Monogatari is an LN about edgy teenagers trying to figure out who they are. The setting lends itself to those vacant, spare backgrounds (and how all background characters are only represented as abstractions). It's all about abstraction; hence a lot of stark white rooms and "cold' modernist architecture.

3gatsu meanwhile is a low-key story about a family with young children and a beta shogi player, with color scenes in the manga drawn in watercolor. It's a more down-to-earth setting calling for a more down-to-earth art style.
