So I have a novel that I have as a text file that I'm going to read in browser. Are there any extensions aside from rikai that would be useful for something like that? Also I swear I heard something about pressing a key to automatically add words to anki; is there any guide out there for how to set that up?
>>
Holy fuck. How do you guys handle dealing with these one use specific situation kanji. I'm up to like 1200+ individual characters and it's starting to get to the point where I just don't fucking care anymore. I no longer wish to do anki, but I'm unable to stop because I know if I do I'll just get assraped the next time I feel like starting and it will be impossible to start up again.

Also, I usually do 25 new cards with 140~160 review and I spend about an hour and a half on it normally. I feel like it's a bit much for every single fucking day when I also work full time.

I have fallen behind on Anki and currently have 3000+ pending reviews. I try doing them every day, but grinding through 250 a day sometimes take too long. I don't have much free time due to my work and some health issues.

I do read every day, but the catch is, it's all doujins I read on my cellphone while fapping. So that works reasonably well if it's words I already know reasonably well, but looking up any kanji I don't know is a chore.

I don't know what I hoped to achieve with this post, just wondering if other anons have the same problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't kanji study kind of pointless?

Or well, not pointless, but incredibly inefficient, easily 80% of the time when I get a card wrong in my RTK deck, it's not because I forgot the kanji, or forgot how to draw the kanji, but because I forgot what english keyword goes with which kanji, or got two similar english keywords mixed up, which doesn't exactly seem like something I really need to know in the grand scheme of things anyway
>>
>>143774439

Hey /djt/ what do you think is the best way to learn grammar?
What book or site do you think is the best resource and what did or do you do to not forget what you learned?

I personally read through "Japanese the Manga Way" first, I acquired a very very basic knowledge of how Japanese works, at least easy things like particles are explained rather easy to understand, but when it comes to conjugations or shit like ba forms I'm pretty lost as the few examples aren't enough to get a feeling for it.

I had fun reading it due to the funny manga panels, but as learning resource it's trash imo.

Please don't just say X or Y is shit and tell me what you like or dislike about it.

If you want to retain the ability to write you've gotta do something like RTK really, which yes takes forever

You could alternatively just learn how to write radicals, which wouldn't take very long at all and would allow you to know the stroke order of any kanji, but you wouldn't necessarily be able to write them from memory

Learning kanji is easy. Remembering shapes of entre words and hoping to pick up some kanji from vocab isn't. It's an idiotic menial task that makes core decks unbearable and results in 出来ない駄目人s with sub 90% retention who spend most of the time relearning stuff they forgot.

Well I don't think I'm too good at it either and my english sucks but here's what I can think of:

> 壮絶に寝過ごしたワケ
I did ("grand" adjective here) overslept indeed
- ワケ gives/explain reason so just a simple affirmation might fall a bit short of it's meaning

> だが、奇病ではなく、
however, it wasn't from a strange illness,
- Like someone said, strange, not serious

> 冷凍睡眠というなんとか俺の理解できる理由だ。
but something I can only understand as a freezing, cold sleep.
(might need some context help here)
- "rather" feels really, really lacking, and なんとか adds meaning to it as he/she isn't sure of what it is. 俺の理解できる理由だ might be just an "I understand" affirmation but if you're translating the more complete the better right?

This reminded me when I read something with 名器 and someone translated that as "amazing!"
It wasn't wrong in the context but it's like the original being a well worded classical work and translated as some random uneducated dude speaking.
>>

Here, have some reading comprehension practice to get the day started!

>>143782278
That's obvious too. 壮絶に is used there with 寝過ごした to lampshade how abnormal level of "oversleeping" it was. Of course normally 壮絶に isn't something you'd use with oversleeping, just as oversleeping isn't something you'd use about being cryogenically frozen. But together it works. This much is again obvious.

You need to abandon the chains of literal meaning and start understanding more 比喩的な meanings.

Not that I know of.

It's pretty straight forward, for the most part.
You click ">10 minutes", and it holds it on the stack for roughly that long. If you're going through your cards fast, then naturally, you're going to have cards stack up faster.

