I think it's more a cultural difference. After all, there a lot of people outside the US who get sick of its humor for its traits. Take Ghost Stories. A lot of people love it, and some hate it for its "Burger humor."

It doesn't make it any less funny, but it requires a certain degree of exposure. While it falls flat a lot for me, there are times where that dry, mundane explanations of what obviously just happened can add to the humor in a strange way.

I will agree that delivery is important but I don't think that subbing is really all that detrimental. You can laugh at interactions in a book, why not in a show. Rather than being limited the only difference between the two is that the show may use audio-visual cues in tandem with the written comedy which was already fine.
Another issue is a lot of nip jokes are related to word play and other nip specific things. If you can't here the words playing off each other then it's shit. If you copy it into an english word play then the joke is 100% different as the quality of the word play is in how it sounds and how the actors deliver it off each other.

Of the choices offered in the OP, probably Nichijou.

However, Azumanga Daioh is still the big winner for comedy, even after all these years. Tomo physically threatening to throw Chiyo off a cliff for absolutely no reason remains one of the high watermarks for anime.

Special mention for Yuru Yuri, which feels like a slightly toned down, sexed-up AzuDaioh from an alternate universe.

Compared with the slice of life stuff that came in the years following it, AzuDaioh is downright anarchic at times. Comparing AD to something like K-On feels almost like comparing Beavis and Butt-Head to King of the Hill (KOTH kicks the shit out of K-On any day, mind.) The only reason it really gets thrown into the SoL category is because the term is so broad.

Girls are certifiably hilarious. Actually, you could probably genderflip everyone and the show would be basically intact, but I get the feeling Osaka works much better as a female character for whatever reason.

Out of shows I've watched somewhat recently I found D-Frag to be absolutely hilarious. Shirobako, which I just finished, had some excellent comedy moments as well. My all time favorite comedy anime is definitely Arakawa Under the Bridge which delivers episode after episode. I love the complete absurdity of it. Like this skit (even though only a bit of it is on youtube it's a god tier episode from start to finish)

Seconding Teekyuu. It actually manages to do setups and punchlines in under 5 seconds sometimes, which is pretty impressive even if it leaves you with no time to understand what the fuck the joke was and three more jokes have come and gone while you were trying to figure it out.

Weird that Mitsudomoe hasn't been mentioned yet. Mostly juvenile (albeit funny) crap but occasionally capable of some great subversive comedy.

In any comedy you aren't going to get 100% of the jokes because of the wordplay/language barrier, but anime comedy in general translates pretty well. Especially visual, situational comedy shows like Nichijou or Nichibros. Some shows have more cultural references and puns that completely go over the heads of most western viewers who watch them.

I don't think anyone's saying that you shouldn't watch them, just that they're not made with you in mind. Most jokes in anime are easy to understand and correctly interpret even when you're not familiar with the Japanese as their depictions are mostly visual and typically aren't very complex.
The humor that isn't represented that way though (i.e puns) and other subtleties or references to Japanese culture will more than likely fly over your head.

If you get every reference to famous japanese comedians and their gags, every pun, every bit of wordplay, and every other cultural reference (as comedy manga can be highly referential), congratulations, you have thoroughly exposed yourself to Japanese culture over the years and can claim superiority over the rest of us. Comedy is like art. There are levels of interpretation and, admittedly sometimes those are wrong. By living in the same and sharing experience with the author you can understand more of their actual message but quite often the technical mastery of their craft will provide an enchanting experience for any one who looks at it. Even if they don't know that the field in the painting was once the site of a horrific battle the morose tones and fading sunset illicit similar feelings in us all.
So yeah, people can never get nip humour 100% unless they're in the same culture and sub-culture but if the humour is good and the person receptive they can appreciate at least 80% assuming the joke isn't niche as fuck.

Sabagebu is the funniest show in recent memory. Other than that, tie between the Nichi's. SnH was good but not better than these.

Carnival Phantasm is literally the most treasured anime of the Type Moon universe.

SnH is probably the funniest show ITT, though Teekyuu and Plastic Nee-San are definitely contenders. All around best, though? For me it's probably Nichijou, I just love everything about it. Helvetica Standard especially. The one with the gun at the end is one of my all time favorite anime scenes.
