And yes. There are categories but they have nothing to do with either the world nor the technological level.

There's high fantasy, low fantasy, dark fantasy (it's horror), fantasy of manners. Well there is one subcategory which does have something to do with the setting - urban fantasy - that generally takes place in post industrial revolution societies and more often than not on our world. But even then it's not set in stone you could have an urban fantasy in a world that has nothing to do with Earth and with a technological level that isn't easily comparable to ours. But it's rare because urban fantasy writers are fucking hacks.

Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, stuff like that, where the characters are larger-than-life Hero archetypes and literally saving the world from the Great Evil™. The movie released by CR was 4 parts at 20~24 min each. The first 4 episodes will just be the first movie.

There are two more movies coming out and according to MAL they are also Winter 2017 release (this could be false info[maybe?]). So expect episodes 5-8 to be the second movie in four parts and 9-12 being the last movie.

A very quick glance through shows me that this new first episode is just the same as part one of the movie, only with an ED included.

I actually really enjoyed the minimal exposition into the ensemble cast.

That kind of stuff (who's who and what's their back story) can be picked up through watching, and this first episode would've been a lot less gripping wasted away on a slow introduction to pretty generic looking characters.

The source material also feels fully realized (obviously, as a mobage adaptation) which helps a lot with the little visual things.

I knew most would probably see it as half baked, but I gotta say for someone new to the series, I really liked the way you're simply dropped into the story and things just go.

Urban fantasy is stuff like Fate/Stay Night or the not-Hogwarts parts of Harry Potter. Just modern day setting but with a world of magic lying beyond the mundane

Dark fantasy is generally just a writing style, can feature any setting but tends more towards horror or antiheroic elements. Classic examples would be Dracula or HP Lovecraft's works, the typical anime example being Berserk

Science fantasy is Star Wars.

Beyond those you basically just have realistic fantasy and other /lit/ stuff that

IT was surprisingly good, not only the animation was solid during all the episode, but it also "Shows instead of tell", that is something really outstanding for japanese media.

They trend way too much to explain you things, here instead of making an info dumb they show it to you. That is at least a good starting point.

Starting with the hero failing was also a nice touch.

The only thing I can complain is that it feels kind of souless? I mean, I feel like I've watched/played it like 100 times, it looks like a Fire Emblem opening movie, It's so incredibly generic when it comes to the setting and designs.

Of course there are, but only the ones more common that have clear common factors.

You have low fantasy, high fantasy, contemporary fantasy, space opera, dark fantasy...as well as other categories.

But then there is a shit ton of works that doesn't really fit into any of those since either it has elements from more than one, or not enough elements to qualify as one of those or bring elements from other genres, all those works with mixed elements are considered just "Fantasy" (without having a particular category).

For example, you have Lodoss War that is High Fantasy, or Claymore that is Dark Fantasy but then you have things like Mahouka that mixes elements so it is just "fantasy".

So this is based on a game? No wonder the first episode felt like a game intro/hype video even though it's supposed to be an epic battle. The type of video that's meant to showcase each of the heroes briefly. Hype video generally don't have coherent narratives but that's ok because they were only meant to let players know what kind of heroes they can pick from. I didn't play the game but I generally understood what's happening just from the first episode and am looking forward to the next. Just because they showed a lot of yet unnamed characters doesn't subtract anything if you just think that they're fighting a war and a war needs many commanders and soldiers from many groups. Game Plot Reasons. The game proper has things faring better for the MC in general, compared to the shit MC goes through in the anime.

In the game, there's this recurring main villain named the "Black Knight". He really hates MC and wants to do nasty shit to his Blue Waifu and Fairy Friend.

Towards the end, it's revealed that Black Knight -is- MC, albeit from another world line. In that line world line, MC fucked up really bad. They completely lost the war, all his Nakama are dead, and the Nigger virus completely overtook him. But because he ain't taking all that shit down, he mustered enough willpower and used his dead blue waifu's own Chain Chronicle to travel to a parallel world in order to fuck up that world's MC, steal the power of the blue waifu/fairy friend there and attempt to restore and fix his own world.

The way the anime is shaping itself up, it might actually be a prequel detailing the events of the other world line.

