>Why Does It Take So Long For Anime Movies To Come Out On Video?
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2017-04-12/.114692
TL:DR Japan wants to milk every last cent out of theatrical releases.
Funimation won't release it on DVD until next year.
>>155891259
Yes, this is peak smug.
>>155891348
I think a lot of Western license-holders are champing at the bit to release it on disc given all the positive buzz it's received, but they are usually forbidden from doing so until the Japs release their own copy because they're hugely paranoid about reverse imports, especially from North American distributors since they're the same BD region.
So it makes sense that the Western release would be as close to the Japanese release as possible since that's the only reason they haven't done so already.
Yeah but is the hot air really that detrimental to the engine/performance?
My brother had a filter right against his throttle body and based on the specs he recorded there was never a loss in HP even after the engine bay was thoroughly heated up in the summer.

At the very beginning of the movie, when Mitsuha is groping herself and freaking out in front of the mirror, that's Taki right? But in the next scene it's regular Mitsuha again. Does that mean there's a day skip between those scenes or is Mitsuha freaking out at her own body?
>>155891756
Funimation has sole distribution rights. There's a small chance it might come to Netflix in a couple of years. But they're moving to their own exclusive series.

Yes, there's a day skip, and then Mitsuha finds out about what Taki did that first day from Sayaka and Tessie during lunch.
>>155892010
>>155892046
There's a day that Taki spends in Mitsuha's body where she is in oblivion.
You may ask how that can be, to which I say it corresponds to the period of time between which Mitsuha gave her ribbon to Taki in 2013, and Taki returned it to her atop the mountain the next day (in 2013).
This anime tries too hard.

Like softest Marschmallows you'll ever feel.
>>155892115

>>155892226

Remember the order of events in the movie.
The first sequence is Mitsuha and Taki's dual monologues, which take place in 2021. Following from that, we see the sequence where Mitsuha throws her ribbon to Taki on the train (or 3 October 2013). The next day, 4 October 2013, the comet splits over Itomori, and Taki and Mitsuha are reunited on top of the mountain, where he returns the ribbon.
>>155892115
No, she simply doesn't really remember the day she spent in Taki's body because those first few days are much more dreamlike to them until they start catching on. Mitsuha says during that scene where they're explaining how she was being really weird the day before that she just had some odd dream of another life she can't really remember.
Skipping over the first Taki!Mitsuha day and showing only the aftermath is actually a good bit of condensed storytelling because it allows the audience to infer what's going on from the reactions of everyone after the fact, instead of just showing the switch and then the aftermath. They flip it with the first Mitsuha!Taki day by going into detail about the switch and then implying the fallout through the short scene afterwards.
In fact, despite some of the character reactions, it might not even have been there first switch. The whole beginning of the thing is muddied because neither really notices what's going on until a few switches have passed, based on their narration shortly before the montage.

>The whole plot hinges on the fact that neither of them saw the year at any point when they were switching bodies multiple times a week for what they implied was a month or longer. You're telling me they never saw it written on a blackboard at school, on tv, a newspaper, their phones or on some billboard in Tokyo?
Fair criticism, but still not compelling.
>And speaking of phones, Mitsuha never questioned that Taki's (not)iphone was a model two years newer than what was out in her time. She's country bumpkin but still, she'd be curious.
No, this matter required no suspension of disbelief.
>And they never called or texted each other at any point until the plot specifically demanded for it, despite it being extremely convenient for them to do so.
This has the feeling of a legitimate plot hole, until you spend a moment thinking about it. A lot of people have idiosyncratic communications preferences, particularly in this day and age of endless market segmentation. It's not the exception, it's the rule. Especially when it comes to phone calling, which has become increasingly marginalized due to various forms of texting being 1. More convenient and/or 2. Less awkward. Both of these factors are important for understanding why Taki waited so long to call Mitsuha, and why they never texted.
First of all, texting loses some of its convenience factor when communication turns to something really hard to talk about (practically and/or emotionally) like, say, living in somebody else's life and body for weeks on end. You can't really casually go back and forth about something like that over the course of the day. A diary is more conducive to thoughtfulness and organization in a way that Taki and Mitsuha understandably felt was useful. Recall that Mitsuha was inspired to write her first entry the first day they swapped precisely because of the organization of Taki's diary.
Cont.
The only issue having a pod close to a heat source is you will be higher running temps, no loss of power from that. If the car has a front mount then there would be no need to worry.
Only other issue that can arise would be combustion issues based on the density of the oxygen in the air, because if the air is hotter the density of the air going into the engine will be lower.
>>155892972
Indeed, the fact that it was the way they decided to start communicating is itself important, since people tend to stick to conventions that work. And really, it's entirely believable that when the swapping started, neither of them immediately thought "Hey, maybe I should try texting myself!" Perhaps you'll say "Well it would have been MY first thought," and that's all well-and-good, I'm merely saying that not everybody would think that way.
Secondly, having spent so much time in bizarrely intimate proximity to one another, it's tempting to assume that they would cease to have any hang-ups (heh) about direct interaction. One of the movie's understated achievements is that it demonstrates that this is not so. Ironically, it's exactly because they've spent so much time AS each other, and relating the trials and tribulations to one another through delayed communication, that direct contact becomes so daunting. Because in spite of all the time they've spent living each other's lives, they haven't gotten to know the other as their own whole self. This barrier is reflected in Mitsuha's apprehensive monologue on her way to Tokyo.
Personally, the closest approximation I can imagine to their situation is something between physically meeting a celebrity who you're a longtime fan of, and physically meeting longtime internet friend...or a fellow anon.
To conclude, ask again why Taki decided to call Mitsuha when he did. It's because it took the date fizzling out (and Okudera's intuition) for him to realize how comfortable he had become with Mitsuha, and that she was as fallible and human as he.
>>155892197
It's pretty good. Fairly standard for a guide book: a picture summary of the story, interviews with the VAs, Shinkai, Andou, RADWIMPS etc, character/prop/art setting.

