While it wasn't as bad as I was expecting, it still wasn't by any means good. I honestly don't care that they used a white actress, but it fell so flat on its face when it came to the plot compared to the original film and manga that I doubt that the honestly great visuals could make up for it. They raped the entire mood of the story. Even in the manga, they went into more depth about the philosophical interpretations of the setting, but in the movie, Kusanagi was just your everyday fucking action hero, even after discovering the truth about herself. I realize that they took some creative initiative when it came to producing the movie. I might even consider that one of the best choices they made in directing this movie, (Oshii did it with the 1995 film) but the execution was so god awful that they butchered the original.

Most Chinese CG is shitty. Notable exceptions I've found are Sword Master, which while not having hollywood accurate cgi, compensates by using the CG to create colorful environments and a fantasy atmosphere. The Mermaid, which was China's best selling film in 2016, is legitimately really fucking good and the tone and atmosphere reminded me a lot of Dragonball, same director as KungFu Hustle as well. Finally The Monkey King 2 was probably Chinas highest budget film in terms of CG last year, and has a sick fight with a gigantic CG skeleton.

On the plus side, it doesn't involve people standing around and randomly spouting philosophy at times.

On the minus side, it has no subtlety. Expect the lead bad guy to show up and basically call themselves out as the bad guy within the first ten minutes. Also, I'm fine with them changing things in a revision, but so much was changed that it doesn't really have the same theme anymore. The live action movie is no longer cyberpunk, and instead a typical American action flick where they shoot the bad guy, good guy comes out okay, and even a short romance subplot.

I loved it. Read all the negative shit people here says about it and then I saw a movie FULL of references to the various timelines in the franchise. From the original to SAC to Arise.
Of course it's americanized and the movie is not about philosophy. In my language for example every time the japanese said the word Ghost it was just translated as Soul and not given the specific context in which is used in the franchise.
It has a little of everything. A much better adaptation of an anime work than I thought possible for Hollywood.

I just watch the kenshin movies and yeah its 10/10 movie adaption but as movie series I don't think it would be more then a 7/10 for someone who knew nothing of the series. Most of my family likes chinese martial arts movies and while kenshin can holds its own well its not the most brutal Bruce Lee or Let style of pure action .

The live action movie? It is not about living in a society dominated by morally questionable companies. It is not people who need to take cynical actions to survive. It is not about what lines to draw as a way to define who you are.

The live action movie is about some evil corporate asshole, who did a bunch of bad stuff, and at the end all the heroes of the movie band together and end up killing them. Hell, the most cyberpunk-y element (the doctor) ended up "redeeming" herself and got shot to show how bad the badguy was.

You even had the entire Section 9 going rogue and acting like one of the movie's Fast & the Furious trailers shown before the movie.

And don't try saying "but it had computers and brains and stuff" because those are just setting aesthetics. That doesn't define what cyberpunk is.