The first episode already opened up with the Final Showdown between MC and Nigger King. And unlike the game, MC fucking lost.

In the game, when MC got knocked out, he had this Persona-esque final boss Dream Sequence where the characters he met through the story gives him pep talk despite him already surrendering. They give him enough words of encouragement for him to awaken Nakama Power Overmax 100% mode and beat the final boss for good. This didn't happen for the anime captain.

I also find it strange that the Black Knight doesn't exist in the anime so far. MC's constant clashes with him in the story are part of the reason why he's so strong. In fact learning of the true nature of Black Knight is the reason why he gets more resolved than ever to fight. Getting his own copy of a Chain Chronicle probably helps too.

Nice first episode, I know there would probably be a tweest later on with the magic book but to see the hero party lose and getting to see the coming dark forces with resources getting scarce is a nice breathe of fresh air. That's kind of not true because you can have unique sets of armor for the main cast to help seperate them from generic mooks. As far as marketing you can literally sell the idea of a noble knight character or whatever while still also having the character be a pretty boy or whatever you want. There is an entire Genre of fiction dedicated to having masked characters go around solving problems (Tokusatsu specifically Sentai, Super Sentai, and whatever Kamen Rider falls under).

If this were a movie I would not have a problem since I already know if Hollywood shells out money to get Tom Cruise to do something they won't cover his face. But this is an animated setting. Put your people in situation appropriate garb, and just make sure to write enough time for them to be unmasked so you can rely on their looks to keep them humanized.

Depend on screentime, in kids show the hero would be shown with their armor on more than half the time, so their humanoid self is very forgotable. Though it's more depend on the medium/genre itself.

I would argue that characters designed with armor did take off. But the form has always been using an impractical or incomplete set of armor. Which brings me back to the start of this discussion about why they should wear helmets to compliment their suits of armor.

In this episode alone the Holy Princess has a breastplate and greaves, The japanese oni guy is wearing a partial samurai armor. Pretty much everyone wearing armor who isn't a CG mook is only wearing a few pieces or armor. Just enough to give them a distinct silhouette.

Which I feel is a shame because having a full set of armor and going into battle would look far cooler than having people just run around with 5/8 of a full suit.

How can one feel 'lost' watching the episode? Everything is literally generic fantasy stuff. Knights, Black King, Hero's Party, fairy. Yeah it's a bit strange for a first episode, but it's also the first episode, maybe it's intentional? Yeah? Ever thought about that?

The game starts with MC and his perverted pixie friend Pirika encountering Phoena (The bearer of the Chain Chronicle and best girl) and saving her from the black army while on his way to the Vice Capital. There he starts recruiting members for the Volunteer Army (Pretty much whoever you pull from the gacha, and each city has it's own gacha pool).

They go on an adventure around the continent to every known land and gain the support of every known nation around to mount one grand assault against the Blackened Capital.

Fast forward to the final battle,

The game itself isn't too bad as it is now, but there is a reason why Chain Chronicle Global failed. In fact it's the very mobage that FGO is loosely based off of in terms of mechanics. You can blame FGO's gacha being dogshit on Chain Chronicle since they based the gacha on CC's version 1 gacha, which was absolutely terrible, on top of not even having the Ring Character system that let F2P get good SSRs. It wasn't until a later update that Sega actually raised the rates on their gacha to be good (7% chance of pulling an SSR). FGO doesn't need to fix their rates because nips will whale hard for the Fate series.

Prior to getting the update with better rates Chain Chronicle JP and KR survived off of collabs (i.e. Log Horizon, Mabinogi). Global on the other hand didn't get the update for over a year, and was gradually killed off by Gumi's horrible way of handling the game. By the time it did get the Version 2.0 update the game was dead.

Upon defeating black knight, the quest will reward you with special sword arcana that can only be equipped to Yuri and no one else.

In the game you choose his responses the same way the FGO protagonist does, basically VN style.

So you could choose to give boring normal responses or perverted/joke responses, which don't have an effect on the story outside of dialogue exchanged for that particular moment.

The only time when Yuri (The Hero) ever has dialogue that isn't of your own choice is during the final battle, and if I remember correctly it's actually because that's a flashback of the Black Knight when he failed to save his world.