I literally don't remember the MC's name from 5cm for example.
If anything, Kimi no na wa proved that he isn't just a one trick pony, by proving he can actually write and direct outside of his comfort zone. The leap in quality between this and say, garden of words is enormous to say the least.

>>155895123
Fuck off. Shinkai stays in his comfort zone, he's aware of it, and he excels at it.
He'll never leave that "fated romance" comfort zone either. This is a fact.

>>155896382
Sorry but if you can't see Shinkai's legitimate flaws, you have something wrong with you.
Shinkai is only good at directing what he's comfortable with, i.e. romance with drama.
You will never see him directing the next Angel's Egg, thus, he is a hack because he knows what he's good at an continues to do it.
>>155896497
having flaws and being a hack are not equivalent
stop using words you don't understand
>>155896497
>the next Angel's Egg,
>>155896544

>Agartha
>World leaders having found it before
>Quetzalcoatl
>The interior people's culture/religion

>Taki's hair is as spiky as the hedgehog

Shinkai is a hack because he can't do anything other than the that 'fated romance' genre, he's aware of it, and continues to do it because it brings him success.

>>155896688

>>155896628
>>155896688

Can't wait for the sequel
>>155896708
Being a specialist does not make you a hack
>>155896688
I'm not even that guy, but if you're implying that:
>a director can only avoid being a hack if he tackles other fields of genres outside of the one he's actually good at and building better upon
then that is just a subjective opinion on your end. It's good to have diversity, but it doesn't have to expand beyond one's own borders just to not be considered a hack by you.
>>155896703
Isn't it though? If I wrote a bestselling book about wizards, and it sold millions, I'd notice that, and want to write 6 more books because it worked.
This is a hack. Shinkai is doing the same with the Kimi no na wa-type film, and will continue to make the same bland romance type to appeal to the masses.

>So much of the movie is predicated on you not knowing what is going to happen
Is it really? I think it does the movie a disservice to say the appeal is down to shock twists instead of gorgeous animation, fun character interactions and the like.
Besides, they kind of gave away thetime traveltwist at the start anyway
>>155897924
I mean there is a saying that every artist is ultimately trying to express one point and every work is just a different angle or a more refined attempt at it. I don't think its a bad thing he has a consistent theme. Actually, I think watching 5 cm makes watching Your Name better, because its a greater catharsis.
>>155897823
I don't think there's anything wrong with doing so, it's about the emotion you get from experiencing the story, the visuals, and the audio.

Ha ha, wrong. It's such a hit in Japan because of the red thread romance type it is, plus body swapping has always been a popular notion in Japan.
>>155897823
The story is such an intriguing mystery that I was too busy focusing on the plot and rooting for them to "win" that I couldn't digest everything that had happened. It was all a wonderful blur,as if it were a beautiful dream. It was only the second viewing that the emotional impact hit me with its full weight.
>>155898303
No one. I just think people should stop praising Shinkai as some sort of directorial genius.
>>155898369
No, there's something else there for you to be so upset about this.

