It's serviceable, but totally soulless compared to Kino S1. The old style had a dreamlike appeal that meshed perfectly with the parablesque storytelling. Everything was hazier and less specific, which worked perfectly for a series with almost zero "lore" and barely even any continuity. It was also visually memorable. Nothing else looks like Kino Sq; this new style is amazingly generic in contrast.

There are enough shows from the 70s to 90s that got BD remasters so I wont waste my time on some show that lets me count the pixels. It's not the character-drawing style of the LN illustrations that makes them shine; it's the skill in the artistic techniques such as shading, texture, etc., none of which carries over the key visual. No one expects animation to look as pretty and smooth as an illustration, of course, but it was a bad decision to mimic the LN style when the anime would necessarily be unable to capture any of its charm. Guess I'm a minority, but I didn't really enjoy the original anime's designs too much, though I didn't hate it either. The character design from the first anime didn't really age well in my opinion.
With this you can at least see Lerche tried to follow Kuroboshi's newer artstyle, but held back a bit, which I'm okay with. Whether that's a design choice or technical incompetence is unknown, unless there's a trailer out or something.
I have yet to watch Zvedza or Princess Principal to see how a more faithful adaptation of Kuroboshi's art would look, but I'm okay with this.
Maybe a little worried, maybe a bit concerned, but okay with it.

With the LN artist helping the studio and having some experience since the first anime with anime character design it makes sense.

Principle Principal and Zvezda have the same character designs by the LN artist so it makes sense they'd all look similar to KnT.
