Nah, it was their Skill attack. Story-wise, it was meant to be the extra power they get from the protagonist's talisman, like how Toki's singing boosted by it could heal other Friends, something that's used as a plot point in the game's 2nd chapter.

Generally, when the animal was associated with legends, the skill was tied to those legends, so the foxes get to become completely human for their Skill attack due to legends about Foxes taking human forms.
