I genuinely dislike Imaishi's stuff. Even his one-off episodes in Trigger/Gainax stuff leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Its not the LOLSORANDUMXD stuff that people like to criticize him for that makes me dislike him, its how he can't be subtle and all of his characterization always lean towards the same archetype. Panty & Stocking were really refreshing as they were really different from anything Imaishi has done, and Luluco was nice before he tossed her relevance away for Reference of the Week.

I'm a fan of Hetalia, which was pretty largely popular several years ago compared to now, but I hate the yaoi fan fiction and art that a lot of the fanbase has done. Hopefully, some here object to that filth. It's a fun, often humorous show that plays with historical themes and national stereotypes.

I meant the characterization of his characters. The terrible toilet humor was still there, of course. When I think about it, its only a problem with series with a lot of action. Its just that they all default to "hot blooded", even when he's just an episodic director the characters default to "hot blooded".

I think Abenobashi is a great example. The first episode was, essentially, SoL. Both main characters had their own worries and their personality was laid out pretty well. Then episode 2 hits, Imaishi's episode, and its piss jokes, main girl being used for fanservice and hot blooded protagonist piloting a mecha. There was a HUGE disconnect between the characters of episode 1 and episode 2 that it almost made me drop the show.

Ah, I don't really see "hotblooded " as typically Imaishi characterisation. For sure he often defaults to that during action scenes, and he especially relies on hotbloodedness as a sort of deus ex machina in his climaxes rather than have things make actual sense... but rarely are his characters consistently hotblooded, it's only for a short duration of his shows. Simon isn't particularly hotblooded for the majority of Gurren Lagann, Ryuko isn't particularly hotblooded for much of KLK, she comes across as something of a punk at first but quickly becomes quite cute, Luluco isn't hotblooded, Panty is actually hotblooded quite a lot, Stocking isn't all that much - that's how I see it.

To me, Imaishi's typical characterisation in basically everything he's done except his two long-form shows (TTGL and KLK) is that of a sort of anarchic irreverence, and this is in order to facilitate his his breakneck pacing. This comes through a lot in single episodes he's directed, for example that Abenobashi episode (I agree it was too jarringly different from the first and should have maybe been a couple episodes later). The purest form of Imaishi's characters are in Dead Leaves, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, and Sex and Violence with Machspeed, and maybe his contribution to Cutey Honey.

If anything I think your problem with ep 2 of Abenobashi the whiplash of it coming so early on in a (relatively) low-key show. It didn't feel out of character at all, given how the kid was shown to be your average you guy who's into stereotypically boyish stuff like baseball cards and drooling over women. I don't know what to say about the fanservice since I liked it.

As someone who thinks that Imaishi-ness can become more than a little grating over a 2-cour series, I actually like his individual episodes a lot more than most of his other stuff since it acts more as just as fun change of pace using already established characters (Kare Kano, Abenobashi, Cutie Honey being the ones I can think of right now). Not to say that even TTGL and KLK didn't have some more multifaceted characters.

I will admit I was very aware of it falling into the "manic pixie dream girl" trope and it being very emotionally manipulative, not to mention having some pacing issues. But in spite of this I still found it quite affecting, I actually rewatched it straight away once I finished it, it somehow stuck with me for quite a while.

Despite all the death flags, I thought she was gonna make it right to the end, it felt like it was telegraphing it so strongly it that it was obviously going to flip it around at the end, I was really surprised when it didn't.

If I had to guess, maybe its characters always lose their subtlety in his hands. He isn't actually known for his subtlety after all. I enjoy it when a character feels like they have so much going on in their minds at all times akin to real people, but with Imaishi they feel more direct and overall caricature-ish. Not saying they aren't developed, just simple. Since I generally watch a show for its characters, it can get pretty boring really fast for me with Imaishi at the helm.

I'm surprised you think Ryuuko isn't hotblooded for the most part, then again I'd say punk and hotblooded can overlap quite a bit.

I don't think it was whiplash, as I didn't watch past the first episode of Cutie Honey out of disinterest, and I only learned it was an Imaishi episode much later. This may be a bit autistic, but I like it when shows are consistent on a narrative level. Imaishi episodes tend to deviate from it and it just kind of ruins immersion. I can see where you are coming from though.

I think Shield Hero is the best Isekai and I can't wait for the anime adaptation.

When I was young, when Bleach was airing during its first few seasons before the filler arcs (and around time of Soul Society arc), I had recorded Bleach episodes on my local DVDs in rmvb format. I would be able to fit ~60-70 episodes per DVD with around 70 MB file size average. I also did the same with the Naruto(again before the fillers). Saved me quite a bit of space on my HDD at the time and was able to watch anime comfortably with my home dvd + TV (when computer usage was limited and I was poor).

I unironically enjoy most things Gundam.
Having read the manga, watched the entire tv series, and viewed EoE, i still believe the only thing outstanding about Eva was it's designs. The rest was mostly overrated.
I enjoyed the Tsukihime and F/SN VNs but refuse to touch the rest of the Type-Moon works.
