You want to make a manga don't you? You have that idea, what is holding you back?

I'm already too entrenched in photoshop.
>>

Why is it best?
>>
>>153745074
Can't afford it and even if I could I'm more comfortable with pencil or ink on paper.
Nothing's holding me back. Just have to finish writing this plot.

Why should I switch to it over just using comicStudio? I assume it has better painting tools + animation tools, but comicstudio seems like it's pretty much as good as it gets as far as just linework tools.
>>
>>153745123
Easy to use, specialized to a greater degree to drawing than at least photoshop.

Using CSP for drawing and painting is like sex compared to PS. The drawing engine is much more efficient and faster, it has easy to use perspective guides and common fill patterns, watercolor brushes actually work like you'd imagine them and blending colors is easy and intuitive. The perspective guides alone make it worth it for me.
>>
>>153751711
Don't know if it's still the case but you can download and use it freely on their website account. You just can't load and save things.

The fact i'm not in japan or japanese and manga industry is extremely racist.
The fact westerners prefer colored comics making CSP strong point completely moot.
The fact getting into a western comic magazine is extremely hard due to how much of a circlejerk it is.
The fact it's more profitable to draw furry porn than to be serialized.

Not true, there's a handful of westerns that published manga.

>The fact westerners prefer colored comics making CSP strong point completely moot.

You can color in CSP or just do lineart in CSP and then color in photoshop. So this is a silly argument.

>The fact getting into a western comic magazine is extremely hard due to how much of a circlejerk it is.

No it's not, you're obvious getting all your ideas from /co/ because you don't know what the fuck your're talking about you baka.

If you live in Burgerland you could get it physically for $21.00 w/ free shipping for a while now

That being said, CSP is pretty snazzy with all the user-generated brushes. It runs fairly smoothly and the layout is fairly close to SAI so there isn't that steep of a learning curve.

SAI is still my go to drawing program though, if only because I can stick it on a flash drive and load it up where ever I want.

If you're going by " what Photoshop can't do" then not much. Photoshop can do pretty much everything CSP can but CSP is optimized for comic production and illustrations. The painting engine is way faster, perspective guides are easy to set up, speech bubbles and frame borders are easy to place, you can set up your project with pages instead of individual files, pen pressure profiles can be set for individual brushes, it has built-in stabilization, etc. Just many small things it does better than PS that add up to a better experience if you use it what it's meant for.

1. Learn Japanese
2. Get a job in Japan so you can actually hear how its spoken (one thing to learn it, another to learn how its actually used)
3. Make a penname
4. Never show your face
5. If need be, pay a nip friend to pretend to be you.
There you go. To anyone that doesn't know, you're a 100% pureblooded nip.

>>
>>153757215
I would argue that CSP provides a better in-program library of materials/textures/brushes that you can use just buy purchasing the program.

Arguably, you can just import your own brushes to Krita. However, I think it's useful to have unlimited access to a library of free to use brushes/materials that are created by other artists.

Krita's layout isn't as easy to grasp as CSP's is, but I have less issues getting my shitty monoprice tablet to work with Krita than I do CSP.

I use Paint Tool SAI for the sketching and painting + Photoshop for colour effects

SAI 2 Beta tool: https://www.systemax.jp/en/sai/devdept.html
CGPersia's license patcher

Latest version of photoshop. CC 2017 (The crack you want is by PainteR)

Literally painted in the basic brush because SAI has no good texture brushes.

Drawing mostly on tablets is fucking stupid.
Most of these good "artists" who can make good pictures using their tablet can't actually paint. I was trying to commission an actual painting a few months ago (I was offering a few thousand dollars) and the samples I got were laughable. It's hard to find a good real artist, art is pretty much a dichotomy now, "modern" artists which is garbage and people that are good on tablets but can't transfer their skills to physical mediums aside from pencil/pens and maybe charcoal.
>>

I disagree, once you can make better ones it gets really fun.

Not using it but that's really not cheating. It gives off very artificial lines which doesn't compare at all to what really high tier artists can do without it.

'Real art' costs a shitload of money to buy all the supplies. There is also a linear relationship between more expensive supplies and better results. If you use a shit brush it will look like shit, if you use shit paints it will look like shit, if you use shit canvas it will look like shit, if your easel is one slab of DIY'd wood it will look like shit, if you just reused that palette for the 50th time it will look like shit and if you are standing in a room with shit ass lighting it will also look like shit.

To make good digital art all you need are materials you can pirate and a top of the line digital tablet that only costs a fraction of the amount it would cost to buy paints. There's a reason why real art sells typically for several hundred thousand dollars and not a few thousand dollars. It also takes time to do shit like dry.
>>
>>153762160
They are both different disciplines that require different sets of skills. Asking a digital artist to paint something is like asking a sculptor to knit you a sweater.
>>
>>153762160
That's because it's something entirely different to learn. Like how you need to learn all the way to work digitally you need to learn how to work well on paper. In the end the "tricks" available digitally also have similar ones traditionnally, it's something to learn and get good at trough training (like how mangaka can do perfectly clean pages). I honestly don't feel like bothering doing that at all for now, maybe one day, but digital is just way more enjoyable.

Not really, all the traditional artist has to do is learn how the software they are using works.
The traditional artist will have a much easier time switching to digital than the digital artist switching to traditional mediums.
>>153762418
>It's also extremmely easy to totally fuck up your work.

>There's a reason why real art sells typically for several hundred thousand dollars and not a few thousand dollars. It also takes time to do shit like dry.
The actual good artists will always produce physical art, not digital. Thanks to internet, if you are a good classical painter you can easily make a at least 6 figures a year doing a few commissions/selling a few paintings a year.
>>
>>153762365
>In the end the "tricks" available digitally also have similar ones traditionnally
In my experience thats not true at all. When I went from paper to digital I pretty much had to regress to the level of a 5yo and re-learn everything I knew. Even basic shit like anatomy or color theory seemed to have completely disappeared from my head. I am still struggling to make something that is not shit.

