I watch live action movies and TV as regularly as I watch anime, and maybe it's just me but I notice that Japan's portrayal in mainstream entertainment is rather negative in recent years. There's a lot of exciting scenes/stories set in China and Korea, but there are no longer such scenes. Whenever Japanese characters show up, they're antagonists. It's kind of funny.
