You're definitely right on both (of the latter) counts. There was probably/definitely influence from western cinema on NGE, but I doubt it was as direct as those examples. The telephone poles are totally coincidental (you could take any film with a cross and make the same comparison) and the hills don't look anything like the tree branches.

OP'S pic is just bait but Anno was inspired by a lot of western sci-fi and so Evangelion (and every other Gainax work) has quite a few direct references to western television. Off the top of my head, Gendo and Fuyutsuki had their designs influenced by some obscure 70s-80s sci-fi show.

I noticed that, but i'm still not sure if maybe they just have a common influence for directing those scenes the way they did.
It feels like that type of PTSD breakdown would have come from a war film, it doesn't feel like it would have originated from Dezaki, but who knows?

there are at least a few legal cases of musicians claiming a song is completely original but sound almost exactly like existing work.

you can of course take a dose of opium or LSD and just fuck shit up, put together some random noise or throw paint at a canvas and that is art by some definitions. but if you want to make something people will enjoy you have to work off their expectations they form from previous works.
that wacky modern art is lost to people who haven't learned the history behind the subject, and heavy metal probably does sound like random noise to someone who grew up on classical.
as much as people want to be special snowflakes art is largely an iteration from what came before it
