People get far too invested in their own expectations for a romantic conclusion to a non-romance series. Spouting "character X is straight/gay/(male)/trap/whatever" is basically just a response to that. It's an easy way to trigger people who become obsessed with relationships.

Shipping is cancer when it gets taken seriously like that. Its funny. I've been thinking a bit about the early episodes. For a brief time (like episode 1 and part of 2) I was kind of weirded out by Papika's clingyness to Cocona and just how much affection she seemed to have for her.

I still want a bit more explanation as to what Cocona is to Papika and why Papika chose Cocona specifically (I mean the shard embedded in her aside). But as we've gone on the more I think of how they came together and just how good Papika is for Cocona in terms of bringing her out of her shell/Helping her self esteem and just how fated they seem to be together like they're a perfect matched pair just makes me feel really warm and fuzzy inside.

I want to justify why Papika's attitude towards Cocona is not something shallow out of pragmatism of a job.

For Papika going into PI is probably most of her life, just like Rei Ayanami's purpose of life is to pilot Eva, so Papika doesn't really think of going to PI as a job instead more of her life. Now the plot says she also needs to find someone who is able to complement her in order to accomplish her life's purpose. This is like when you're young you're told there is someone in the world that is your true love. The rest of FF probably didn't think of a partner as anything other than job necessity but since Papika grew up with it she has her natural romanticization of it.

Before ep 1, Papika knew she had an OTP somewhere in the world but FF kept giving her arranged marriages to test. Finally in ep 1 she got fed up and ran away to find her true love. Then there is the scene when Papika flew over Cocona as arguably a classic love at first sight scene. By this interpretation now I can be comfortable with the feeling Papika has for Cocona.

That does make a lot of sense. Especially when you consider just who Papika is personality wise. She goes out, finds her OTP, and in her mind everything is set. She feels no reason to be nervous or uncomfortable around this person because they have given her her meaning in life. So why should she be nervous or uncertain about this person since they are literally meant to be together. So in Papika's eyes, right from the get go she realized that Cocona was her soul mate. It may seem kind of autistic on the outside but really on the inside it was just Papika knowing they were meant for each other. It's just taken until now for Cocona to catch up to this fact and start feeling the same way.

I've made this comparison in other threads but in a way a vibe I get from the two of them is the same one I got from Renton and Eureka in that their love was at least partially fueled by the necessity of them coming together to achieve a greater goal. In that situation all that's needed is a spark and the circumstances of their relationship and interaction (Uniting humanity with the Coral in E7 or doing whatever the fuck FlipFlap is trying to do here) force them into situations where they bond which would nurture any small romantic spark into a full blown relationship with time.

The shows took a lot of effort in showing Cocona's feeling towards Papika warming up. That needs reciprocation which means the backstories of how Papika came to become obsessed with Cocona.

The only worry is the show hasn't given us a lot of Papika's backstories as to why she justifiably has so much obsession with Cocona so I had to think really hard to come up with the comparison of Rei Ayanami to explain it.

The outro is a reference to Hansel and Gretel. Two kids (original boy and girl) go into the forest. There they find animals and berrys and yave fun the whole day long. As the night arrives they got lost and can't find the way out. They find the house of the old witch. She holds Hansel captive to eat him and orders Gretel to make a fire to cook him later. She pokes him(her - Papika) to test whether he is ready to be prepared. Hensel throws the witch into the fire and so the kids can escape. The swan at the end is not related, maybe another fairy tail.
