NO, that isn't the point. The anime sold well because it was anime otaku pandering, literally. Having cute characters caring about otaku hobbies is not just clear pandering but also really bad and simple one. Regardless of how the story ended the series still open the door for imitators that would basically play with the same premise with otaku culture at the center of the plot, with otakus or people invested in the culture (usually atractive girls as well) and then develop a retarded meta narrative around it.

But since it was a financial success then more and more started to copy this "style" of pandering where now you see it everywhere. Shit is hilarious and horrible at the same time.
