It's good enough to be revered by both newbies and veterans. Probably the best shounen anime ever made. If you start your journey into anime with FMAB (as many people do after watching Avatar), your adventure with shounen is pretty much ruined, and you'll spend your whole life searching for something that tops it, to no avail.

Some people say HxH is better. But HxH is in a bit different league entirely, and has that "hasn't finished, so we give it some hope until it goes bad" status. In terms of closed storylines with 40-80 episodes, FMAB trumps all other beginner anime, be that Death Note or Code Geass.

The only way to even find something objectively better than FMAB is to branch out from the action-adventure shounen genre. And even then it's not that easy at first (you have to delve into dramas, psychological thrillers and artsy stuff like Katanagatari).

What they share, the first one does better and Brotherhood shits the bed with the last twenty episodes, it drags on forever when there's not enough content.

I've only finished Brotherhood since it followed the manga story line. I've heard the ending was terrible for the original series and I was happy enough with Brotherhood to not care about watching it.

If you're new to FA, don't start with it. You're better off starting with the 06 anime than with Brotherhood. Of course, you're even better off starting with the manga.

it's melodramatic, has unbelievably bad direction, and horrible comedy. the world logic seemed like a clusterfuck to me, and ed's voice actress made me want to kill myself, but on the other hand it has really nice animation and a lot of action.
