>site software is actually FOSS, so anyone can rehost if PantsuDev runs into trouble
>PantsuDev actually willing to distribute db backups

Now we just need account/upload functionality and nyaa.pantsu.cat will be a proper indexer.

Shame we don't have more recent sukebei db rips though.

Nice, but it's pointless if the mods don't come back

>Batches are currently being delayed but we will eventually release them. It is NOT discontinued. We will be releasing all the missing batches from where we last left off up to the most recent completed season.
>I am closing the comments here until things are back on track to prevent constant complaints and advertisement of other sites that batch our old releases. Our batches are completely different from the episodes released individually. If we were just batching old episodes then there wouldn't be any delays.

God, How I miss Nyaa these days...

It's great for past releases, which were graded by those mods.

It's pointless for future releases unless we get a good mod team going.

Filtering remakes is useful atleast, but pantsu only supports showing all remakes. Nyaarchive has the same filtering nyaa did and comments so it's much better at the moment.

"Hiding in plain sight" implies you're blending in a sea of other similar things. There isn't anything like that in Japan.

Piracy sites are hunted down ruthlessly by the authorities. Hiding in the middle of an empty parking lot while somebody is looking at it with binoculars is a better analogy for what you're suggesting

No, it's more like committing a crime and then hiding out at a police station. No one's stupid enough to hide there, so you'd never get caught since no one's even gonna look for you there.

The ONLY reason why many of the existing anime sites haven't been taken down is because japanese authorities don't have jurisdiction to fuck them up. It's not because they aren't aware of them. By hosting your site in Japan, you're giving them exactly that. But suit yourself nigger, if you think you're so smart.

Public giveaways are bannable for both the inviter and the invitee.

You just go on forums like MAL, look around for some private groups, and join them.

Eventually hint you'd like an AB account, and someone might message you with an invite.

Keep in mind there are <15,000 users though, so it may take a while for you to stumble across an AB user willing to give you an invite.

They open once every fucking neon purple moon. After banning of having enough inactive users that if the trend kept going it would hurt how the place runs.
I remember eyeing their login page for a long while and one day some anon mentioned it in /tg/ and i applied, they ask you to write a bit about yourself, ask what your favorite animu is and that's it. No idea if they ever actually rejected someone using this method, next day at night i had a mail saying i was accepted

When you try to access Ex it checks your cookies to see if you are logged into e-hentai, if you are then it lets you through, if you aren't it redirects you to a sad panda and it makes another cookie, as long as that cookie is active then you won't have access even if you log in after that, so many tech illiterates are stopped at that point.

Yes, but AB is practically impossible to get into. Public giveaways are bannable.

They made an announcement that it's basically a closed tracker now.

So even IF they have applications again, they will favor people with good reputation on other trackers.

The difference in this case anon is that Nyaa did not face any legal action when he shut everything down. No cease and desist letters, no EU court subpoenas, nothing. The guy just freaked out like some meth tweaker burning his entire lab down because he passed a police car on the way home to his trailer. Then he went nearly completely dark and hasn't talked about anything since. It means everything if you decide to build up a collection in the first place. Wanting to own hundreds of TBs of data means you need to be willing to invest the necessary money, time, and effort into maintaining it. If you are willing to torrent that much god damn anime, let alone watch it, then all of that time spent building up that collection entirely justifies the effort of maintaining it. You might as well just torrent something, watch it, and fucking delete it when you finish it or even worse stream all of your anime.

Except in practice it's different. If I want to rewatch and sites are gone I could download it from my cloud storage. Sure maybe Amazon could go down or stop me but that's a lot less likely than losing nyaa or similar.

Because
(1) HDDs will fail with increasing probability as time goes on
(2) You need more drives for redundancy so that when they do fail, you don't lose data (cf. RAID).
(3) Cost of electricity to run said drives and replacement drives for failures rises with more drives.

Let's suppose you want to store X TB.

Cost of a 2TB WD Red HDD is $90 (Red/Enterprise features are often necessary because TLER is needed for most large RAID setups). Bigger drives than 2TB generally have high failure rates because more platters.

Using RAID 60 doubles the amount of storage we need. So with X 2TB drives, we get an upfront drive cost of $90 * X.

Then there's the need to replace HDDs as they fail. From pic related, let's say 20% of drives fail by 5 years (that's being generous). So every five years, you have to pay (0.20) * $90 * X = $18 * X. Annually, that's $3.60 * X.

For Y years, we get X * ($90 + $3.60 * Y) as the cost of doing it ourselves (and that's not including enclosure costs, RAID card costs, or electricity costs).

With Amazon Cloud Drive, we get $60 * Y.

For hosting ourselves to even possibly be cost-effective, the self-hosting annual cost has to be less than the cloud annual cost, i.e. $3.60 * X < $60 => X < 16.7.

Meaning if you have more than ~17TB of storage, it's better to just use ACD because of drive replacement costs alone. If you have less, self-hosting slowly starts becoming more affordable.

