You are being pretty dumb to be honest. Most anime studios don't pay a great deal towards making the shows they make. In the majority of cases they are rather being paid to make them by investors in the franchise who are hoping to sell things like books, manga and merchandise. As such the budget that places like White Fox would have for things like this would more than likely be segregated as I doubt investors in a show would be happy with money they have provided for the funding of an advertisement for their novel (re: zero) being used to fund something entirely different for example. Now obviously if studios manage to spend less on production than they were paid to make the anime and the anime is successful they may also get profit from the budget for one show and reinvest this into other projects such as originals. This is how GAINAX for example seems to have worked. If you look they used to follow a pattern of doing a couple of adaptations to raise funds and then invest it in a new original. I am not even sure that is the case with this show for Whitefox though, if you look at the companies involved the production company is Infinite and Whitefox are not listed in that regard at all meaning they have probably invested very little in it if nothing at all and are merely being paid to work on it and make the anime.

My expectations going in were way too high and I immediately dismissed it as utter shit, but after settling down a little and having some time to think about it, it wasn't all that bad desu. I think this is the first legitimately bad anime I've seen in recent times, usually 24 minutes anime at worst are boring and mediocre.
It feels very early 2000s.

I liked it, detective dad is pretty cool and the girls are cute. I'll give it the 3 episode rule, if it continues to be just light hearted silly mahou shoujo i'll watch it.

Main problem is the total lack of focus as far as telling a coherent story right now, but it at least introduced some alright characters. I would be more turned off by a bland unoriginal set up than a case where the pieces are there to build something alright, but just completely unorganized. Definitely a case of give it 3 episodes.

Seems to me like another Rolling Girls esque original clusterfuck. Likable characters with decent interaction but a poorly put together story that doesn't result in much.

What did people find confusing or unfocused about this episode? It was fairly standard shit, the structure was textbook mahou shoujo first episode and the tone was always campy or simply comedic. The show's distinguishing point seems like it'll be a focus on the father-daughter relationship, and though it's still hard to know exactly where they're going with this that's part of the fun.

At this point it's really hard to tell. I definitely get an early 2000s sloppy anime vibe from this show, but I'm still unable to tell whether it's intentional.

That's what I meant with distinguishing point, seems like the dad will get more focus than those characters usually do in these shows. Other than that it's a cliched structure, they showcase the enemies being dangerous and the main characters' normal lives, then have them find whatever will turn them into a mahou shoujo and throw an enemy at them. The only thing missing so far is a mascot, but it seems they're right there in the poster.

2000's mahou shoujo is still alive and well, Nanoha and Precure's formula is still a go to for most shows.

Anyway, Matoi feels more like one of the cheaper, often forgotten, mahou shoujo shows. And this has nothing to do with age, Chappy to Sally and all that.

I do like how each of the girls is kind of a different type of mahou shoujo though, Matoi seems to be more of your typical modern one, british girl is a more tech one like Nanoha, and then it looks like the Yuma becomes one too with a shrine maiden look.

Not at all, it's better than majority of the shit this season. It didn't do anything too special, but it was still enjoyable, had nice character interactions, and cute girls, which makes it way better than a lot of the stuff so far.

I'm a bit sad that it looks like this show will have pretty dead threads, although I don't completely blame people for avoiding it because of the subs. After episode 3 I hope we can at least have comfy threads with the few people who seem to have actually enjoyed it.
