I mean you can do this with anything
>Daitoshokan
>protagonists one character trait is that he likes reading
>overly annoying cheerful blonde character
>overly annoying unpopular-with-girls sidekick

What's important is whether or not the VN is good, and Daitoshokan, and Flyable Heart, are both very good VNs.

Posting an update once more before getting stuck into working on converting the notes.
The Basic, Intermediate and Advanced pages now have their interactive table of contents. Unless there are any major oversights or minor improvements that could be done, I'll probably be spending the next few months working on the notes and not really poking into these threads. Here is an example of a concept entry that already has the concept note image converted, for an example of eventually how ever entry will appear: http://bunpou.neocities.org/基本basic.html# 間・あいだ(に)

The site has a feedback and comments link at the bottom, on the front page. If you have any comments, ideas, spot and typos, etc. please don't hesitate to use the form. While I probably won't be checking these threads, it's a google form so I'll get an email when someone posts something.

both? i feel like i remember better after i write things out, anyway so..
the srs anki method hasnt been working out for me, unless i should be doing more then just looking at the words and trying to remember what it looks like and what they mean. i've opted to write it out instead (e.g. when i can't seem to get the word correctly, i write it out a couple of times and it becomes easier to remember) because i feel like i have better retention that way.
>>
>>145711321
If you want to do both, grind through the flash card, but also learn the stroke order and write it a hundred times each following that stroke order everytime.

Muscle memory is how people remember to write kanji.

It has been months since I last opened Anki, I have lost the habit.
It took a while to get into the habit and now I'm out of it I fucked up.

I might have to reset everything and start from the beginning.
>>
>>145711342
thanks! also, what's the best settings for the anki flashcards? or the most optimal setting that most people use? because i've just been using a variation between Eng(front) -> Jap(back[with Kanji, kana]) and Jap(front[with Kana,Kanji]) -> Eng

not sure if that's the best method of doing it though so if you (or anyone, really) could give me pointers that'd be great.

thanks!!

Don't do this, it's a massive way of time.
Take a week to power through the reps. Do a batch of 100 every hour.

I recently did the same with 3000+ pent up reviews. It's easier than you might think.

If you only have three months, you should completely abandon learning the written language. You can still use the pickup line of "how do you read this kanji?" though, but you'd be better off sticking to tinder/hellotalk and slumming around various bars (okay, just Hub) looking for gaijin hunters or other foreigners who feel alienated because they can't speak to anyone outside of their bubble. Shibuya and Shinjuku are the best places for meeting drunk people who want to show off their English, but of course it'll get old fast. Do check out a few bars in Shinjuku's Golden Gai though, they're used to tourists.

Really though, if you were able to get into a manga cafe for the night, you managed a bit better than most beginners that I know.

Which is right? Is there a difference?

I'd always worked under the assumption that 間 was read as あいだ when not part of a compound, but anki just threw up 間, read as かん, with the example sentence starting そのかん.

British pub that's basically just a foreigner bar. They're everywhere in Tokyo, and they're largely shit if you've been to actual bars, but if you're stressing for friends, you might make some. Japanese girls are usually pretty, but the ratio is usually skewed towards guys. I'd say go on a Fri/Sat and see though, if you have money to burn. Half pints are only 400 yen.

It's what you make of it, really. I basically live in Kabukicho so I'm used to 24/7 life here, but I vastly preferred life in the countryside before I moved here.

Lively bars and clubs generally stay open till 4-5 am, so people can make the first train, but you're gonna have to have some cash to spend to last that long, and honestly? If you can't find your way into that scene already, it's not for you. It's not for me either, but the occasional beer and 3 am ramen is nice.

You probably shouldn't compare it to London or Hong Kong though; Tokyo's a tourist destination, but for most of us, it's just a place to live and work.
>>
>>145713595
The ~おう form means "let's help out", but with the か it's more like "Shall I/we give you a hand?"
It's hard to say with so little context, it could also be someone talking to themselves thinking "I guess I'll help out too" or whatever.

How do you test your proficiency?
I don't mean JCAT, I mean something like a online quiz or test.

I can't just sit and read a book, I need tests where I can attempt the questions and then check against the answers.
I can't do this with some things because If I do it too often it isn't testing my comprehension just my ability to remember the right answers for that particular test.

