A lot of the time, people will pay for stock photos so they can trace them/heavily reference them and not get their pants sued off. YoI has credits to stock photo publishers in the ED sequence for this reason. The owner of the picture is paid so that the studio/artist can use it. And there are stock photos for everything- even pole dancing.

I do take issue with them not paying to use the reference for Victor's initial apartment layout or the stripper's move. Lucky for them she was flattered instead of pissed, and we can see how they dealt with the room issue. But by and large the show has been good about crediting what references they use.

Honestly I think it's due to the ability of thousands upon thousands of people with free time now having the tools to scour for clues and look for these mistakes that we see them so often. Theft/inspiration/what-have-you has always been a thing in the art world. It's just easier to see where people get those references from now.

I take it you have never worked as a designer or illustrator. Even in illustration courses they teach you how to trace to your advantage. We are talking of an industry you need to deliver in 8 hours.
