ore is masculine and for middle to young adult age, boku is young male typically and 自信ないタイプ, watashi is neutral and atashi/watakushi are feminine, iirc.

>>143808486
Girls sometimes use ore and boku too.
>>
>>143808523
I never said whether or not girls or boys were restricted on using them I just said what their affiliations with gender are
ore is masculine and if a girl uses it its kinda weird, boku is said by tomboys in anime alot
i know of a single male character that uses atashi as well
so it's not restricted it's just how they're seen gender-wise

Looks like a joke, but seriously just keep at it.
I'm getting at the point while doing my kanji deck that I'm getting the meaning of some stuff just from similar/past words.

Also, one trick I use is to use association with anything you remember or enjoy.
For example I always forget this 合板 but it only took me one look at 戦 to never forget it (because of 戦乙女).

I'm having trouble with this sentence.
冗長で形容詞や修飾語が多い文章は形式的文書を不似合いです。
Its mostly the が then は

The two translations that come to mind are:
>Because of redundancy of adjectives and modifiers, many sentences are improper for formal documents.
>Many sentences with redundant adjectives and modifiers are unfit for formal documents.

Am I even close? I've never encounterd a 'noun が noun' before.
>>
>>143810363

何でも知ってない、お前の書くのが。。。
>>
>>143810889
sentences where tedious adjectives and modifiers are many are unsuitable for formal documents

german handles this kind of awkward construction with V2; japanese handles it with allowing relative clauses to use の instead of が; english handles it by allowing you to break the language's grammar's legs
>>
>>143810889
It's not noun が noun, it's (noun が adjective)-noun.
頭が赤い猫
Cat with a red head.
(Could also be "my head is a red cat," so like >>143811172 said you could remove some ambiguity by using の instead of が, but obviously not all of it. With の its second meaning would be "my head's red cat" instead.)

And then English turned into the perfect language for technical documentation.
>>
>>143811172
>>143811430
I think I understand, but it is still confusing. Seems like it ends up as whichever way makes the most sense is the right way to translate it.
>>
>>143811570
There's only one technically correct structure to translate it. There's a relative clause that states "There are a lot of tedious adjectives and modifiers". That relative clause is applied to "sentences". This modified "sentences" is then applied to the predicate "is/are unsuitable for formal documents".

You can change the wording of each part but you can't move pieces between the parts. That's where most translations fail and change the original meaning.
>>
>>143811570
That's exactly how it ends up. Though it should calm you to know that no other way makes any amount of sense whatsoever in the context of your sentence.

I am just starting out. Week two of self study.

In learning the hiragana, I've found that I learn best in the following way. I memorize entire words, simple ones like "ai" or "oyasumi" or something, then use my knowledge of the whole word to remember the individual characters.

I know a few hundred words from watching shows, and mentally map words to characters.

>week two
>learning the hiragana

Even assuming both that this is the start of your second week and that you're now completely done with them, that's still barely more than a column a day. If you're actually serious about learning Japanese, you need to consider that a large portion of the beginner phase will be simply grinding out vocabulary in kanji. Ask yourself honestly - if it's taken you this long to learn less than 50 fairly simple characters associated only with a sound, can you really see yourself going through (at least) 20 words a day, containing maybe 5-10 new kanji(which by the way usually have at least 2 standard readings you'll need to remember, with some having 4, 5, or more - oh and then there are words which don't use any of these readings at all)? I'm not trying to say you should quit, but seriously consider the amount of time and effort you're willing to put in and the extent to which that lines up with your goals.

read more. don't try to translate particles or think about what they "mean", just read native content and focus on understanding sentences as a whole rather than thinking about individual parts. The more you read, the more you'll build an intuitive sense of how each particle is used to express various concepts

Absolute beginner here.

How the fuck do I really get going with this? I read the sticky, but I feel directionless. I've learned Hiragana and I'm making decent headway on Kata, plus I've remembered a lot of kanji that I've come across.

My question now is, what the fuck do I do? I can't understand any grammar guides because basically I'm fucking retarded and have almost 0 technical understanding of English.

What's something I can do as a beginner to make progress regularly? Is starting off grinding vocab a bad idea? Will my brain just figure out the grammatical syntax on it's own if I can read most of the words in a sentence?

How are they not? They allow you to
-Gain the ability to search for kanji through radical search
-Come up with mnemonics whenever necessary
-Infer what kind of general meaning a kanji will have depending on the main radical used
-Gain the ability to draw nearly every kanji by learning the stroke order of just radicals
-Decipher shitty handwriting
-Differentiate kanji with similar radicals
-Learn and remember phonetic components

I think there is... 当たり has a broad of meaning (similar though), and look at my context guesses:

- Someone's using that expression as analogy to something triggering a very bad situation willingly even, as in why would someone "hit" a blowfish's poison.
- Someone's fishing or something similar and somehow, unexpectedly, accidentally hit a blowfish's poison and that was a terrible situation (like you're in the same water as it), as in "it was a very bad luck for this to have happened"
- A chef and is hitting the poison sack of a blowfish (purposely), someone's seeing this and thinking how things got to that point.

