Most likely due to the rather insular nature of the Japanese. Since they were mostly influenced by America and Europe during their industrialization and beyond they tend to think of those regions first and foremost when they think "foreign".

It's a bit of a shame. That medieval them has gotten a bit over used. There's so few anime and manga that try to explore other areas such as Arabic, Latin America or African settings. It could honestly be rather interesting.

Okay, you're misunderstanding what I'm saying and that's my fault, I should choose my words more wisely.

There's a distinction between being a likable character and having appeal. The plot demands she become unlikeable because she ends up pissing off her friends.

But if we are to stick with her through the whole story, she still needs to have appeal, to us, who have more insight into her character and why she behaves as she does than the other characters. There are plenty of compelling fictional characters who are real assholes, but we enjoy watching them because they have appeal.

As I said, it's a fine balance. Her selfishness and lack of self awareness is grating for some people.
