I wish courses for exotic languages wouldn't cost so much here in Europe.
My uni only has English and Chinese, and the neighboring uni has one Japanese course that costs around 130€ with about the same description as yours.

Honestly if I did take class I'd at least want to take the upper levels so it wouldn't be a complete waste of time, because in higher level classes at least you have to write real japanese "essays" (in quotes because they probably don't have to be longer than a couple paragraphs) and get them corrected.

This shit always throws me off. You'll have characters in a VN talk in baby Japanese about how they woke up and ate breakfast, and then suddenly some obscure joke about shogunates during the Nanboku-cho period with a pile of strange words with furigana that don't even show up in Edict will somehow pop into the conversation.
>>
>>145750646
this is called "bad writing"

There's nothing necessarily bad about that. People use simple language when discussing simple subjects and obscure language when discussing obscure subjects.

I think he was one of the "anything too hard for me to understand is bad writing" types.
>>
>>145751030
No, bad writing is turning the morning breakfast talk with really simple language in the speech and narration into a complicated joke that literally requires the author to tell you what's going on to understand the joke.

Literary writing is one thing, but stuffing obscure words into a twist on a simple slice of life scene for shock value is just bad writing.

Why does it sound like 次 is being pronounced "つに" instead of "つぎ”?

Is Anki just trying to fuck me? Or does this imply a pronunciation rule in Japanese?
>>
>>145751438
Pronunciation varies between people. Wait till you here people saying words with ひ
Hint: it's a slightly nasally g
>>
>>145751438
It's the "ng" sound. In tokyo, the "g" sound can be replaced by the "ng" sound in most place. Since it can be done in tokyo, it's considered normal japanese. The formal pronunciation is still "tsu-gi", with a normal old hard g.
>>
>>145751475

Yeah ひ can be a bit tricky. I've asked a question about that one before too. It's like a mix between "she" and "he" (english) sounds, with the middle of your tongue pressed closely to the roof of your mouth, correct? That's what I've gathered, at least

Anki is a program that only outputs what you put in. Maybe the advice in the Guide should read more like "If you are going to learn Japanese, don't be a fucking idiot".

Listen to different Japanese people saying the word. I'm sure you can handle a search engine. After all, none of us can hear how you hear.
>>
>>145751594
You make はへほ in the very back of your mouth, at your vocal chords, like a normal English H.

ひ is slightly forwards of that, at your palate. It's the same place that やゆよ are formed. The middle of the tongue rises up and makes a small gap at the top of your mouth for air to rush through.

>>
>>145752940

Seems unlikely because it's pronounced "umoku" in both the example sentence and first audio file, and the Japanese sentence matches the English sentence
>>
>>145752940
It's a common word, and the word is not pronounced "umoku", and the sound file would not have an incorrect pronunciation, and go->mo is not a regular sound change. Therefore, the pronunciation in the sound file cannot reasonably be umoku. If it were, we would know about it already, because a large number of people use the deck.
>>
>>145752940
its the same manner of softening as it is in 次

>>
>>145753005

You sound educated and like you know what you're talking about, but with all due respect, I'm not deaf and have good hearing, and it is objectively pronounced "umoku" on Anki for me, not even remotely close to a "g" sound or a half-sound of a letter that sounds closer to an "m" than another letter. I mean, it's an obvious "m" sound.

Let's see:
- Beginner who probably can't tell ng from m because english doesn't put ng at the start of syllables
- Literally everyone else

Yeah, no. You're literally just hearing it incorrectly. Japanese does not have the same phonemic system as english. You are interpreting a japanese sound sequence the best you can, but your brain is literally just not used to distinguishing m from ng at the start of syllables, it's only used to distinguishing them at the end of words.

>This doesn't have to be a big deal
I don't know why you're making the fact that your brain hasn't yet adapted to the variations in sounds in japanese a big deal. It just hasn't. There's nothing to be ashamed of. Neural networks can only tell the difference between a similar A and B after being fed A and B enough times. The phonemic processing stages of verbal memory are the same.

