Carol's plan was to challenge Tomo to a duel. She was straight forward in calling Tomo a rival. She went to Misuzu for advice, Misuzu directs her to Jun

Carol assumes that Jun is the key to beating Tomo in the sense of him training her to become strong at fighting. She realizes that Misuzu's plot was to have Tomo be jealous over Carol being with Jun.

Basically Carol is chivalrous as fuck but not oblivious to manipulation

Let's talk about Jun.

As you can see here, not very fond of the idea of two close friends of opposite genders HAVING to fall in love. But I think he is rebelling so much against the notion of OBLIGATION that he's forgetting he actually does have GENUINE chemistry with Tomo.

Let's compare and contrast Misuzu and Jun, since their whole schtick is about friendship.

Jun does NOT want to LOSE his core friendship with Tomo - his fear stems from this idea that somehow a romance would change the ability to pal around with Tomo. I'm not buying it, but that's his fear.

Misuzu on the other hand seems to "accept" that more time with Tomo is the most she can aim for. But she views even wanting that much as selfish! The evil Misuzu, insidiously helping Tomo out so she can spend more time with her!

Both Jun and Misuzu are basically putting these sets of ridiculous assumptions onto themselves and raising Tomo up to an absurd pedestal.
