I think it's kind of the same appeal of the harem genre. That is to say, it's an easy form of wish fulfillment. Harem is basically assuring their audience that no matter how bland they are they can still be the center of attention for 3-6 random candy-haired anime girls. Likewise, these isekai stories assure the reader that no matter how bland and fucking boring they are, when their pathetic life ends they can be born into another world where they're the smartest, most powerful and sexiest guy around.

Really at this point the isekai model is so well trodden an author can mix it up just by doing something like NOT adding in the harem genre as well.

Maybe another reason this "wish fulfillment right off the bat" stuff has become so popular:
1. The overwhelming majority of new Jump series are cancelled within a few weeks. I assume this is the case with most major publications, correct me if I'm wrong.
2. Most new anime are 1-cour, and just by the numbers, the chance of any particular series getting another season is very slim.
So you have to skip to Act 5 right away if you want to grab people's attention, or you'll be dumped before you even get out of Act 1.

Indeed, you have, what I'd say three base premises - in regard to the origin of a 'protagonist' in a fantasy world:

1. Born upon the world, to any number of in world backgrounds for said settings, and lives in that world.
2. Born upon the fantasy world, etc etc etc, same as above, but, gets transported to another world, such as our mundane world.
3. Born on the mundane world to blah blah blah mundane background of some sort, and ends up on a fantasy/sci-fi/whatever world

And so on. These aren't the only variations, but most concepts can dwindle down to one of these three. Obviously you could add that a mundane fiction in our mundane world experienced by a mundane world born person is a forth type, as it's still technically fiction, but not fantasy/sci-fi/whatever but that's not really the point.

The appeal is actually going to be varied.

Why does your mundane, our, world born person get sent to the fantasy world? How do they react to it? What do they do there?

How you approach these subjects in the story can drastically effect who the given story is meant to appeal to. If they're happy to be there, if they hate being there, if they want to find their way back, if they want to stay, if they care about the new worlds problems, if they don't care, and many other variations all impact who the story is meant to appeal to and why.

That said, it is handwaved by the fact that the queen WANTS someone who has less power than her. If the MC created a whole industrial revolution, her power would wane compared to his.

That said, there's no reason he couldn't have done an artistic renaissance. Bring over a bunch of Shakespeare plays and novels, and have people enjoy those. I mean, they would take only a few gigabytes in a modern laptop.

I had this idea for an isekai story, where the conciousness of a man in the other world and in our world swaps places during the final battle with the great evil in the world.
This happens as a result of a miscast spell by the man in the other world, as he is one of a dozen mages trying to seal the demon.

The two MCs are:

They both just want to go back to their regular lives. One misses his girlfriend and family, the other misses his wife and children.

Slowly, they would start getting used to their new lives in their respective worlds, the regular man getting a job as a farmer's hand, or perhaps a city guard. Even though his body is capable of powerful magic, he himself has absolutely no knowledge of how to cast any spells.
The magician gets a job as a busboy at a restaurant so that he may eat. He becomes friends with the other people working at the restaurant.

Eventually, the regular guy in fantasy land is recognized by someone, and brought in front of the king.
In the same chapter the magician is also recognized - by "his" girlfriend.

The stories would mirror eachother in this way.

I have a feeling what you're mentioning is one of the major reasons why all these isekai- and harem-stories are so extremely similar in many ways. Publishers simply aren't willing to take any risks. If it isn't amazing going in, they will override any originality it had and make sure it fits the mold.
Doesn't help that 99% of the authors have never done any other writing in their lives before these stories, I suppose.

I thought about skill thief, but then I thought too much about how you can't chose what you take and it can be anything. So if the person had some illness or horrible memory then I would get that. Word Binder just seems like it can do what Born Leader and Good Friend can, but better overall.