Godzilla was about unity against mankind's own mistakes, and Your Name was about living to the fullest past mistakes and tradegies.
Same inspiration, different messages, and completely different movies. Both are still the highlights of 2016 though.
>>155898273
Shin Godzilla is the best Japanese movie I've seen in years. A shame that when I went to see it a bunch of idiots thought it was ok to talk through it just because it was subbed.
>>155898390
No that's literally the only reason.
I never said I didn't like the film either, I just think it's not a masterpiece, and neither is Shinkai's directing ability.

Not that guy and going to be honest, but I had no idea I was walking into a disaster movie in my first viewing. The connecting only happened afterwords, so it's fair to say the bodyswitch, Shinkai-brand animation and romance are the hook factors to the film for first-goers.

>>155897591
Because the way the hand writing scene just suddenly ended was so amazingly awkward that it was almost relatable, I guess? I mean, if any of us were in that situation in real life, that is probably exactly how it would have ended, instead of actually finishing writing our names.
>>155898604
>was so amazingly awkward
It was really unintentionally funny.
>>155898578
He literally didn't. You're making a simple comment appear to be more grandiose than it was.
>>155898646
Yeah he did though, he's saying the reason the film is so popular in Japan is because it makes this profound commentary on the 2011 earthquake.
Which it doesn't.
So I watched for the 3rd time last night. I'm surprised how much I enjoy rewatching this. Something about the structure of the constant back and forth between Taki and Mitsuha keeps it interesting.
Two Things I noticed:
1) In the OP (for lack of a better term) When they are standing back to back, Mitsuha has long hair and is the same height as Taki, and in the next moment she has Short Hair and Taki has grown taller (looks to be about 3 years older)
2) When Mitsuha!Mitsuha is grabbing rice for breakfast, Grandma stares at her, which is the first indication that she notices something going on with Mitsuha. This also confused me the first time I saw it because the earlier scene is Taki!Mitsuha, and it wasn't clear that a day went by.
Any other interesting things people noticed after multiple viewings?

>A lot of the younger generation has so much information at their fingertips, they're always doing something with the smartphone in hand, checking twitter, social media, searching for something on their cellphone. I wanted to create a movie that didn't give them the chance to do that. So that's why I packed a lot of information in a short amount of time that wouldn't even allow them to pull their cellphone out and try to chat with their friends or whatever it is that kids do on their phone these days. So I think that eliminating that element of multitasking and making sure that the younger generation stays fully engaged with the movie throughout the duration was a result of that tempo that you saw.
He's pretty cool.
W-would a-any anons go see it in theater with me tomorrow night?
>>155898736
What else could he mean by "more" though? Really?
>>155898761
The storytelling really does fly by the seat of your pants, I enjoy that this was a functional requirement of him wanting to make a movie that would keep the attention of a hyperactive distracted audience. It worked.

Before i noticed that I assumed she just wandered around trying to find him.
Also Mitsuha is too sweet.
>>155898924
Did she just never look at the date? Also seeing a younger version of the person you swapped with might be a hint too.
>>155898924
I could be wrong, but doesn't she also go to the staircase that they meet at in the very end of the film?
>>155898970
yeah, maybe taki hit puberty very early and has a baby face, but there is usually a world difference between a 14 and 17.
>>155897823
I get where that anon is coming from, there are plenty of reasons to watch a film again that don't require plot-blindness. I've watched The Disappearance every December since it came out. At this point I'm not learning anything new, but it's just a beautifully animated film, and it's an enjoyable way to spend an otherwise chaotic season.
This is another film where rewatching it doesn't really diminish the charm for me; the very first scene of Mitsuha (Taki) slowly waking up just feels all too familiar, the way she's curled up, the bedhead, being ejected from a dream by her alarm clock. It's a scene that I've lived through, the connection is palpable. Then you have things like the lighting in this film which is just otherworldly. The timing of the score was so bloody perfect that I imported the CD immediately after finishing the screener rip for the first time.
Is it healthy to rewatch such a predictable film? Probably not, but why should I deny myself something I've enjoyed so much?
>>155899021
yes, and she pretty much foreshadows the ending.

