Definitely this, plus on the second playthrough he has a voice for dialogue choices. I was skeptical about a silent protagonist but they did a good job with him- he got exasperated, flustered, and generally acted more like an adult than I'm used to seeing from Tales protags. It helped that Elle was there to help act as his voice sometimes too.

Check out Absolute Zero- they've translated a lot of Tales games, Innocence being one of them. Just get desmume, the ISO for Innocence, and AZ's patch and you're good to go. Might have to do some tweaking in desmume to fix a few sound issues but I've been playing it with no issues after fixing the audio. Well since they registered the Innocence trademark but didn't release because Vita sales sucked (DS sales apparently mean nothing), did strange things to Hearts' localization, stiffed us of the PS3 version of Vesperia, botched Destiny's localization, and take a year or more to release anything to us in general, I'd say we're pretty low on their list of priorities. Better to play for free now and pay later if they do bring it over at some point.

Even if it's par for the course, companies like Squeenix are doing simultaneous global releases now. JRPG fans are used to waiting years for a chance at a localization of any kind, but with how much easier it is to do global distributions these days, is there really much of an excuse other than "home market first, filthy gaijin get it when it's been redone for them"? It's business sense, sure. But by the time stuff gets released for us here my hype is kind of dead and I'm not as excited about the series in general. I love Tales but I don't feel loved by the devs is what I'm saying, I suppose.

Square Enix is still likely king of the roost when it comes to JRPGs in the West. As you say though it probably is still a sentiment of Namco putting Japan first and getting around to everybody else in a timely manner.

Honestly, Namco's attitude doesn't seem different from most other Japanese companies, they all seem to suffer from an extreme case of navel gazing. For example, Nintendo continually opens Pokecenters in Japan, yet they turned the only one in the US into an overall Nintendo store which I'm guessing has a decent portion devoted to Pokemon.

Regardless of whether the aforementioned just sells crap, it smells of them saying they'll take out shekels for games, but they're not going to try and do anymore than they have to.

Yeah, Namco could do a lot better with regards to Tales, but in the West I think they're still in the phase where I'm willing to give them some slack.

Oh I know there isn't much basis in the games, I think Rita/Estelle and Alisha/Rose are the only couples people would really bring up, maybe Leia/Agria.

It's really not with Tales but with other series that I sometimes see it happen, I feel like it's being shoved down my throat. Not just yuri either, same thing happened with Velvet/Laphicet and I'm sure it'll happen again.

I like Tear too, but you gotta admit the relationship between her and Luke is really forced. Maybe it's because everyone knows Luke's true age and the fact that he behave like a 7 year old, the game constantly reminding you of that fact, and Tear really just treating Luke as more of a younger brother than a love interest. I think Sorey and Mikleo are possibly the only ones you could argue and even then it probably errs more towards two really good friends or brothers. What makes people dislike Anise isn't just the fact that she's a bitch but also because of her behavior right after Azeriuth. It gets worse when you realize that she's a spy working for Mohs and was also responsible for Ion's death. Then after you find out everything her attitude towards Arietta becomes unjustified.

They've been releasing games here since the mid nineties, and they've only just started to reliably give us each major title in some form. Zestiria was the first one where we weren't forced to use the English dub, too. There are also situations like Heart's and Link's half-assed translations to think about. Things are getting better but I'm wondering how much longer I'm going to have to be patient for.

There's one thing I can say for sure they've improved on: not re-releasing the same game with more content a year after the initial release (Innocence R, Hearts R, Graces f, etc.). I suppose it would have a lot to do with their production timeline and at what point they send the game out for the localization. First they have to get the game registered as a trademark so they can market it (in the US at least, can't speak for other countries). They use third-party services to do the English text and transcripts and then a casting service for the voices and that all takes time to arrange on top of the time spent actually translating, editing, and dubbing. Then they have to test the game for possible new bugs introduced before getting certified for release on the console of choice, which takes a month by itself. This on top of licensing for song usage outside of Japan (possibly getting a new version of the opening theme just for the international release), setting up the marketing, and coordinating with distributors.

From the looks of it they send the game out for localization when it's released in Japan, maybe coordinating the terms of service between themselves and the third parties then giving them a copy on release. To do a simultaneous global release you have to have all of that stuff done in tandem with the native language production. It's a massive undertaking now that I look at it... certainly a company the size of Squeenix has the resources to do it. Bamco's Tales team? Probably not.

Basically they wanted a next-gen presence but they hadn't seen what the PS3 was capable of yet while the Xbox360 was already established and popular. Developing for the 360 meant developing with Westerners in mind from the get-go. So it can be done, but it's a huge financial risk. I'm assuming that the fact that they haven't done the same process since means that it was too troublesome for the cost, despite the apparent success.

If you don't git gud, then yeah ToZ fights require you to use the seraphim as a crutch. Usually it's Mikleo because his kamui moveset is designed to stunlock or AOE from afar, and its trigger heal is a free elixir. However going by pure damage output, Lailah's kamui is more broken because its spell casting animation triggers faster than an enemy can interrupt so you can AOE in the middle of a group, and there are spells and accessories you can use to astronomically boost fire damage. Her heal just really really sucks.

If you're good enough you don't need to kamui at all unless you're trying to keep your HP up. At that point you're playing like the AI though...

If you don't look for various skits, you wouldn't find anything as romantic proof. But putting those into consideration (Mikleo wanting to tell Sorey something but deciding not to in NG+, them both saying they like someone but won't tell Zaveid, etc) the evidence is there.

It's just not explicit enough in the main story, as ironically their relationship is not all that developed in game.

See, proved my point. Most people didn't unlock or even know of the existence of the majority of Zestiria skits because of how poorly implemented they were. This one in particular is easy to miss.

In NG+, Sorey and Mikleo can travel back to Elysia in the beginning of the game. A scene will be triggered where they're talking alone on a hill. Sorey asks Mikleo what he wanted to tell him and Mikleo says he forgot, but he'll tell him 'next time', implying it's after Sorey wakes up.

So in the post-game scene when they say "some other time/next time", they're saying it with the knowledge that there might not be a next time for a long while if ever. Asch only appears to mature at first glance but the more you find out about the more you realize that he's an even bigger brat than long haired Luke.

First of all the only reason why he wants to stop Van isn't because he he's against him, but rather because Van was going to create a world of replicas. If not for that then Asch would have gladly gone along with Van.

Then there's his whole "that Replica took my life sthick" at the beginning you feel sorry for him, but in reality there's really nothing to feel sorry for. Asch could have easily have taken back his life, if he wanted to, and is even given a chance to do just that in the actual game. In fact it might work out better for Luke and Asch since everyone in the manor would rather have Asch than his replica and Luke would be happier living with Guy in Malkuth. However, Asch chooses not to return not because he's been replaced (he hasn't) not because isn't wanted (he is), but rather because he doesn't want to. In reality Asch is choosing not the return however he just wants to blame everything on Luke, when it's really Asch's choice to stay away.

If you pay attention to the things Asch says you'll realize that he really doesn't make any sense, which is part of why Guy doesn't like him.

Her personality type always irks me. The motherly childhood friend type is usually just a nuisance with how they nag and get offended at "gross" things. Cheria was better than I expected, and it was nice that she definitively won the Asbelb owl (overcoming his density was no small feat), but the rest of the cast was so much better. I think Pascal having fun at her expense made her tolerable.

To be honest, I love the Graces cast. They don't do well on their own but their skits and end-of-battle scenes were some of the best.
