It would be a shame if they do make a DM Super. The new protag and new story gimmick was always one of the best parts of this franchise.

I won't blame Konami execs - I just am saddened that this is the state of fiction these days. Everything is The Force Awakens.

What do you even do in a DM Super? Yugi Mutou defeating Kaiba? The movie did that. Maybe Yugi Mutou could defeat him explicitly but the movie was pretty clear...

And as of GX we know Yugi is the best, that Kaiba is number 2 and gets so butthurt he invents motorcycle duels so he can win, and that Joey is number 3.

The story is over. The characters have grown as much as they could. DSOD finished what little else there was to finish. GX told us what happened to Yugi, Joey, and Kaiba. DSOD wrapped up the Millenium Item subplot, arguably even streteched that subplot to a breaking point

With DM Super, you either rehash old shit or make a completely new villain and new story - and if you're gonna do that you might as well make a new series and protagonist - a cast that can grow and develop.

Otherwise you're fettered by fanservice and the burden of having a complete story behind you.

Yuma and Yuya are the closest things we will get to a "kid" protagonist in the anime series.

In most shonen anime/manga, "kid" protagonists will usually start out with one major flaw, like not being skilled or being immature, which gets improved as the story goes on.

For example Yuma started out with horrible dueling tactics, which is why Astral was with him to help him out with duels. He definitely gets better midway through the story, beating opponents by not relying or even going against Astral's advice.
Yuya starts out with average dueling skills, with the Pendulums being his only strong point. He later on acquires extra deck monsters to give him more variety in dueling.
It's hard to believe that the new series will have a similar type of protagonist to the recent protagonists.

Nostalgia encourages laziness and complancy - and in terms of sales Nostalgia WILL boost ratings, and it WILL boost sales. But the actual quality of writing and the urge to take risks will decline. It's disastrous long term, and it's no surprise that the Hollywood Reboot style is spreading to anime

I would really like it if they outsourced the story to some other writer who doesn't write the duels but just tells them who wins or loses and Konami fills in the blanks. Arc-V started off really close to be a real anime with an actual story.