How was the whole "you were the one inside me" translated in the dub? I can imagine it would provoke quite a bit of immature giggling for an American audience, which really isn't what that scene is supposed to go for.
>>155899244
Oh fuck, how did I never noticed this
>>155899292
Even worse, if I remember right. "You were the one who was in me." It didn't produce much laughing other than maybe a few small huffs, but I think I just end up getting good audiences every time I go to see this.
I thought the part where they were adapting to the body swapping was good.
How Taki built a bench and table by the coffee vending machine so Mitsu's friends could have a cafe or the fact that he caused one of the girls who was originally gossiping about Mitsu to confess to her.
You could really make a whole seires about these misadventures. [spoilers]And I'd watch it[/spoiler]

Serious question: To those who have seen both subbed and dubbed versions, is the dub worth watching?
I watched it for the first time subbed a few days ago, and although I prefer subs when I watch anime, I'm open to giving theatrical dubs a chance.
>>155900211

>>155900212
for an english dub, they did a good job, but it's still a dub, so it depends on how tolerant you are
>>155899412
They would've disappeared. If you notice, the line on Taki's hand vanishes during the scene where he repeats her name, and he goes to rewrite it - only to be able to remember the first line, that she'd put on there before.
That's because they both left their most precious thing - each other's names - in the underworld, just like the grandmother said.
Taki's writing "I love you" gets around this loophole because he's not actually writing his name, so it doesn't disappear, which allows him to get his message across to Mitsuha. Whether he did this consciously or it just happened to work out that way, I'm not sure on.
>>155900211
I'm gonna try and get up to 6 or 7. Taki cosplay is well in progress, and I'm gonna wear that thing to as many showings as I can.

The dub is worth watching if you've already seen the sub or if it's the only thing available in your area.
There are a few scenes where the dub actually helped me get a feel for the atmosphere better than the sub, the one I remember in particular being the scene at the festival where Mitsuha and Tessie are trying to evacuate everyone. I think hearing it in my own language helped the feeling of desperation and the fact that nobody was listening to just a couple of kids hit a lot harder than hearing it in Japanese.
Obviously there're a few problems, mainly that in the beginning dialogue sounds a bit too formal and stilted, that Yotsuha says "boobies" to match the lip flaps of "oppai" which doesn't really work since nobody, even middle schoolers, calls them "boobies," and the whole "kataware-doki" thing is awkwardly translated. The latter they probably couldn't do much about since it's a cultural thing, but the first two they could've.
Still, I recommend seeing it. It's not bad, and it did help in a few places. I'm just nitpicky about those three points.

In the theater? No. Including the screener and rips? I've seen it dozens of times. One thing that's really left an impact on me is scenes where Taki clearly overestimates Mitsuha's strength; e.g: when he tries to carry the grandmother, or when he pulls himself up a ledge after falling off the bike.
>>155900212
The dub itself is slightly above average, but it's not great. Sadly though the soundtrack, to me, got the short end of the stick. (I can certainly appreciate the vocalist of RADWIMPS being trilingual, but the English lyrics just don't fit.)

I've seen both and what the others said is pretty spot on. I would say the soundtrack suffers a bit being in English but it's solid otherwise. The parts where they have to translate specific japanese things didin't work to well. The worst was the translation for the watashi-watakushi joke which does not work in english. But other than that it was fine.

>>155899628
Interesting, though that's not how I interpreted that symbolism.
>In exchange for returning to this world, you must leave behind what is most important to you.
For Mitsuha that's half of herself, the kuchikamisake. (Which is the entire point of her family's ritual.) For Taki, however, he gave up the knowledge ofMitsuha's nameas penance for returning to his world after katawaredoki.
>>155900561

its not subbed in either version.
>>155900818
was there any audio? i thought it was silent
>>155900729
When I was watching it, I was thinking of multiple ways they could've fixed Yotsuha's lines so that it was just "boobs" or "breasts." The only problem where they have "oppai" alone is where Mitsuha exclaims in surprise after Yotsuha says somethign like "Oh hey, you're not touching your oppai this morning." That instance, however, could easily be replaced by "my boobs/breasts?" if they'd wanted to.
>>155900752
They both end up forgetting though and Mitsuha forgets because she leaves the Underworld the second time in Taki's body so she has to pay a second time.
>>155900752
In that sense, you can also say he feels guilty leaving Mitsuha's kuchikamisake in there when she didn't enter the underworld herself. This was probably what angered the gods to stop the bodyswitching, yet the sake was still there to give him a chance to redeem his misdeed, but also at the cost of crossing there again and giving up a precious thing this time, which was Mitsuha's name.
>>155900743
Going into Canada it was a woman. She asked what I was doing, I said seeing a movie. She asked what movie, and I said, "a Japanese one. Limited screenings." Then she asked why I didn't have work on a Friday, and I said because I took the day off." (since I wanted to see the first showing). And that was it.
Coming back the US guy asked what I was doing, and I said seeing a Japanese movie. He asked, "Alone?" and I said, "I would have brought a date if I could find one." Then he asked, "So you're a big movie buff, huh?" and I said "Sort of," and that was it.

