I don't, I just check the script to see if my version matches theirs for practice. At best it's mediocre and at worst it's all over the place. It's as if two different translators worked on the script without consulting each other or having a second look at it before handing it over to the typesetter. There's times where they translate arguably complex sentences correctly but then manage to get the simple stuff wrong. Or because they couldn't find an accurate translation they localize it slightly (see above kitchen sink translation). It's better to learn from others' mistakes but going through a CR script is a fucking mess and I have no idea why those people are getting paid because their work lacks professionalism completely. It's almost as if they're fansubs. But comparing work that stems off of enthusiasm to a rushed script just doesn't sit well with me.

I personally don't recommend doing an East Asian studies degree as you'll have to stomach through hundreds of hours of extremely boring secondary module lectures about politics and economics and whatever they feel like putting up for the year. My uni is pretty good and our department is probably the poorest there is in the entire uni and it pretty much shows. I'm not sure how other unis are but unless you're willing to pay premium and go to something like SOAS London or some other specialized uni then I feel like it's a waste of time and money. You can easily learn Japanese faster and more efficiently at home if you're motivated enough. The only thing you might be missing out on is a placement in Japan on your third or second year which is really the most attractive thing about the entire degree. If you're serious about taking this kind of course then you should do proper research on the available departments. Make sure they don't use "Basic Kanji Book" to teach at least, that book will make you hate then language.

I've never been one to pay much attention to fansubs, so someone give me the basics:

Is Coalgirls good? I avoid them because of the ridiculous filesizes, and I've heard Commie doesn't translate accurately and likes to fuck around by adding memes. Horriblesubs apparently just copies from CrunchyRoll, not to mention being part of the cartel, but when you look at it, you can't beat their filesizes (500~600MB for a 1080p episode) and release speed. This is all based from what I've heard on /a/, I don't know japanese to confirm if the subs are faithful or not.

It's cheaper to license a show when it's already finished and people don't care anymore. Netflix thinks this is a winning strategy, and they have good reason to considering that the majority of their content was gained the same way. It's only recently that have started making their own shows and have the ability to release them at any rate they want, so they release those weekly.

Whether or not they'll realize they need to splash a bit more cash and start releasing anime weekly to actually compete is another issue.

What I do is I just put a lock on everything at about 6 PM until 8 PM and just study during that period. It's obviously hard in the beginning, but if you stick with it and form a habit then it's only going to get better from there. But make sure you stick with it, give yourself a reward for every time you do it like a good meal or some candy. Hard working is really about just tricking yourself into a mentality.
I personally don't use wanikani, if you want a decent application you should try "Kanji Study" on android, it's actually pretty thorough and can teach you kanji using the progression system they use in schools there. It also has a dictionary and some exercises in it but those aren't that much useful over running an anki application and writing them down for better memorization.

You can also draw on the screen and it will recognize your kanji if you know the correct stroke order, which is cool I guess. It's really one of the better applications. I think there's a free version on the store. It's a great supplement for anki reps, give it a go if you want.

Actually, that was the main problem of fansubbing. Having after effects for attacks means you have to have one person to make them, what means the subs have to pass through various hands to release the episode.

To that add logos, signs, karaokes, styles and other fancy shit, result is an episode the could be done in a day is released 3 weeks after because it needs the work of 5 different persons with different schedules.

THAT's what killed fansubbed, they were slow as fuck, and they were slow because they added a lot of unnecessary shit. People can wait a couple of days to watch the episode rather than watching horrible, but they wouldn't wait months, just for a couple effects.

I don't care what anyone says, the age of "Professional" Subs is way better than the FanSubbing time. Yeah in some cases, we got high quality rips and subbing but for every 1 we get, we receive like 10 doses of drama.
And also adding to that, now that the few fansubs that are still living have a common enemy (Netflix), most of them put aside the bullshit drama that was plaguing the scene way back when.

I like gg too but they are probably super dead.

Anything said about a sub group here is probably an exaggeration to the average viewer. People nitpick everything. Commie may have the perfect exaggeration of direct translation and extra sauce for 95% of a show but people cry to all fuck when they throw in a single joke.

But i could just have my nostalgia goggles on. Been reading HS subs for so long even with old shows. HS is definitely awesome to have but they are missing some love and care that other subgroups used to have. Yeah I use HS and I don't give a fuck. I watch an episode one time, and that's it, I got the idea, I understand what's going on. I won't rewatch that shit for years. I'm not waiting for some other group so they can change one word. I want to watch it now, so I can talk about it with my friends or come here and talk about it.
