1st season covers the "setting" chapters. Once you know who everybody is and what their relationships are like, then the gag manga engine turns on and it keeps going mostly on autopilot straight to the end.
The first episodes had the most drama to them. Things changed. People changed.

But Ranma IS a comedy series. So when it actually starts devoting to wild chases/fights around endless Macguffins, that's when it gets really fun.

The original premise sounds more like Ataru was conceived as a lightning rod for weird supernatural junk in general, a cute girl would always be part of it, hijinks, then Shinobu breaks up with him again at the end of every story. Like the chapter with the dehydrated kappa or Oyuki's introduction minus Lum. Ataru might have ended up technically engaged to 20 demons but Lum was first and an immediate hit.

1st and 2nd seasons are mostly manga adaptations. Starting halfway through the 3rd season almost everything is random episodic filler with a few manga stories here and there. Really, it's hard to understand how the show remained on air for so long like that. The filler wasn't even good most of the time,and the anime writers annoyingly seemed to love the status quo more than Rumiko Takahashi herself, which is crazy. The Hiryu Shotenha and Moko Takabisha aren't used even once in filler tv episodes after their debuts. Yeah, remember that's very early in the show. Aside from the historical chapter and some extended scenes, there wasn't much Oshii original there. The Oshii stuff mostly starts in the 30s (the initial one story per episode ones often still adapted more than one chapter, just without a 2nd title).

It happened a few times in the manga, although she really didn't ever receive focus during it, which is probably why some people overlook it. Remember stuff like the love umbrella, for example, Ukyo was right alongside everyone throwing pointy weapons at Akane and Ranma.

Whenever Ukyo received focus, she was generally shown to be level headed (aside from her obsession with Ranma lasting years), but she often was just thrown in group scenes as another wacky suitor.

Older (and even recent-ish) Viz stuff is getting harder and harder to come by. It took me months to finish collecting the reprinted, unflipped Maison Ikkoku books...some of the new copies ranged into the 50s and 60s. I have a couple I bought used from libraries. One I think I got from England. For some reason I think volumes 6 and 8 were the hardest to find.

Does Oshii ever do interviews about the Urusei Yatsura TV Series? Most of them seem to be about Beautiful Dreamer.

I would actually say it's pretty underrated, after all it's still one of the Takahashi series that managed to get an actual ending and I also personally find it better than other shonen series of its ilk like Naruto and Bleach.

I'd just recommend watching movie 4 after the tv finale, rather than a few episodes before. The last episode has some scenes that foreshadow some stuff from the movie so watching it afterwards is kind of odd.

Also, Movie 5 is the manga finale, so you should leave it to after the OVAs, since they're mostly manga adaptations of earlier stories. Also, the tv ending is filler, but actually has more closure than the manga's (although it's still open overall) so, keep that in mind while watching the OVAs and movie 5 after the tv ending.