>>155902406
thanks,
the music is really magical
Musubi = Deus ex Machina
Mitsuha and Taki were pretty much on different dimensions...
Phones were the primary way they communicated with each other.
They both helped each other complete their goals through those phones...
Ended up falling in love with each other...
Perhaps... Maybe... But is there a slight chance that Shinkai plagiarized us?

Very nice anon.
So what was everyone's favorite track if you have one? I was at a tie between Nandemonaiya and Sparkle but Sparkle won me. The scene with Mitsuha running into town was one of the most powerful scenes I've watched in a long time.

Here in Canuckland, we had to sit our asses through mundane event trailers, with shit like TEDtalks, theater plays, Raphael and Michelangelo museum movies, and this other crap that just makes me go "when the fuck is this movie going to start already?"
>>155897883
I noticed the ruins of itomori had a post-tsunami vibe to them.
>>155903206
Sounds better than havinng to sit through 25 minutes of previews that were at least 50% Nintendo Switch commercials.
>>155903242
>>155903259
This. What the fuck were they thinking.
>>155903158
Of the vocal tracks, Yumetourou is easily the top for me. I think it's a shame it didn't get a full ~4-5 minute version.
After that, it's probably Sparkle, then Zenzenzense.
Nandemonaiya is a bit slow for me, and I admit I didn't sit through the credits so I don't really associate it with anything in paritcular. But Mitsuha's version is good.
>>155903206
My previews were entirely Israeli films and documentaries. Guess that's what the theater I went to usually offers.
>>155903206
I make it a rule to either use the bathroom or get snacks during commercials. The chance of me missing a trailer of a film I would be interested in is about 1/20.

When I read that a couple of hours I thought I understood what you meant, at least on the surface. But I'm skimming through some scenes and Mitsuha's line about why she's going to Tokyo,"A Date." "Not my Date.". I was confused by that line, but I actually understand. I had those Eureka/I'm dumb moments.
It's also not her date,by 3 years.
I think it makes her going to Tokyo and not understanding why Taki doesn't recognize her, and then accepting, all the more tragic.

I was wondering, for those who've watched it dubbed, how do they handle the scene where Mitsuha (in Taki's body) mixes up "watashi", "boku", and "ore"?
>>155905485
Anon if you intentionally kick over a desk in class in a very obvious way, people are going to notice. It sent a signal.
>>155905490
Good point.
So right after Tessie tells Mitsuha to go convince her Father to help evacuate the town, there's a second explosion off in the distance. What's that supposed to be, why did it happen? I'm not sure about the geography, but I thought the substation was on a different side of the lake? Is that just more explosions at the substation?

I wouldn't call it depressing, per se. Certainly not compared to Shinkai's previous works. It makes you feel, but I wouldn't necessarily call the end feeling depressing given what the ending actually is.
If I were to put it in a single phrase, I'd call it a sense of wistfulness.

>>155906147
Why would they?
He's the stern mayor of the town who has no time for such petty things. Word would get around that they tattled anyway and it'd probably hurt their reputation to have gone running off to the mayor.
That aside, Mitsuha's father isn't even her guardian or caretaker so it's not like he can give her a stern talking to when she gets home every night. He can only do it in passing unless it gets *really* bad and requires direct intervention, and kicking over a desk doesn't really fall in that territory.

>But now we're praising a film that trivializes their deaths for the sake of fantasy.
Don't make it sound like we are unique in praising it. Japan loves the movie. People I know who had to move away from their hometowns due to the Fukushima disaster love the movie.
If they don't have a problem with it then we have nothing to complain about.
>>155907563
People are yearning more for the concept of Mitsuha and being connected by fate to someone far away rather than the character herself.
>Why does the scenery of a town that no longer exists wring my heart so?
>nandemonaiya playing in the background
Even though this is my fourth/fifth time watching this movie, this line was so powerful that I'm still at a loss for words on how to describe the emotions I felt during this part of the movie. You could really feel how there was an emptiness inside Taki throughout all those years of searching which makes the ending even more sweet and satisfying to see especially since Mitsuha felt the same way. 1) I noticed that when running to convince her father, Mitsuha's breasts bounce a lot more.
And I realized that Taki was the one in charge in the morning so it's the same thing that happened with the basketball game.
2) Mitsuha starts wearing a bra when going to sleep after she learns from Yotsuha about the breast groping in the morning.
3) When Taki goes to the "underworld", the stream becomes wide and deep. It bears resemblance to the River Styx or the Sanzu River.
