Subbed, with almost no exceptions.
Voice actors in America, especially for anime, are paid so piss-poorly that the only people who would stoop to doing them are pretty shitty at it.
Whereas Japan has a highly competitive industry with huge wages for those who climb to the top of it.
You have to have a ton of money and connections to actually get good voice work done, for example Disney, which is why Ghibli films are some of the rare exceptions where the dub is acceptable.

Normalfags generally want everything dubbed. Also since dubbed voice actors are not taken seriously like they are in japan, they offend don't have a lot of new blood which leads to them either being a labor of love or just washed up actors because the pay is shit.
>>
>>150097885
The 'subs are better than dubs meme' is one of the oldest and dumbest things about the entire anime fan culture in the west. Because subtitles have been done for so long by non-professionals, the expectations the community has are all totally unprofessional. Like, leaving honorifics and random untranslated words would literally never even been considered for a moment by any real translator, but it creates outrage anytime subs are released with actual standards like that. And it's like that top to bottom. So, western fans would rather read poorly, partially translated versions of shows they pirate, basically, than listen to professional voice actors read actually properly prepared scripts. It's completely insane, to be honest.

Because localizations are handled poorly and the production values are often not as good as the Japanese version.
Not to mention the dialogs and character interactions feel weird because they are made with Japanese mannerisms in mind.

Then again most /a/ users don't really think that far about dubbed anime and they just hate it because it's the cool thing to do.

>>
>>150119815
>leaving honorifics and random untranslated words would literally never even been considered for a moment by any real translator
Nobody in the business of localizing for western audiences perhaps, but since fansubs are done by and for fans, their viewers are expected to have a working knowledge of Japanese language and culture that a general audience might not. When I watch a sub, I want to read an accurate and direct translation of what is being said, rather than the translators idea of how the scene might go if it was written natively in English. If that means leaving honorifics or occasional untranslated words in some contexts, then that's what I want. Of course this has to be done in moderation so you don't get ridiculous translations like "just according to keikaku" but even in communities like this such translations are objects of ridicule.
>professional voice actors read actually properly prepared scripts
"d-list actors who can't get a real job but still need to pay the bills emotionlessly reading a script they were just handed" would be a more accurate way of describing the average anime dub.
>>
>>150119815
Fuck off. Yeah subs aren't perfect but most dubs just sound awful to anyone who isn't American and are completely unwatchable garbage.
Also there is absolutely nothing wrong with leaving honorifics in. They can't be translated without being distracting, clunky shit and leaving them out entirely causes problems when characters specifically refer to them in dialogue.
>>
Depends on the mood and if im eating

This is actually a legitimate way to learn a language and you would probably find that you actually know quite a bit more than you think, just from doing this through a few shows. If you are interested in Japanese media, why not actually learn the language? It takes maybe two or three months, at most, to have enough listening skills to watch these kind of shows, starting from nothing. For you, with your headstart, it might take a month. Why not give it a try?

Even if you get a proper translator, you run into several issues:

1. Most anime suck. Even ones that don't suck are often laden with cliche, clunky, awkward dialogue that there's no "good" way to translate.

2. Even if it's not shit, Japanese is structured differently, uses different colloquialisms/idioms/figures of speech and general manner of speaking. "Translating" it into English properly requires heavily rewriting every line to make it sound "right" when read in English. Often, they just don't bother doing this at all because it requires some writing talent and usually these are just cheaply-hired whoevers that know Japanese.

It's even rarer to get a well-written, natural-sounding translation that is then dubbed WELL. They're doing it on a budget, they're not hiring anyone known to be GOOD, come on. They're hiring failures or noobs because they don't have to pay them jack shit.

Occasionally, when you get lucky and some of the noobs turn out to be good actors that simply haven't been discovered yet, and/or the director whips the fails into giving a decent performance (I've seen good stage directors turn people who barely qualify as actors into giving decently good performances, it can be done), you'll get a good dub. Rarely is it paired with a real good translation though, and rarer still is the base material any good to begin with.

I mean look at Helsing Ultimate - great English cast, dialogue as translated well, but the dialogue itself was trash to begin with so it's a waste.

The times where it all clicks are virtually non-existent, sometimes being flukes, like Ghost Stories, which worked because they threw the script out completely and wrote their own. Off the top of my head I can only think of 3 shows that had actual effort put into dubbing it properly and thus making it good: Bebop (fucking DUH), Baccano (also duh) and Steins;Gate (people never agree with me on this but fuck you, I'll defend that one).

>>
Does anybody here actually knows Japanese enough to watch a raw AND understand most of the dialogues?
>>
>>150120986
1. I'm not decrying it, in theory. It would be the best way to translate anything - make it sound right in whatever language you're translating it to. In practice, however, the people that would actually DO that kind of thing are almost always complete ass at it. Thus, I assume by default any anime with heavily rewritten English scripts will suck.

2. Makise's English actress was probably the best match in the cast after the guy doing Daru, I will fite u m8.

I'm going to assume this is the same sole faggot that complains about it every once in a while, that somehow Funimation wormed their way into /a/ and convinced people into buying shitty anime as part of a huge marketing scheme that would take more labor than the return from their entire stock selling out. Never mind that it had a bunch of streams where everyone enjoyed shitposting about it, it's obviously in the same vein as Origin's marketing on /v/.

Is it your first day on /a/? When was dubs acceptable here?

The pasta made a big point out of Funimation dubbing it. And it had already been out for years when your "improvised stream watching" started.
