Going to be honest. Zestiria's cast is decent but probably my least favorite Tales cast in terms of chemistry. Their skits are repetitive and corny, and not really funny. Individually, they bring nothing to the table because they never develop. Their biggest strong point is simply their designs.

I expected the anime to atleast make the cast feel more like a found family than the game did, but by hyperfocusing on only one or two characters and ditching the others, they manage to make them seem even flatter than before. It's baffling how you just can't fix Zestiria without a major overhaul.

You can, but you just have to not be an idiot about it. Instead of focusing on the two irrelevant characters, they should focus on the main character, Sorey, since is also the heart of the party, and it is HIS journey and he has the most interactions with the other characters, you're actually killing about 3x birds with one stone just by keeping the spotlight on him. Afterwards is Lailah and Mikleo who play a big part in Sorey's journey and also have their own arcs that they need to overcome that are related to the story, and whom it's actually important for the viewers to care for. Then after that is Zaveid whose a mysterious yet knowledgeable figure, then everybody else. The problem with the anime is that it fails basic writing in that it didn't even differentiate side characters from main characters and treated them acvordingly.

So far i like what they're doing with this set up
They are trying to figure out what is malevolence and what counts as malevolence
In the game Sorey turned a blind eye to Rose and her assassinating people, imo that's seems like a malevolent action to just let someone else be murdered even if the murderer thinks its for the better
it also seemed out of place for Sorey with his goody goody personality so hopefully this gets brought up in the anime
I like how they are giving a bit more character to the side characters even if only a little but I don't like how they are still not giving character to the main characters
I know what Alisha and Rose alike, but that's only two out of the 8 or so main characters
I only wish for this season to improve all aspects of character development, the theme of the story, and the plot iself

Also 2nd op was lame and tame compared to the first one
I feel like the first season was more so a set up for whats to come in season 2
they should've swapped the openings and used the more pumped up one for the 2nd season

So far I think the weakest thing the anime has had is its lack fo focus on Sorey, to the point he doesn't even really feel like the MC. And while I do like them fleshing out side characters more I also hope they actually get into Sorey's story soon. Last season moved too slowly and I honestly don't think they can finish in this season at that same rate.

Though my biggest problem with Zestiria is Heldalf and I honestly don't think there's a way to fix him. He's just a completely boring villain.

The game needed more time on Sorey, Mikleo, and Lailah, because they're the key to everything, and through them the game could have space to develop everything that needed development.

The manga did that but alas or was much too short, it was meant to be an adaptation not a complete retelling, so it ended once it ran out of things to adapt but honestly it needed to be longer. Do that it could have room to tell its story.
