AUs like that are the kind of fics uncreative people write. Why bother coming up with a story if you can just use the same story but with a different profession?

Often a fandom will have a few fics that are almost entirely the same because of this. A few soulmate fics for example will play out exactly like someone else's did. A lot of the 'soulmates have the first thing they say to each other fics' all have the commemaritve photo comment. Those with 'Soulmarks' will almsot always have Victor seeing Yuuri's mark because Yuuri strips at the gala (which of course he won't remember).

It's confusing at first. You're on the right track about this one - 飲 (drink) and 飴 (candy) have the same radical on the left side, it's the one used for food/eating (食). It may look different depending on the font but it's the same one.
Many parts won't mean anything and are only used in the kanji because of the sound, other parts won't make sense now but they did centuries ago. Radicals may look different when they're written on their own, too. The radical used for things related to meat/body, for example. 腕 (arm) and 胸 (chest) both have it on the left side, it may look like 月 at first but it's actually 肉. Water (水) becomes three strokes on the side in radical form, e.g. 海 (sea), 涙 (tears), 泳 (swim).