Let's say you want to store 6TB. Since the number of drives is so low, we'll again be generous and say the setup is a 5-drive RAID 6, with 10TB total.

Upfront cost of 5 drives is $450, annual average cost of replacement is $18/year. This means it would take around ~11 years for self-hosting to be more affordable.

For 10TB at RAID60, it would take ~38 years for self-hosting to become affordable.

For 12TB at RAID60, it would take ~64 years for self-hosting to become affordable.

HDDs of course.

The point you're getting at is that since cloud services just run on HDDs, why would they charge you less than what it costs to store you data?

The reason is because you're not their only customer, and the remaining customers on average use much less data.

Amazon may make a loss on you specifically since you store a lot, but it's evened out by everyone else.

1. Delete them counting on unorganized and disparate community to maintain the torrents, links, trackers or whatever in case you want it again. Risky.
2. Invest in large personal storage, this costs $$$ and time.
3. Pay for cloud storage, this costs $ and you're counting on Amazon to not lose your data.

I'd pick 3. The guy who pays amazon $60 and stores hundreds of TBs is getting an amazing deal.

You can mitigate costs by buying refurbished enterprise drives. Some 4TB drives sold recently for $25 a pop.
Besides that, relying on cloud-based storage is utterly ridiculous. Neither the internet or third party services can be guaranteed to be reliable and static. I'd rather pay more to have control and actually own my data that hand it over to such service under license. Cloud is one step away from DRM

>Why would anyone need 230TB full of anime?
1080p HD encode at a good bitrate (12 Mbps) takes up a lot of space.

E.g. a single 23-min episode can take up ~2GB of space. A 13-ep cour takes up ~26GB. A 2-cour series takes up ~52GB.

So a 1TB is good for around 20 2-cour series in 1080p HD.

For BD raws you get ~30Mbps, which means episodes are 2.5x bigger (giving 8 2-cour series per 1TB).

I agree BD raws generally aren't worth it unless you really like the series. (If it were complete BD rips it would be 1.5-2x bigger because of extra features/languages, I left those out intentionally.)

But even YouTube recommends at least 8 Mbps for 1080p video.
https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1722171?hl=en

Really it should be at least 10Mbps, 12Mbps is just safely in the good range.

I know you guys are talking about BD in which case it's up to the encoder, but on streaming websites like CR the 1080p version has a much higher bitrate, so it looks better than 720p not just because of the resolution. Just saying to those downloading new shows from HS or something, 1080p in that case is worth it. If I recall correctly 720p on CR has less than 2mpbs while 1080p has more than 4.

I know I sound like a broken record, but this is far more important than plain nyaa. Animu can be recovered relatively easily. Porn is a different story. Lots can and will be lost forever without any sukebei recovery or a reliable replacement. You may also interview (well it's not so much an interview as checking that you're not an idiot) on Redacted.ch which is the next what.cd (almost a million torrents) and in the power user invite forums are threads where you can PM people an email address to have a jpopsuki invite sent to (there's basically 100+ untaken offered invites)
>>
>>156826865
>Redacted.ch
What do they have? What's the interview like?
>>
>>156820777
I think it's not downsampling to a set size yet.
So the avatars will display in whatever size they were uploaded in originally. Hence giant Griffith avatar etc.
>>
>>156826885
https://interviewfor.red/en/index.html

It's a music tracker.

The redacted interview basically tests the content on that website. The biggest area that people probably fail on is transcoding. You don't need to memorise anything but they will almost certainly ask to see a screenshot of your web browser to make sure you don't have the website open (just don't tell them and open it after screenshotting lol).

Redacted.ch is basically the replacement what.cd.

If you are new to private trackers, what.cd was basically a semi difficult music tracker. If you reached power user you could obtain invites to literally every good tracker on the internet because it had hundreds of different invites offered in the invites forum. And by offered invites I mean, message the user and you'll have your invite in your inbox (you didn't need to make friends with anyone.)

Now, a lot of trackers like animebytes have stopped all their official recruitment (that's official invite threads in the invite forums of other trackers) but when they resume invites it is likely they will recruit on redacted.ch.

Why?

Good private trackers have admins who are friends with each other (we call this cabal trackers). Right now there are only two trackers with good invite forums - Redacted.ch and Myanonamouse.

Myanonamouse has never had any good invites in their forums because they aren't 'friends' with anyone. It is likely that animebytes will recruit on Redacted.ch in the future because a) it's the new what.cd clone and animebytes recruited on what.cd in the past for as long as I've been on private trackers b) if they don't reopen invites redacted is the only way of getting new blood into their tracker

We'll have to wait ansd see but it does have a tonne of music and often japanese stuff too. Jpopsuki is obviously more specialised and easier too and you can get into jpopsuki via the hundreds of user invites via redacted.ch Power User.

You could give any number of torrents to be returned on a page. So you could ask the site to give you the first 900,000,000 torrents that contain the character "v". And of course, that'd grind things to a halt.