That is useless to me, I need something that tells me where I went wrong and that I can do again and again (if it has enough variation that is)

I know what I would get from JCAT, I am only strong with Kanji and Vocab recognition and would likely fail grammar and everything else.

Japanese requires perseverance.
You should be deciding based on whether you have the sufficient motivation to learn Japanese, after all you are going to spending an hour or so everyday, hours every week to learn.

As a hobby it isn't a bad one to be honest, as long you are an organised person and enjoy it.
Too many people here do this as a form of self punishment it seems.

The vast majority of manga scanlations are done by fucking stupid blind idiots who fuck up the meaning of the text in their "translations" and sometimes make it mean the exact opposite. That's not even taking in account the ridiculous amount of manga that aren't fully translated or that are stalled for years on end. If you care at all about enjoying manga you would learn Japanese.

Learning Japanese is like memorizing a long poem, it takes a long time, but pretty much anyone can do it with ease if they have the time.

Learning German is like trying to work out a complicated maths problem in your head, taking a terrible amount of mental strain and effort, but not much time.

>and follows rules very nicely unlike German.
Yeah, but unlike German the rules are vague as fuck. German has a lot of rules and a lot of exceptions to those rules, but even those exceptions have rules to them you can memorize. Being tedious is different than being difficult. German might be tedious, but it's the kind of language you actually could learn by anki droning for two years. Japanese is absolutely impossible to learn without natural input which you have to evaluate on your own in order to grasp the rules.

Would anyone know how one would one go about reading the kanji 蛇?
It is normally 'hebi' and used as 'snake', but after rewatching some Monogatari I caught the fact that it can also be read as 'kuchinawa' which is 'serpent'.
Are both completely acceptable or is there some kind of context or other kanji usually associated with it to differentiate.
I am assuming that if one was to read a sentence with the character out loud, they would most likely just say 'hebi'.
In a similar way the average english person would say 'snake', where as 'serpent' means the same thing but is a more poetic use.
>>
>>145719138
hebi 99% of the time, the 1% of the time it's read otherwise there'll be furigana
>>
>>145719138
There's like hundreds of words like that where you don't know the pronunciation because it could be multiple things.
>>
>>145718585
I don't get what you're getting at by saying there's chaos - sure it was a lot of effort to adapt a massive amount of words to new spellings, but those changes were made in order to make the rules more accurate. The chaos got reduced. And either way, something like the rechtschreibreform isn't going to stunt your learning as a foreigner.

Like I get what you're saying and all, but the rules behind Japanese grammar are not simple. They objectively are not. The proof is the difficulty in creating machines that can use those rules to translate Japanese, like just look at the difficulty in explaining the difference between が and は. It's insane how so many people can call Japanese grammar simple, saying the only difficulty is the writing system, when even the very basics lack clear rules.
I guess the idea that Japanese is simple comes from the lack of complicated rules, which can be attributed to the fact that those rules are literally too elaborate to formulate.
>>
>>145719138
It's the authors choice how it's read by using furigana. They could even put サーペント on top of it and it's fine.

Same with any language. But Japanese takes more time. You can use your own definition of hard if you want but you have to understand that it's not the definition other people are using and just makes you come across as a pedant.

Memorizing large amounts of information is actually difficult under pretty much any reasonable definition of the word.
>>
>>145719237
I really can't compare it since I only had to learn English and a bit of Italian before, but I really don't think Japanese grammar is much harder than what I had to deal with in Italian.

>>
>>145719467
>but I really don't think Japanese grammar is much harder than what I had to deal with in Italian.
If that were true anyone could translate everything Japanese after a few months of studying by using a dictionary. How do you explain the amount of mistakes in translations if the grammar is so simple? What's there to fuck up when you can look up every word you'd normally have to memorize?
You could learn the essential rules to Italian grammar in literally 2 weeks of self study and then start reading native material up to intermediate level by using a dictionary and googling verbs' conjugations. Japanese doesn't allow that. Why do you think that is?

Self-punishment is too light a term for those 4 months. I felt like puking every single time I sat to do my reps, tired after a day at work. But it was necessary. After that I continued with the RTK reps as I read through TK's grammar, and went back to core. And this time grammar made sense, vocab stuck, and I was having fun learning Japanese for the first time. Finishing the 2k deck and starting mining on my own felt amazing in and of itself, but actually understanding the first few sentences of Harukuru was so damn worth those 9 months of self-punishment.