> ead up on the uses of わけ
I don't understand, was there something wrong with the sentence I typed?

My breakdown:
(blowfish poison) (to hit, to get lucky-past) (reasoning for) (no)

But if you mine it in kanji you learn the kanji and the kana at the same time, as opposed to just limiting yourself to kana

You're bound to see words that are "mostly in kana" written in kanji at some point, so you might as well learn the kanji now

How long does it really take to memorize the Hiragana chart on average? I'm trying to write it from memory (what I know), but I still find myself forgetting characters I thought I already knew really well.

I did Tofugu's learn hiragana steps and learned it in like.. 3 or 4 hours of work. After that, you just see it often enough to usually know what something is.

Can I just get a yay or nay here?

I am pretty sure I could also use の in this situation, but は・・・が "feels" like it fits perfectly for describing this aspect of Youtube.

Yes, I have looked at DoJG.
>>
>>143832090
Yes. You can even have multiple は in the sentence and it would/should make the same sense.

I'd say が is more like the "actor" in the sentence (something that actively is or is actively doing something), it seems to denote stronger meaning to the action.

I also think there's slight nuances of meaning when using different particles.

If it's は:
"[About] Youtube's community guideline..." ("normal" context setting, as if you were talking about another subject and changed that to Youtube)
If you wrote that with の, it would be like:
"Youtube has a community guideline that..."
If it's が:
"Youtube's community guideline IS..." (meaning it might've not been before, or is actively doing it now)

you can learn both kana perfectly within a weak. You can memorize and start reading them today if you put some effort into it.

Grammar takes ~1 month to perfect. Kanji/Vocabulary is where the meat is. This can take up to 2 months for the 2000 most used words and to learn the most common kanji.

All in all it takes around ~3 months to read visual novels like you'd read them in your native language.

Of course I assume those 3 months are pure dedicated to Japanese with no free time/school/work to impede your progress.

What >>143832861 said.

Nevertheless, I'll teach you how to look up unknown stuff:

[Lazy Way]
Get an OCR (KanjiTomo for example), mouseover it and voila. If it doesn't work nicely, change scaling, try again, if it doesn't work at all, move to the next step.

[Normal Way]
Do you have an Android phone? If yes, get Google Input and set it to japanese, and use it on your dictionary of choice (I recommend Akebi).
If you don't, use Google Translate, click on the Pencil Icon and draw it there.
Google's drawing recognition thing is way too good, it'll get most scribbles correct and doesn't care about stroke count.

[Hardworking Way]
Learn how to stroke, learn SKIP codes, then search through a bunch of kanjis by typing it's codes/stroke count.
SKIP is basically a way to limit your search of N strokes kanjis with a certain standard.

>>
>>143836944
Thank you! I couldn't have found that by myself so this is really appreciated.
>>
>>143836210
This might be wrong and the lack of context seems a bit impeding but here's my attempt:

"When I think that spanish flavored, mixed even, game-ish mood/atmosphere could go out, I remember making it while getting on that mood."

These sentences are what I find hardest to work on a translation, maybe because my english is limited or maybe because it's impossible to get a sentence with equal order to the original.

I think he/she's basically saying that he remembers making it (context) getting on the mood when he/she thinks of whatever that (that weird description here) game-ish atmosphere could be coming out (context?).

>>143837078
There's no いい on that sentence though, so it's not the meaning of "I want to".

出せたら is just 出す + える (possibility) + たら (point of time it happens)

After thinking a bit more, I'd go with:
"I have memories of making it after getting into the mood when I thought about how that game-ish mood, despite being mixed with spanish flavor, could come out."

Also, 出せたらいい doesn't have the same meaning as "I want" unless it's the speaker's will, so that's far too much of a stretch.

"(If it can come)/(once it comes) out it would be good..." is a more literal meaning of it.

If you're doing something like RTK or KD in anki with recall cards then the English keyword is everything, I've gone through the RTK deck in anki before and the vast majority of the time when I got a card wrong it was either because the keyword was an obscure word that I didn't even know, the keyword was incredibly similar to one or more other keywords that I got mixed up with, or the keyword was only loosely related to the kanji through one of it's more obscure meanings

The one thing I always recommend to everyone is, don't procrastinate with grammar guides more than you need to, jump into reading native material, whether it be yotsuba or whatever, as soon as possible, preferably after finishing all of something like Tae Kim or Japanese the Manga Way, it's much more beneficial to get in there and struggle through native material than it is to fuck around with preparing yourself for ages

I knew the kanas previously though, so I just crammed grammar until I couldn't anymore and translated some stuff to force/practice my understanding.

