For her position in the story, Esdeath is character that started off with plenty of intrigue, but was revealed to be a shallow bitch. Her whole character arc and Darwinism, coupled with her attraction to Tatsumi is ridiculous. What positive traits she does have come off as cheap and haphazardly stapled on to add depth but it's probably faked anyways. She's really boring and stupid, and all of her tactics amounts to overwhelming others with her ridiculous power (and she doesn't even use it that interestingly either). Unlike Honest, she's not really played for laughs either. The only thing that was good about her was her design. I don't like Mez, but at least she got creative with her kills sometimes.

Of course, Mez has her own problems, like being a generic flat chested tsundere despite being a mass murderer. Also, her climax fight was too early on, and we never got the satisfaction of seeing her throw Justice's "I AM THE LAW" shit back in her face. Her background was extremely forgettable too.

Mez is weird because she has some deep connections to certain characters (she's the daughter of the guy who trained Kurome and Akame and gave them their swords), and some of Takahiro's design notes say she's easy going and actually dislikes killing people, so there's lots of hints of a much deeper character. They continuous are shown to hit it off and act like a couple. This reached a new level when Mine went to rescue Tatsumi from Esdeath.

The only character established to be good enough to kill Esdeath was Akame, and she had the weapon for it. Can't be fixed without a rewrite from scratch. Night Raid were generic and shitty characters. Combining edge with typical harem antics did not work. Combining edge with pretenses of moral ambiguity did not work. Combining the premise of an organization of assassins operating by stealth and subterfuge with anime power levels did not work (Night Raid ended pretty much defeating the entire Empire by themselves, with a lot of opponents, who were supposed to be preventing them from just walking in and killing the Emperor and the Prime Minister, jobbing in bullshit ways). Edgy villains doing edgy things were the sole distinguishing trait, and, I dare say, the main source of entertainment, but neartly all of them were killed too fast.

As much as I like this series he's got to be one of the worst characters of all time for not going through with it and using Esdeath's love for Night Raid's advantage.

So how would you rate this series now that it's basically over? I'd say it's a modest 5/10, could've been interesting but a lot of it felt like a draft which could have been expanded upon which never really went anywhere. Would've been more interesting had the focus been on the Yeagers over Night Raid since I found them to be a much more interesting group with a better dynamic.

AgK threads only reached insane post counts in the few thousands when it came to chapters involving Mine and Esdeath. Fans from two sides raging war on each other was the high point for AgK threads, not solely due to shitstorsm, but cause it promoted hyped, speculations, and actual discussions amidst the rain of fire.

That was a couple of years ago and after Esdeath got btfo for good after Mine saved Tatsumi and got comatose, threads and hype died down as a result of fans from both side losing interest. Difference though Mine was memorized with best memories of what she did. Esdeath, on the other hand, gotten worse since then. Now, she even got a lame ass death as if to add insult to injury.