It's timer based from what I understand, so going faster doesn't mean you're going to get the red cards sooner.

Yes, actually. I am not going to link them though because you would just be wasting your time. Such programs would indeed be very helpful, but the problem is Japanese has no spaces so computer text parsing is very difficult, and running it through these programs results in tons of nonexistent vocabulary entries being created that were not in the original material. Not to mention that this is a fools' errand anyway, since just because a word isn't in your Anki deck doesn't mean you don't know it. Doing it the way you propose would result in hundreds to thousands of redundant words depending on the length of your source material. Yes, mining words intermittently is annoying but that's why many recommend VNs as starter material since they are easier to mine from. And if you don't want to do that, there's always the Yotsuba Reading Pack for volumes 1 and 2, which will get yout through those no problem.

If you still want to try this out the tools are hidden away somewhere in the depths of koohii and JA-Dark. You may also have success checking LOGH anon's posts in the archive.

I did 30 a day at first but towards the end started slacking and only did 15-20. Hardest cards apparently (with 4 lapses each) were 秒, 返, and 惰, although they seem easy now that I've done vocab.
>>
I feel like I'm not really progressing. I finished TK and am 2000~ words into core and do 1 hour of reading everyday, but pretty much every more complicated line I don't get, and I don't know how to figure it out. So I just look at the words in it and continue on. Does "reading more" really work, or what can I do to dissect sentences to better understand them?

I'm following Tae Kim, and I'm having a bit of a hard time holding on to grammar studies. Thank you for the input! I had a lot of people saying to do grammar before kanji and vocab, but when looking at the vocab study guides, I don't know what any of the kanji mean, or what any of the put together kana mean (maybe not ANY, but the majority of it I don't know. Just how to say it and read it.)

My prioritization should be vocab (kana and learning kanji), and once I have some basic vocab down, move on to grammar, and begin to study both in tandem since the grammar will also come with reading?
>>
>>143788808
It takes years to learn a language, you're not going to notice your progression because it's spread out over such a long period of time, but it is happening, keep reading and you will progress

You should however make sure that you're making an effort to look up and understand new grammar that you come across, it's all well and good spending 2 seconds looking up new vocab, but you have to do the same thing with grammar, otherwise your progress will legitimately be slow

Why does core have 異常 as exceptional, extraordinary making it sound like something positive, when jisho has it as strangeness, abnormality making it sound negative?

It's not necessarily wrong, just very poorly worded. Core is full of shit like that.

Half the time you can barely tell if a word is a verb or not because whoever made it refused to put "to x" and just puts things like "comb" next to words like "hair." Is it "comb" or "to comb?" You don't know unless you look at the part of speech. Although that's a shit example, people starting out can't tell the difference.

My personal experience has been that if I speed through it, I run into an issue towards the very end where I don't get the full 10 minute interval before my review cards get sent to the top of the stack.

It fucks with my retention if I don't at least slow down after running out of blue/green cards. Cycling through them too often causes me to memorize the order of the cards so that I'm doing a process-of-elimination rather than actual recall.

Might be a dumb question but:
Referring to what Yotsuba says in the bottom right panel,
from what I recall in Tae Kims grammar guide, the 事がある form indicates that the event exists, i.e -> its already happened
But in this context that clearly isnt the case, so im assuming 事がある can also be used to indicate events that you intend to bring about/ make happen?

I hope some of you can help.

So last week I decided to finally start and learn japanese.

I already memorized all kana. And am starting to study kanji.

The only problem I have is that almost every teaching guide and sources only focus on recognizing characters. And not on how to learn the actual meaning of the words.

I'm not actually familiar with the japanese language like a lot of hardcore guys that know thousands of japanese words but still can't read/write them (otaku).

The reason I want to learn Japanese is so that I can finally play all those netorare eroge that are untranslated.

Therefor the specific words that I need to learn are very specific.

Can you guys recommend something?

I am also a very fast learner. I started studying English less than a year ago. And I am as good as finished with it already. Although I suspect Japanese to take a longer time due to less available content to learn from.

I prefer a super high study load with faster results over slow and steady studying.

