It always came off as the latter to me. Araki never went in depth with why drugs are bad and avoided putting them into Narancia's story because he wanted us to think about the real world. Drugs ARE bad, seeing junky street kids is one of the worst feelings. That scene with Buccelati and Giorno talking about the druggie kid with the fucked up arm felt very effective to me. Narancia having a drug problem would definitely drive the point home.

The kid at the start was merely a symbol, he wasn't a character dear to the reader. Narancia having drug issues in his past would probably work better as a twist, that would probably cause a shit storm. I don't know if it'd be off the limits, I imagine there are people that have much more knowledge about how that works and if there has been cases in other WSJ of main cast characters with drug problems in their lives.
Adults being brutally murdered and kids killing, specially if it's self defense, seems to completely okay tho, it's super common. Think about how Jotaro, a seventeen yo smoking got censored in the anime. I know manga is a lot less restrained but it's also a much more extreme situation.

In December 2010 I tried to read Phantom Blood but didn't get past the first few chapters. But I was still aware of Stands being a major part of Jojo. In July 2015 I watched the end of Part 3 and had a general idea from that that Jojo was about the Joestar family over the generations but still didn't know what Hamon was so when I started watching Phantom Blood in November 2015 I was confused about the lack of Stands but figured out rather quickly that they must show up at some other point in the future.

In a battle manga she doesn't really participate in many battles, nor does she have much potential in combat. Polnareff said that split personalities are the result of extreme trauma. Diavolo underwent some kind of trauma at a young age, where he had to become a hard-ass to survive and cope with it. The mob boss personality is there to protect the childlike personality from harm, but over the years the roles got reversed because SUTANDO PAWA and both identities having their own souls. So Doppio is basically a snapshot of what Diavolo was like before the trauma, like you said a memory of himself that he had to protect, but the memory has it's own soul and is it's own person. Eventually Diavolo overcame his trauma but in a very unhealthy way, and he no longer tries to protect his image of his old self after he burned down his hometown to destroy that image, and only uses it as a tool to further his own goals.

I don't think there really is an 'original' personality in this case, I always read it as Doppio being how Diavolo saw himself as a pure young boy and he became a massive cunt to try and protect this image of himself that he had, so while Diavolo was once like Doppio, Doppio isn't Diavolo and Diavolo as he is now isn't really the same person as he was before the trauma. Over time Doppio ends up being the one who protects Diavolo though.

Diavolo would have had to have been a naturally paranoid, aggressively-inclined boy, and in order to cope with being raped or otherwise abused he invented a sweeter, more vulnerable persona that he protected. That's the opposite of how MPD usually works, the newer personality is always meant to be one that protects the original, which shows in how Diavolo repeatedly comes to Doppio's rescue.

I guess an argument could be made for Doppio protecting Diavolo by giving him a disguise from which he could anonymously do his mob stuff, but even then I have my doubts since Dop is so often so incompetent and prone to upsetting Diavolo with the trouble he gets into.

I actually was part of that discussion and I was arguing that Jotaro was not the first character to wear a gakuran as a uniform or a torn-up cap (besides your example I also posted pic related, which is the MC from Ai No Makoto, a manga that Araki loved when he was young). And he didn't really popularize the "delinquent young man" MC either, works such as Ashita no Joe, AKIRA and Osu Karate Bu came way before JoJo.
But I'd argue that Jotaro isn't really a typical delinquent, and that he instead helped to popularize the "stoic cowboy" character type in manga.
