I thought it was pretty notable that Papika wanted to talk with Cocona. When she said "We need to talk." I said fuck out loud from surprise.

The important thing here is that Papika has things to say to Cocona. Things that were not said. And now Cocona is possessed. It's seems likely Papi will try to break through to her in the finale, possibly even with a "Because I love you!" since the show seems to have been building to that. I half expected it during their quarrel and it is one of the few things that could shock Cocona into a realization I think, and of course Papika would genuinely mean it.

Stuffed animals are a pretty common symbol of dead children, in all mediums. Like when someone finds a burned village/building and sees a scorched teddy bear in the rubble, its a much nicer way to do it than showing a corpse.

The way they are all around Cocona, and only she is sitting right up while they are tilted at odd unnatural angles invokes that they are scattered or lost in a way that she is not, which could be a lot of things but nothing good. Them surrounding her implied it was important to her, or weighed on her mind for some reason. The way they stretch into the horizon shows how great in number they are, possibly many more than what we see.

Also notable is that Cocona's possession was foreshadowed there as well, with her reflection exploded and taking over the screen as the shot pans down and away from Cocona. I think I mentioned that before but not sure.

That slow build up from subtlely disturbing but comfy beginning, lending itself nicely to character development, building up through to out and out action packed happening we have reached now is great. Then there are there is the art, the animation, the references, the creativity and the brilliant direction. Easily one of the best shows of the 2010s.

Maybe "giving reasons for X" was bad wording in my part. Referencing another show with a similar dynamic, in FLCL we are never really sure about what Haruko's deal is despite the stuff she projects to the outside, because the script never explores her, while Naota gets 90% of the runtime of the show dedicated to his inside world so we are always privy to what he thinks, how he deceives himself, why he reacts to things in such or such way, etc

Just like FLCL is mostly about Naota, FF has been mostly about Cocona. Her relationships with other characters mostly existed in order to highlight her own arc.

I disagree with the first part of this statement because she has shown clear development throughout the series, but I'd agree with the second part, for different reasons to yours.
Even if we were to accept that you're right about her character being both flat and obscured you can no longer claim that is true after this episode as we see multiple scenes and conversations from Papika's perspective which are clearly allowing us in to her headspace now that she has regained her memories.

Surely they'll have a Papika arc now, but the part of the show where she supposedly fell in love with Cocona was a part of the show where most of the efforts were allocated to making us buy Cocona falling in love with Papika instead, with very little to the inverse (only the ep2 thing).
