Also this shit does not LOOK like Ghost in the Shell, at all.

Look at every adaption of it before this. From the original '95 movie to Arise. They all have one thing in common. Masamune Shirow's designs. They are far more "refined" in the anime vs the manga versions but it's all there. Shirow has a certain way of designing mecha, vehicles , aircraft and especially guns. The anime versions draw on that and as such GITS has a very distinctive look and aesthetic to it.

This movie from what they've shown has none of that. The city looks generic fake futuristic city, where in shirow's work it looked very much had a more grounded look to it. In fact Children of Men actually nailed that look better than this movie manages to.

It's like they only looked at the anime versions and even then failed to capture the look of it. Again why can't this be something original? What's "Ghost in the shell" about it exactly?

Not even going to get into the whole "muh memories" bullshit they shoehorned into it.

The issue isn't 'whitewashing'. That was a foregone conclusion. The issue is that they didn't cast somebody better for the role. Live-action Major can't just be a pair of tits and a pretty face since your suspension of disbelief is a hell of a lot lower. She can still be hot, but she also has to look like she might actually know what a gun is or even how to fire it.

And you can do so in an adaptation, too. Look at RDJ as Tony Stark. He was a washed up crack head who Jon Favreau threw a bone, and not only was the film a success, it started the most profitable brand in film history, and made RDJ a global super star.
It all comes down to putting together a film that works on every level that it has to in order to draw in fans.
At best, this movie will be a forgettable success that does what it has to as an adaptation. Which might be okay, but you don't become Star Wars or the MCU by starting safe.