You are mishearing ŋ as m. When it is in the middle of a word, g can be softened to ɣ or ŋ in Japanese. This is ŋ.

Please compare the two sounds:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velar_nasal
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilabial_nasal

You will see they are identical except for their point of articulation. Because you are an English speaker, you are not accustomed to hearing ŋ between two vowels like that, and so you automatically interpret it as m.
>>
>>145753590
That's definitely a "ng" sound, m8. Don't make assertions when you're a beginner.
>>
>>145753701

Lol. I assume you it's "umoku," the mic just doesn't pick it up loud enough on the headset to capture it. It's much louder on my computer and much more clear. But at least you can clearly tell it's NOT "ugoku"

>Obviously, that sounds far more like "umoku" than "ugoku,"
That's the part where you're wrong. From a spectral point of view, ŋ is closer to g than m in this particular word. The only reason you think it sounds so much like m is because you're not used to hearing it in that location in a word. Your brain is literally reinforcing the "m" sound. Sharpening of the properties of "identified" sounds is one of the few well-documented effects of a "trained ear" on auditory echo memory. You're basically literally hearing what you want to hear. No, it's not your fault. You just need to shut up and study more until your brain recognizes the sound properly.

As per request of an anon a couple of threads ago:
DoJG Concept Notes Image Conversion Project
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NB-Vw5Btt9r5CUgxqtZtzxr9_9LhnFAnR1LbuvJexgw/edit?usp=sharing

I hope it is self explanatory but if not, I'm working on converting all of those images you'll find embedded in those Dictionary of Japanese Grammar Anki decks. It isn't for those decks, you can see where they are going as linked in the above spreadsheet.
The 基本 BASIC page already has 間・あいだ(に) converted, if you want to see an example. An anon asked me to draw up the spreadsheet because he thought it could be done quickly via crowd sourcing. I don't have the same trust in other anons as he does, but please feel free to use it or not use it as you desire. Either way I'm looking to have them all done within a handful of months regardless.
Posted the link to the DJT site Feedback page, requesting the (PUBLIC QC) link/page to be replaced with this, but the site appears unmonitored.

A searchable pdf still needs to be adopted to plain text/html. Unless I've completely misunderstood your post and in that case, my bad. Would you mind posting the link to the searchable pdf so I can see how well copy/paste works into something like notepad?

I think you should rename the TOP redirect to Table of Chapters or something. I'm thinking a lot of beginners might find this through some reply in /djt/ and then, thinking of something else to ctrl+f that they've been wondering about, end up with hundreds of highlights from example sentences and so on because they started searching somewhere in the middle of the page.

There is no point in taking any JLPT test unless you want it for career or scholarship purposes

If you want a quantitative gauge of your own ability, the J-CAT is perfectly sufficient (ruling out the possibility that you guess a lot of questions right). Otherwise your ability to comprehend or even read stuff you're into is good enough for you to tell where you are in terms of learning rn

Hmm that gives you some extra time to work with. If I were you I'd just learn it in my spare time at a comfortable pace then evaluate my progress at the 1 or 2 year mark. After which I'd decide whether passing N1 is a goal within reach, which it should be. That gives you a lot of time to find out whether you have the discipline to keep learning jp instead of learning at 100% capacity and giving up while shitting on your med school studies at the same time

That way if you do think that you're gonna go for it after 1 or 2 years of studying there's plenty of time to study for the test specifically. I haven't taken taken the JLPT yet but from what I've read cramming using shin kanzen master books a couple months before the test is enough to secure you a pass. They're pretty good actually, the N1 ones at least

>>145772122
>が is "despite" here.

They're very long ears by the way.

I thought it was talking about how it resembles how rabbit ears spring up, but I guess the manufacturer is just an idiot.

For one there is no potential form here. They weren't "able to recognize" it, they did. Rather than recognize this situation calls for "acknowledge it as" or "approve of it as."
Like, imagine a kid's shitty painting of a rabbit and despite the excessively retarded rendition of it both the kid and his mother 認識 it as rabbit. That's basically OPs sentence.

