
>>161241089
No, a slight incline is a threat, period. You can have all the mapping inthe world, but you are still using a sizable force to get it and losing said sizable force. Having to retreat from a big nasty upwards can get you killed. Tripping and falling into a lower position could be certain death. A big nasty KNOCKING you upwards might end you. Flying big nastys with jaws big enough to pick you up and carry you upwards exist. Freefalls to your death are onmipresent because there is selcomly large patches of flat ground, instead we get outcroppings of the rockwalls that are precarious enough for a small group to stand on, much less a large expeditionary force. Animals can read your movements before you move. Animals have adapted to the most hostile environment on earth and are all superhippos with horrible poison bits and superhuman reflexes.

Equating the americas to the abyss is fallacious on a multitude of levels. You're presuming that the climate would be the same and your little fleet wouldn't get lost to the sea, and that your prospective empire is in a position to even start sailing to Orth. Spaniards sailed west to reach the americas, for fuck's sake. If we assume Orth's somewhere close to japan and that the made in abyss world map matches ours, then it's an entirely different journey for not!Spain with more stops. That's a lot of fucking presumptions either way. Furthermore the Spaniards landed on America, which was a hell of a lot more forgiving than the abyss.
You're making a ton of assumptions and assertions without any proper basis.
>>161241089
>only a threath thanks to lack of information about geographical features of abyss.
No, it's a threat because you have to go up them, accidentally or intentionally, or you spend your whole life going deeper and deeper into the abyss.
If you avoid all the ways up, you only go down. Again with the fucking "muh logistics".
>Yes, fauna is a bitch but that is why you use an army to fight it.

Jesus christ, you fucking halfwit. Incompetent people don't survive long in mia, that much is clear. Of course it's different in the real life terms you're obsessed with, where fucking retards like you get to run around freely.

Your entire argument is moot because the second one 10,000 army goes, another follows, and they end up fighting each other instead of the abyss. Then the world gets involved because they want a slice of the action at home or away and a world war starts, so everyone keeps their hands off the abyss in the first place by not sending 10,000 strong fleets due to the threat of mutually assured destruction. Cunt.

We don't know what sort of relics that bitch has, except the pins. It stands to reason that if she could find 120 of a single type, then she also found some other shit along the way. It's also fair to assume that she doesn't show these other relics because she is confident that she doesn't even need them. Also worth mentioning is that bonezone needs to physically collect the relics off his slain body, which leaves him open. And the blessing is only good for one of his lives. Hard to say the outcome. I feel like if each had time to prepare they'd showcase relics we haven't seen before, maybe giving boner the edge. Ozen has untold wisdom from her ages of experience though.

The problem with guns is beyond a certain point the animals can read movements and intent. Even if they've never seen a gun, they can tell that you intent to fire it at them and will be dodging the shot before you've fired it. Massed fire will work but we are talking a massive ammunition ependiture per animal.
>>
>>161241670
Volley fire won't work, these things can tell exactly where you are aiming and will be dodging perfectly every time. Sure, you'll probably tag them repeatedly over several volleys, but grouped line fire will get their ranks decimated extremely quickly because lol psychic fauna.

Drones completely invalidate the Abyss.
Also, modern firearms and logistics would make setting up bases and infastractute on the 1st and 2nd layers a trivial task.

You could do the argument that 1st and layers before it arent worse at all. Seafaring logisticswise its a sound argument to equate two.

>No...
What stops people from mapping points between layers out? Nothing really. Sure, accidents happen but I never claimed Abyss wouldnt claim casualties, I dd talk about casualty reduction. And yes, logistics make it all easier. For example, have your friends at second floor haul you from third with you strapped into a rope

>starving

Yeah, most people didnt survive long thanks to the nature of delvers. Who thought that going alone into nomans land creates excess casualities?

>your argument is moot
It really isnt given the original post was about a organized group of humans gunning for abyss(albeit a very very big one). The fact that you talk about other factions is irrelevant when main discussion was centered around abyss itself, not forces surrounding it.

You might as well claim that winning a bet on boxxing isnt probable because some other guy robs your shit. Youre taking thirdparty forces to a discussion about two parties, unknown force A and crater itself

From what I recall, the force field does not only refract light to the point where objects become invisible after a few hundred meters up or down, but all kinds of electromagnetic radiation, making radio communication impossible. In the latest chapter Reg's communication device stopped working when Faputa took him for a hike upwards.
>>
>>161241690
Even if you know exactly where it will be fired and exactly when it will be fired, dodging a bullet simply isn't practical. You're 'already moving' to get out of the way, and then the shot goes off and hits you, because it's moving meters per second and you're not.

Even just basic geometry can tell you why mindreading wouldn't help here. The person holding the gun needs to make much less of a movement to adjust to their target's attempts to stay out of the line of fire, meaning the target's movement inevitably gets overtaken and falls into the line of fire. Just knowing where they're aiming doesn't mean you'll be able to evade.
I swear people talk about guns like they think the movies and games are reality.
>>
>>161241642
>We don't know what sort of relics that bitch has, except the pins. It stands to reason that if she could find 120 of a single type, then she also found some other shit along the way
I think the opposite, IIRC manga mentions that she had to buy out her first one for a rather high cost, so I think its most likely that she spent most of her funds to get all the pins she currently got. I'm sure her armor is also a special relic tailored for tanking purposes, but she generally seems like a specialist that would dedicate their attention to advancing in one single thing, while Bon is more of a swiss army knife jack-of-all-trades generalist type.
>Also worth mentioning is that bonezone needs to physically collect the relics off his slain body, which leaves him open.
Where are you getting that from? It was never explicitly shown, only thing he took off the dead body in that scene with Prushka was the mask, and I think the general consensus is that there are just multiple copies of Sparagmos, which Nanachi also ponders about when she says "was he holding on to it or are there multiples of it", and it was also used to cut off Reg's arm. Its also mentioned that there are several battle-oriented Praying Hands, although their numbers are limited.
>>
>>161241759
If a bag of meat moves faster than a bullet its dead anyways. God bless newton.

>ammunition ependiture
I aknowledge that, it would be great. However, I think you can restock faster on ammo than animals can breed
>>
>>161242354
A series of transmitters solves that.
That's why setting up infastracture on the first layers is important.
>>
>>161240598
Not that anon, but these "logistics" only work if the routes can be kept safe. Large scale supply lines like you suggest are just asking to be constantly attacked by the mega-fauna, some of which (like the Crimson Splitjaw) are straight up way too large to deal with convention weaponry that foot soldiers of the currently observed technological level would carry, and that's not even taking into account the psychic beasts that invade up from the lower layers (the insects are one example). White Whistles and maybe Black Whistles could deal with the threats for a time, since they're armed with powerful relics and experienced at understanding how to fight these creatures, but a supply line would require 24/7 protection over a long stretch of land going down. The logistics of supplying the proper sentries with adequate firepower (to deal with both local and invading fauna from the lower levels) and other necessities needed to keep constant watch the supply routes is simply too much. Sure, Bondrewd's notable for having created a secure route to the 5th layer, but even that route is terrorized by powerful mega-fauna, most notably the Tamaugachi. (For anyone questioning whether that's the same route, Bondrewd's known for carving a safe path to the 5th layer, and the Kenzan Kazura where the beast prowls is known as an important route to delvers on the 4th layer).
