As someone who enjoys a really cheesy love story, I was pleasantly surprised with this one. It was actually better than I expected. I could see this actually doing well with a Western release if it got dubbed. It doesn't have that typical Japanese type of ambiguity that Western audiences hate.

The 2 most influential animators of KyoAni are Kigami and Horiguchi.
One already left the industry and the other is probably retiring soon.

Kigami already has more than 2 decades of experience under his belt before joining KyoAni.
There won't be another animator as good as him at the studio.

It's funny how that music video at the ending spoils the whole story. It's like they didn't want to wait and see if the public would like the movie, they just assumed that the public would and stuffed it with all those music.
I liked the movie, really liked, the animation is beautiful but... It's a movie to watch and shill without drama and soul. The phenomenon doesn't have clear rules, things just happen conveniently, and equally don't happen for the same reason (it's so difficult to write things on paper?). Without doubt the best Shinkai by far, and I wonder how much responsibility Kenji Imura have in achieving this.
All theses discussions and comparisons with Koe no Katachi is dumb, they're both very different stories with very different styles and goals, both are good and will succeed in they own ways.