Now I just study kanjis and practice shitposting in moon here.

what does せよ mean in the bottom right panel here
>>
>>143843712
Not a hundred percent sure, but I think it's part of the word before it and it's a colloquial way of using the te-form.

so it's: 発進せよ

and the よ is just よ
>>
>>143843788
And just to be clear, I'm saying it's basically 発進してよ
>>

It's the imperative form of する

>>143843712
Not from me, found this elsewhere:

せよ comes from classical (literary) Japanese. しろ is a more colloquial and much harsher sounding command.
The classical 命令形 are:
する → せよ
くる → こよ
たべる → たべよ
くう → くえ

Different person, but I've only started about a week ago and got gana/kana down and kinda went right into translating a game. I've read bits of Tae Kim, but not from start to finish. I have Mecab and JParser helping me split up sentences and give definitions, but the vocabulary and conjugations elude me, but I am getting a bit of a feel of how particles are used.

Am I rushing things? Or should I sit down and focus solely on studying grammar, kanji, or vocab instead?
>>
>>143840103

We're getting old, anon.

It's all over from this point on.
>>
>>143844273
Well it's definitely possibly to just jump right into things and get a grasp of vocab and grammar that way, but I'd imagine that could lead to you having a much harder time down the road

I would personally recommend focusing on grammar and vocab separately, there's nothing stopping you from continuing to read, doing core or mining, and doing tae kim all at the same time, kanji isn't as necessary

But hey you know how you learn best, if you have the motivation to jump into reading after just one week then fuck you might as well make the most of that, it takes most people ages to get into reading shit

If you're getting trouble on conjugations, I'd say yeah.
Read up some more grammar, they aren't too large, at least get particles and conjugations done, then you'll probably enjoy reading/playing more.

Or just read and understand this pic related (took me some time to completely understand it, and it's pretty good) and you should be good.

The translation quality isn't the issue. I think I do a decent job translating the ideas. The part I'm concerned about is learning from it.

>>143844805
I've gotten a bit of a hold on particles, both from Tae Kim and seeing them in action. I'm not too awfully concerned about them. Aside from kanji/vocabulary, its the conjugations that I struggle with. There's so many different forms, and while JParser/Mecab tells me which form it is, it's hard for me to tell what the root word was.

Thanks for the image though. My issue with conjugations is that they're all over the place in Tae Kim's guide, so I never know where to search.

>translating
Not the right way to go about learning a language. Translating is converting ideas from one language to another. This means that in order to translate, you need to fully (and I mean fully) understand the ideas that are being formed in the original language. Only then can you begin the process of translation.
In the end it's not a process that improves your comprehension of Japanese at all. Rather, it's one that improves your ability to form sentences in English out of differently structured or more abstract ideas.

>There's so many different forms
Japanese conjugations are almost painfully easy. There aren't many forms at all, and moreover the only one with any detailed rules to it is the past tense/て form for godan verbs.
Memorizing る/う/つ→った、く→いた、ぐ→いだ、ぬ/む/ぶ→んだ、す→した should be the only hurdle you face.
Everything else is based on the five vowel sounds and will come naturally from watching cartoons.

I think translating has it's merits, maybe just for me, but when I'm reading and I don't fully understand something I think something along _"I got a glimpse of the meaning"_ and move on.

When I'm translating (and not guesslating) though, I'm forced to completely understand and ask until it's pretty clear because I must make sense of it in another language as well.

So in a way, it helps (helped me at least) improve the comprehension.
>>
>>143846287
What is this ”向こうの言葉" that he is referring to?

>>
>>143846327
>I think something along _"I got a glimpse of the meaning"_ and move on.
this is fine

but I think you misunderstood what translation is
translation is the step that comes after comprehension, and requires 100% comprehension to go over well
you do not, and cannot possibly have 100% comprehension at a beginner level of anything but the simplest sentences, which, due to their simplicity, are going to help your overall translation skill very little (if you're aiming to be a translator in the future)
translation is a step I'm suggesting you not do, because it doesn't work without full comprehension, and is a waste of time if your end goal is anything other than improving specifically your ability to translate
making sense of japanese in english isn't your goal, and doesn't help you meet your goal of making sense of japanese in an abstract sense, because it assumes you already did that beforehand
it's impossible to go straight from japanese→english unless you're a machine, and even for machines that method is flawed and fucks up constantly
instead, as a human, you go from japanese→abstract understanding→english
that third step doesn't need to be there
just attain a level of comprehension you feel comfortable with for any given sentence and move on, no need to rubik's cube it into eigo

Do you get it? Could there be a も after 読み解く? I'm pretty sure he's saying that his comprehension and reading speed has increased but the も and 向こうの言葉 thing threw me off. I guess it was a book he read to get better at the language?

向こうの言葉を読み解く is a relative clause modifying スピード

Although being gramatically correct that sentence doesn't fit with native speakers speech patterns. Nobody uses "the speed of" that way.
>how can it NOT be awkward
Just rewrite the sentence as if you were the one saying it.
>>
>>143847441
his sentence was a tae kim-esque translation of the japanese structure so of course it is going to be awkward

the oddness in his grammar stems from multiple deliberate choices like usning 'too' instead of 'also' to match the も structure and opening with the strange phrase 'the speed of analyzing <language>' when a casual way to put it in english would be 'my <language> reading speed'

don't worry about it and please don't discuss english grammar anymore in the japanese thread for fuck's sake
