I think the slow increase in queer/transgender works in Japan shows that the younger generation is starting to come around to the fact that differences exist and there are people who don't fit the mold no matter how well they pretend to. It's only half a joke. Eren may as well be full homo. Honestly this is the first time I'm ever saying this but I really do think he's gay. The author's said some questionable things about Eren's relationship with Armin, plus we already have three confirmed and two heavily implied gay/bi characters already. (Confirmed: Ymir, Reiner, Historia; implied: Kenny, Uri) I guess Levi too since Isayama, in response to getting asked what kind of girls Levi likes, said "Does he even like women?" but that could've just been fujobait.

Sounds very much like the standard hallmarks of the "ask no questions and I'll tell no lies" relationship that a lot of mangaka have with their BL-loving fans. Whether or not the author thinks they are, he can't confirm because he'll lose buyers. So the character's relationships stay in limbo for the sake of sales rather than any particularly compelling reason in canon. At least AoT has no romance focus so it can toe the line without delaying plot progression or character development. Still, nothing special with those two. Just an author realizing he has a sizeble audience that appreciates being teased.

I doubt Isayama cares about sales considering he killed off Erwin, the second most popular character and completely destroyed the most popular (second most?) pairing. Plus Eren x Armin is a very unpopular ship among fujos, but he shills for it quite hard. He's never cared about sales and in fact apparently argued non stop with his editor for an entire year because he didn't want to censor himself. And as far as I can tell, he hasn't censored himself, if Armin's molestation scene, Grisha's castration scene, Levi and Hanji's torture scene, and all other kinds of fucked up shit that even in Japan you'd only see in seinen are still intact.

It feels different from the way he seemingly jokingly said "hurr durr does Levi even like vagina". I don't know, I don't even really ship Eren and Armin, but even I realize there's something weird about it. If you think of Armin as a girl, for example, there'd be no denying Eren's in love with her. Not saying it's homophobia, we ain't tumblr here.

Fuck, sorry for the double reply again, I keep forgetting to mention that Eren's obsession with Armin is actually a very central plot point (unfortunately). Eren is no longer motivated by revenge but by his schizophrenic, dependent ass self and his desire to protect Armin, who he views as pure and perfect. He has an extremely black and white worldview that is also a plot point.