As for it being called a rabbit,

Both Hanako and the manufacturer were of the appearance of acknowledging it to be a rabbit.

I think the 様子 is part of all the textbook's (?) practice descriptions of pictures. Just their thing, like in "In this picture we have the scenario of:" and then the description before the 様子.
>>
>>145772895
It's not my book and that may be true.
But using 様子 to describe a person is a common thing. It implies that Hanako appears to be doing this thing, but that the speaker can only say what she appears to be doing and not what her real intentions are.
>>
>>145772805

You can add head and tail bands, plus bookmarks, to hardcovers quite easily. It'd cost maybe 25¢ per book, and it's easy to do - they're literally just glued in at the ends.

Everyman's Library set of hardcover classics are really beautiful, and I'd suggest checking out a novel from then to see what a quality hardcover in the West is like.

Could you add the sentence or two before this one, to show how the backpack is introduced?

This phrasing seems like a way to distance the viewpoint character or the author from the recognition of this bag as rabbit-styled, while still fairly acknowledging the fact that the bags are nevertheless made and bought as rabbit-styled bags.

It would be hard to phrase this much differently without making it seem like the bag is objectively un-rabbitlike.

I feel like I'm still too inexperienced to do that though.

See pic related.
Mangastream translated it as Totland. As a German I thought this can't be right because it means "Death Land" and thought it might have been Tortland instead which would mean "Cake Land".

But then I look at the raw and it's written as トット which is a mispronounciation of both, and the Kanji doesn't help either.

I'm sure it's not German now but I still have no clue what the name means. Oda is not a guy to just throw out names without any significance behind it.

While reading, you'll be making some mistakes but also reading a lot of stuff correctly. The good news is that the mistakes correct themselves. Correct vocab and grammar will be reinforced as you run into it over and over again, while mistakes will naturally be forgotten through the lack of repetition and exposure to contrary examples.

Translator mistakes are a bit more dangerous, but take the translation with a grain of salt and you'll be fine. Chances are that you'll start finding fault with the translator's work before you're done with the first tankobon.

Don't be a fucking retard. Any form of efficient learning requires some kind of feedback. If you run into a sentence you don't understand, and have no translation for to help you understand, you're not learning. Even worse would be thinking you understand something, while you're actually getting it wrong.

>>145777257
I'm sure things will work out half decently in the long run, but it's really not a good approach. You can't possibly think it's a good idea to just bash your head against challenging material thinking "Well, maybe it translates to something like this. I might have a better idea if I see this construction 10 more times."

Why do we need two versions for kanji like 還る and 帰る, 捜す and 探す, 遣う and 使う, etc? Is it something to do with volitional vs. non-volitional verbs or some shit?

Also to clarify, I'm obviously not saying you should use shitty fan translations, that might be even worse. But obviously doing it without any help is not a good idea either, so you need something else.
Are official translations any good? I don't really know much about this stuff, but you have Shonen Jump publishing some manga for example.
>>
>>145777711

>>
>>145777684

>>
>>145776546
You'd be amazed just how common these mistakes are, just read a random manga alongside a fan translation and no matter how bad you are you'll find an inexplicable mistake. Back when I was a beginner my favorite part was not understanding a hard sentence, checking the translation and then seeing them just bullshit their way through with some made up lines as well.

It differs from group to group but I'd guess the average is 1 definitive mistake, like failing to understand how くれる and しか work, every 4 pages

Speaking from experience, I do think it's a good idea to read the most challenging material you can find that doesn't make you give up or avoid reading. The pain threshold is obviously a personal thing.
The problem you mention (sentences which aren't settled by a dictionary, a grammar reference and a translation taken with a grain of salt) is very rare, happening once in many pages. It's even rarer that it actually has an impact on your understanding of the story.
And the other side of the equation is the mountains of learning that you will be doing, by reading the sentences that you can understand or look up to your satisfaction.
