Maria was about wars in general, it's clear in Izetta thats a much more nationalist/age portrait representation of the show that is poorly intertwined with the characters and their actions.

Maria failed to deliver even though it had some strong characters and philosophies to accomplish a happy ending. Izetta almost immediately throws it in the air as one dimensional beings following the historic happenings. If you have your historic happenings be presented this flimsy then you only have one dimensional characters to support the story. Hence why people are mad at Izetta plot development.

And it looks like this sort of criticism happened in the creation of the show since every episode had some sort of different tone trying to find its own narrative style. Personally I would love if this was presented as a mockumentary, it would have fitted the sort of humor the director is trying to insert it and its not well thought out characters.
