Trunks is pretty powerful as a kid and was already a ssj at a young age with training with Gohan. It's that the Androids are stupidly powerful being way of kami piccolo. My only guess Trunks gotten strong, but lacks the resources to get strong fast like his main timeline counterpart which was the issue, but i guess they wanted to have an "gohan" related arc there was backlash back then when trunksfans complain trunks's should've achieved SSJ2 first. Neverless with the Training he did in the alernate timeline he was more than powerful enough to solo his 17, 18 and along with imperfect cell. I would say Trunks was nearing perfect cell level since he did fared alright against the cell jr. He just didn't know how to perfect ssj form like goku and gohan.

Daily reminder that because Goku can use kaio ken in Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan mode he has created a checkmate situation.

If he fights any enemies that are equal to his power level he can use Kaio Ken to instantly beat them. If the enemy is too strong he can't maintain kaio ken long enough to beat them. Every fight boils down to this now.

There is a reason why goku never did kaio ken as a supersaiyan in the original show. If he had fought cell and used Kaio Ken he would have beaten every villain in the show easily

The ability HIT has to "Improve rapidly" during a fight is a desperate attempt to write in a mechanic that keeps Kaio Ken from instantly winning. You know Kaio Ken is OP when they have to give characters the ability to quadruple their speed and powerlevel beyond their original max in 30 seconds from "Improvement alone" just to keep up with how broken that Kaio ken is.

There's just no saving any of the fights that will happen in this series. I just treat dragonball super as a completely different show that is not canon to the original show that happened in some alternate dbz universe made by somebody on deviant art.

I read through whole the manga recently and it seems as though most of the characters, especially Goku in the kid and teen days, insist that they aren't fighting at full power. Read Goku vs. Tien again, Goku says something along the lines of "I've been fighting in sport mode, but since you're trying to kill me, I'm going into combat mode", then proceeds to be way more competitive with Tien. It's like in Street Fighter how Akuma uses the "killing intent" martial art constantly, which is why he dominates.

Goku seems to always hold back, even against people like Frieza and Cell. It's a character flaw of his.

The difference is in DB/Z, people were explicitly shown to be taking it easy, whereas in DBS you are simply assuming people are holding back even when by their actions they don't seem to be, simply because it's the only way to explain why some characters aren't vaporized in seconds.
