I don't know. With a het relationship it's difficult to do the "my dream is to be an equal competitor to by idol" angle because women and men compete in different series. Also the fact that they're both men adds a twinge of surprise to their relationship indeed turning romantic; het romances are assumed and expected to the point where people claim men and women can't even really, truly be friends because the sexual tension and romance angle is always there. But with two men, the assumption is that they'll be friends and it turning romantic can still feel surprising. With a story about a man looking up to their idol and ending up training with them, it's could go any way and romance is the more unexpected course, but with a woman looking up to their male idol and ending up in close contact it'll be more surprising if they end up friendly and close but not romantic.

It'd be a different dynamic that'd have to be written differently.

This show became popular not because it's gay, but because the author is Kubo.