Classical art is overrated honestly. Just yesterday I walked by someone's painting lying abandoned on the streets.

With digital you can draw anywhere with classical you are stuck indoors, stuck with dirty easels, brushes that have be washed, oils and paints that smell poisonous.

Not really your ability to pose/position characters, figure out where you need to shade and how to maximise colouration would stay with you.

>You're paying thousands for a drawing?
I gave up trying to find one. I found three actual classical artists but they wouldn't paint what I wanted, so I'm just saving that money and saving up to pay a sculptor I found to make two bronze statues.
I wanted a classical style of a female night elf from WoW, but I'm just gonna pay for two life size (6'5") bronze statues of them instead.
I tried finding a marble sculptor in the US online for weeks but the one I did find is on a few year wait list, so I'm just going with bronze.

The main thing kids have going for them is time. A kid who toys around with glorified scribbles for years is bound to improve. Their lack of standards helps. They barely care about what they draw. They just keep drawing and drawing and slowly improve passively. Someone who does that for 8 years can build a decent foundation for when they are old enough to actually focus on improving.
An adult can't do that anymore because they'd very quickly feel discouraged when the only thing they can do is shitty scribbles.

Luckily the advantage that adults have is that they can focus and learn from books. It takes years of trial and error for a kid to figure out how perspective works. A grown up can get a decent grasp in a few months with Norling and practise. It still takes a lot of time and dedication though.

Sculptors are really rare these days. For one, nobody will carve you a 6'5" statue of a meme race from a terrible game. I can sculpt but all I'm willing to do is busts, and the last bust I did was of my wife while I was on a lengthy vacation. I also have too much money to care for a commission.

A 6'5" statue, marble or bronze, will cost you a fortune. I'm pretty sure it's not uncommon for a bronze statue to cost $20k.

May as well learn to do it yourself at that rate, it could well enough pay for a few courses and the materials and tools needed.

Yes I know, I'm not an idiot. I have the money and am willing to pay. The guy I found is actually charging me $20k each. It's gonna be worth it though when I have 2 fine ass statues in my living room.

This seems like as good a place as any to ask. I've got an idea that's been bouncing around in my head for a manga-style comic series, and I'm a fair writer, but my drawing ability is extremely lacking. Is there a good way to link up with artists and the like? I don't even know where to begin looking.

40 grand isn't that much to me, especially considering these will last forever unless I explode a bomb or throw a grenade at them. I had some luck and was smart with my money and 2016 was a good year, I made over 150k just from the few days after Trump got elected so I can splurge on this.
>>
>>153775677
To be fair, they're pretty hot.

>>153775725
Don't comics / manga have different writers and artists a lot? How do they hook up?
Is it just submit a storyboard and have the artist get matched to you?
>>
>>153775725
>Is there a good way to link up with artists and the like?
No, you're staring down a gun with two barrels

1) Can't draw, will try to do it for free, fail, either disappear or start drama about how it was his idea all along, etc.
2) Can draw, will charge you a fee equivalent to two bronze night elf statues. 50% chance they too disappear and take your monies.

Slight hyperbole here but I think you get the point. Unless you yourself are a pro, you won't be getting any pro artists on your side. If they're not pro they're shit, if they're shit you're better off not bothering.
>>
>>153775725
I'm an okay artist and I've always wanted to draw a comic but I don't have the energy to write my own story right now.

Post your idea and a sample of your writing, maybe we can work something out (though I will warn you ahead of time that I don't have infinite free time, but I can set aside several hours per week)

It looks pretty obvious when the background is a filtered photo. That's only really a thing for modern/futuristic settings anyway. Considering the release rates of manga series I think that's a totally fair method if you can manage to make it looks good. Still won't compare to guys that masters hand drawn sceneries.

Bought it one year ago when it was on sale, barely used it even though I even bought a Intuos Draw so myabe I could motivate myself to drawing again

Didn't work as expected.

I actually dont give a shit about this, and you idiots are the one who ruined it for yourselves. Why the fuck would anyone want to put into detail when it can't even cover your living expense.

Remember that you dont have to be a Miura level artist, to make your own manga. There are a lot of manga out there, with bad artwork (FMA and AOT) and some that are drawn in a more stylized way (like Kaiji). As long as it is readable, the story is good and you keep making it, then everything will be fine.

Why does this have that "digital" look? Is it the lines?
Also the screentones look kinda odd imo especially in second(1st?) panel.

Nearly the same. Clip Studio took SAI and Manga Studio and combine them together. I used manga studio once, forgot which version and had issues using it for coloring and had to use SAI instead. Manga studio is still good if you just want to do comic or manga.

>>153756476
Nothing much to show, just a rough sketch drawn in CSP.
>>
>>153794207
Yeah, I've done it in Manga Studio, I tried to make it look more organic with rough brushes and all but there's just that much you can do. If I could I wish I would be able to emulate early Nihei.

Also yeah, digital screentones are weird because they just look so clean and you really gotta play with the eraser to make them less jarring (which I didn't get around)

Actually Nihei was the first name that came to mind when I saw your pages.
>>
>>153793591
Loving the aesthetic you have going on here.

I hope your actual story is as good as your art cause I'd definitely give this a read.

Work a bit more on the white/bright spots on the skull, they really stand out way too much against the screentone. Maybe a brighter dull screen tone for the bright spots? Just a hint of it and not pure white would really elevate the 3D dynamic look of the image.
