All of rebuild is an instrumentality dream from EoE, and 3.0+1.0 continues from Kimochi Warui as Asuka and Shinji explore the hellscape and live and learn to healthily express their love.

We see the graves and light is shed on how long Shinji had to wait for Asuka. It is eventually explained in the climax why Shinji choked her.

They have to eat cooked Rei-flesh and mysterous new lifeforms that have appeared out of the LCL.

Angel's Egg style direction and tone, but a bit more accessible with some nice interaction between them. They walk through the broken city and visit places from the show, constantly talking about their feelings and whatnot but hesitant to mention the worst that they found out about eachother until later.

Ends in true understanding of eachother as they talk around the fire, letting their guard down more. They eventually kiss for real this time and in the middle of the 60 second long kiss we hear the ocean waves pound and a baby cry.

They look at eachother like two people truly in love and then run over to it.

Asuka picks it up like a mother and brushes off the sand on its face.

As Asuka begins caring for it as a mother would, it stops crying, we see what looks to be Mari in baby form.
