It was on it's last ropes before that anyway. The game was so drowned in powercreep it only kept a small tightly wound group of neckbeards as a playerbase who felt too attached to it after spending so much money and time.

I have first hand experience trying to get people into playing Yugioh over the course of years (Mostly friends), and none of them stuck with it more than a month. Here are some of the reasons a lot of them didn't like Yugioh or stopped playing;

At the very least this show gave me Pre-Pre, Ritual Sanctuary, Saffira and Demolisher.

They loved GX, they didn't hate 5Ds, but they just didn't care about it, they loved Zexal. Yugi and Yusei put the game down once all the drama was over in favor of becoming a game developer and Scientist. I hope Yusaku is like that. Yeah, because Yugi and Yusei are the only ones that never actually cared directly about the game. To Yugi, Duel Monsters was always just another game, albeit one he had pretty strong spiritual ties to via Atem.

To Yusei, Duel Monsters was just a method of communication, and to a degree, venting his personal frustrations.

Judai literally went to school to become a better duelist, and ended up being a Duelhobo communicating with various Duel Spirits over time. Yuya spends most of his time before he gets involved with the plot (and a lot of time after) trying to entertain people and become a pro duelist. Yuma's the only one with weak ties to the game, since he basically was like Yusei in that regard.

Here's what I don't get. Why are the ratings for the show quite poor, from what I read? It doesn't even make it to the Top 10 most-watched anime per week. Isn't it a day-time show, and isn't Yu-Gi-Oh at least moderately popular over there?

Nah, you definitely don't need to pause the movie whatsoever. They speak slow enough that you get a basic understanding, if not a full effect of a card. Kaiba says Ore no Turn plenty of times too. Yugi of course sticks to Boku no Turn like he always has. Maybe you have trouble paying attention.