A man can only stumble for so long before he either falls or stands up straight, so to those of you who feel like they're going nowhere or have doubts if they can do it: you can learn Japanese. 生きてもっと苦しめ。

I used the inability to translate as a proof. You countered saying it's not the same. I provided an example.

Explain why the people in the examples managed to get it wrong despite having a PC and basic grammar knowledge (which is simple, don't forget)

Then again I say explain, but of course you can't, because you are wrong. Your off topic remark isn't wrong, but if you were trying to make an on-topic argument with it then you failed, because it provides nothing to either defend your point or counter mine.

Is it normal that I feel like I'm only learning recognition by using the core 2k deck? I assumed that's what it's for (unless you write out every kanji as you learn it) because I can find the kanji while typing if I know the reading and I can learn to write specific kanji by hand only if I need to
>>
>>145724157
Well mostly, if you want to learn production use English -> Japanese cards.

With core there's also the sentence audio to aid listening/pronounciation.
You can learn to write kanji too if you want to make that effort, no one's hindering you.

I ignorantly swore by using core 6k for production all the time, because it was harder in the beginning with all the synonyms and unfamiliar sounds leading me to give incorrect pronunciations involved.

I switched to Recognition about 3k words in, just to prove that recognition was easy mode and not real learning. Turns out I spend about the same time per day, but my retention rate is higher and I'm focusing on the Japanese audio instead of trying to match words across languages.

My retention rate is really high, so it probably helped in the long run, but it really isn't the optimum way unless you're actually translating for a living, since you want to minimize the time you spend thinking in English anyways.

Dear anons of the /djt/

As you've probably noticed, I haven't been around a whole lot the past few months. The co-editor of the guide has been doing a great job for all that I can tell.

I've been going other directions in my life, and I don't think that it's appropriate for me to in charge of the guide any longer, as I've largely lost touch with this place and my interest in Japanese after two and a half years.

Hence, as of today, I'm leaving the guide in the hands of the laborious co-editor who has been taking care of it for a long time already. Ownership of the document has been put into her hands and I've given up my editing access to it.

I don't think there will be any need for this, but please do remember that you are absolutely free to create and modify copies of the guide, and to petition them against the current guide. The whole backend of the /djt/ is very loosely organized and run by various people, and ultimately all that needs to be changed is the OP which anyone can make. Nothing is stopping you from introducing change if you consider it to be necessary, either through dialogue or whatever other actions are possible through the means that 4chan (and the internet) provide you with.
I see that there are people making efforts for the good of others in this thread, please don't hesitate to become one of them.

Happy learning and さようなら dear anons

Change your anki settings a bit. For example if you fail a card let anki put it at 20% of it's last interval instead of a total reset.
That way you can work in new cards and the ones you half know but get wrong once in a while won't take up so much of your reviews.

Also maybe add in one more stage for new cards, so that you have to good them 3 times instead of 2. That helps me remember them better initially.

Play around with the settings until you're comfortable with it.

Sure. It was a very nice experience. I was there for three weeks, Tokyo and Kyoto. I think the first thing that comes to mind when I think back is the incredibly cheap and good food, and how polite the cashiers were. Akihabara was also lots of fun, I picked up a ton of second hand manga and figurines. And almost every place in Kyoto that wasn't the main street felt like a neighborhood from 200 years ago, if you ignore the power lines.

Yeah, I'll probably go with that for the plate since I'm a lazy shit, but I'm learning CAD and E-CAD anyway as a part of my current education, so I'll have fun designing a case and PCB with all the features to my liking. The idea I have is relatively complex (by typical keyboard standards), which is why I'm putting it off until I have the time, knowledge and money to actually realize it the way I'm imagining it.
And I also still want to try out some more switches and materials before I decide on what I'll finally use.

It's not cheating. The real difficulty lies in picking the right definition from Rikai anyway, based on the context the sentence provides.

well using rikai inside anki is basically cheating, unless youre only using it for example sentence in which case why bother

From the advertizer info:
>Unique visitors per month: 27,700,000
>Posts per day: 900,000-1,000,000

Now it's up to you to assume how many posts a poster makes per month. The numbers would fit quite perfectly with only one post per user/month. If you assume every poster makes at least 2 posts per month, you're already looking at ~14m people who just look. I assume the real stats to be much more drastic.
