The problem I have with this is not whether the elves are dicks for not handing over the medicine or not.

It is the humans going to war for it.

How important is one princess that you are willing to go to war for her, setting off a chain of diplomatic explosions and killing hundreds of thousands of both your own people and others? Nobility and royalty are often sacrificial pieces in political games to keep things stable, not the damn opposite.

That sort of stuff happens in a more high-fantasy universe where chivalry is super important. But there are two problems with that. First, that situation usually involves a small group of heroes sneaking in to do the right thing without causing a huge upheaval, not armies trampling all over shit. Second, honor, chivalry and all that good stuff is literally not a part of this manga´s author´s vocabulary, and therefore a laughable motivation. Sure, there may be SOME people in that universe that care about these things, it´s just that we got saddled with the amoral shit that is our loveable MC... but the mood dissonance in that case is simply too much to ignore.

And note that this only works if you don´t apply nobility and chivalry to a princess. In any other setting, unless she was a spoiled brat, she would probably be quite willing to sacrifice herself to stop all the shit going down in Re:Monter.

Likewise the humans going to war isn't fully justified in the current manga but if I remember correctly they are trying to stop a future outbreak of a disease they won't be able to cure so they are far more in the right than the narrative will let on.

This series is so incompetently written that I don't know why discussions get this heated.

So looking at Just this initial negotiation the elves come across as having no 'good' reason to deny it other than being assholes. The operative word being good because it was only because they don't like other races.

Well the mass production has less to do with sharing and would be more a product of humans and elves establishing trade. Elves apparently have no strong need to use this potion so it can remain a rare commodity. But if there were a need for more, and they or the other group had the desire too, we know it can be mass produced.

Having humans start demanding this cure-all for both the disease it treats, and other effect would increase demand and jumpstart research that the elves have never had to do.
