That's the part where you're wrong. From a spectral point of view, ŋ is closer to g than m in this particular word. The only reason you think it sounds so much like m is because you're not used to hearing it in that location in a word. Your brain is literally reinforcing the "m" sound. Planning on doing an exchange in 4 years through my med school, and if I want to do it in Japanese (which I do), I need to pass N1.
