It's cute, it's charming, it's simple, the characters are lovable and the poor 3D animation is endearing. It is easy to enjoy and watch without thinking but there is also a post apocalyptic mystery beneath the surface. The simple narrative of everyone working together and using their strengths to achieve something and the way everyone are different friends with their own strengths is heartwarming. It has that "healing" quality to it. Come home from a long salaryman day at work, put something easy and cute on to watch that will give you a warm and fuzzy feeling and not make you think too hard. Kind of like how iyashikei genre works. Even the poor 3D works in its favour to make it feel kind of moe because there is clearly a lot of effort being made by the people working on it.

I think people are reading into it too much when thinking the entire world may be fucked. I mean sure, I guess that could be the case, but I'm not convinced so far.

Most of the Friends are pretty dumb, and even the smart ones have a very limited POV and knowledge base. The ending features abandoned amusement parks, so at the very least, a Jurassic Park/Lost World scenario is likely to have happened:

An island in more tropical latitudes near Japan was turned into a giant safari park, managed by the Sandstar. The tech goes haywire, maybe the Friends even reverted for a time causing a number of human deaths, etc. Island is abandoned and a No-Fly zone is instituted over it due to the Sandstar. Based on the general state of decay on the island, we're talking somewhere between 20-50 years later. Especially if some of the Friends remember humans.

Can't comment on Kaban-chan yet. Its entirely possible the Sandstar created her to "reintroduce" humans to the island, or maybe they were in a shipwreck and washed up onshore and got Sandstar'd.

Holy shit. Some people really deep theorise on this show.

Apparently the first episode follows the history of evolution of humanity.

-Kaban-chan starts off no more than a beast unaware of her abilities.
-Then it is shown that humans develop an advantage over other animals through endurance with the scene where Serval pants.
-Humans even though outpaced by their prey and possibly weaker in the wild could often run far longer so would kill animals by exhausting them with superior endurance.
-Then the ability to throw at a target/goal which gave humans advantage in hunting and so on is shown when they fight the Cerulean.

It goes on further to go into some stuff about being expelled from paradise, gilgamesh, humbaba and ancient Mesopotamia which I don't really follow.

Speculah aside, I did like how Serval pointed out that Kaban chan could endure long walks without tiring. That's essentially the theory that the original ecological niche of humans was "persistence hunting", or endurance running your prey to death. That's why humans are the best endurance runners under the sun.

Also quite crazy from the perspective of the animal being hunted. You get away from a hairless bipedal animal easily and you're sitting in the shade panting, and then you see him loping across the veld like it wasn't a thing. Repeat this process enough times and you simply don't have the energy to flee. Under the right conditions (Africa, where we evolved) humans are essentially terminators.