Thanks.

I assume what you're thinking of is shit like 食べた事がある, which would mean "I have eaten that before", notice that the verb before こと is past tense in these cases, it's the same concept as how it's being used in that frame, "食べた = have eaten before 事がある = thing exists

Nothing. You're done until they come back around in 7-10 minutes.

>>143797126
If you know the kanas already, I'd suggest picking a grammar guide for now.

You'll get some basic vocab, but more importantly, you'll get to know the "rules" of it.
I'd recommend this one, it's very short and mostly complete:
http://amaterasu.tindabox.net/guide/

Just know that you can't think in english or whatever your native language is, "think" in japanese. That is, don't try to find matching words in your language, but think about the concepts of the words you learn and you'll find it easier to deal with vocab.

With grammar done, you can start reading stuff (start with basics) with a dictionary along while studying kanjis.

This should be fastest way I can think of to understand stuff, everything else you'll get as experience.

Tested by myself, self-taught japanese in about 3 months and I can read my untranslated pandas mostly fine - though some expressions/sentences still prove a challenge but nothing that asking around doesn't solve.

I used Anki but put to much emphasis on review, I adjusted it all the time but at 900-1000 I would still try to go through a third of that for review, that was like an hour and a half to two hours, and like 8 hours for 50 letters if I was lucky, it got really difficult though even with a lot of time to learn new ones and keep them for the next day, it did keep though I'll give it that, until I quit anyway, now I just kinda remember

Alcohol is an acquired taste. And when you drink regularly the calories don't count. Also, only teenagers throw up from drinking. Are your acquaintances the same age as you?

There was a time in America when not drinking was considered odd. "You don't drink? What are you, a homosexual?"

I know you're not American since you call calories "kcals" but whatever. Being slender, attractive, and a faggot that doesn't drink is a recipe for people treating you the way they do. You probably walk around with a dick in your ass talking about how much healthier you are than they are. You deserve any ill treatment you get.

But hey, fret not. Being a drunk gets you the same treatment. It doesn't even matter, honestly. Just don't spew your bullshit here like you're superior.

Sure, alcohol is a poison. But so are carbohydrates. And I bet you shovel them in your face, in large amounts like 300g+, on a daily basis. Fuck off, vegan.
>>
>>143803631
>And when you drink regularly the calories don't count.

That has nothing to do with calories counting; and all the alcohol abusers I know (here in the USA) are slightly overweight.

Beer isn't a magical CONSUME CALORIES WITHOUT YOUR BODY TAKING IN CALORIES potion.

>If we didn't evolve to consume alcohol, it would kill us.
Bonafide invalid logic, anon. We consume things we could not have possibly evolved to consume without dying all day every day.

Regular consumption of alcohol did not come about until *after* the stabilization of agricultural methodology ~6k~10k years ago, which is not a significant evolutionary timeframe.

Do research. When you're an alcoholic your body doesn't "burn" calories from alcohol, it simply disposes of them. If you know fat alcoholics then they were fat before they started drinking or they're not real alcoholics.

>Bonafide invalid logic, anon.

It's really not. Alcohol existed before agriculture. Even moose can consume alcohol and often do so to get drunk. You're talking out of your ass.

I'm having trouble with this word(s).
文章の上手い下手は必要はあります。

More precisely the 上手い下手. I know separated they are skillful and bad at/unskillful. But I'm not sure how this fits into this sentence.

I've tried a few dictionary sites and machine translation sites but they all said "good bad sentences". One particular site translated it to "handwriting of sentences", but I wasn't able to find any other evidence it means handwriting.

What do you guys think this means?

>Do research. When you're an alcoholic your body doesn't "burn" calories from alcohol, it simply disposes of them.
That's because the metabolism ceases to function properly. It doesn't mean the calories stop counting. They just damage your body instead of contributing to energy storage.

>It's really not.
Read my post again. Something existing in nature doesn't justify your literally delusional logic that we would die if we drank it if we did not evolve to consume it. Hint: Things that do funny effects to us without killing us are short-circuiting normal biological processes.

Damaging your body is counting. Energy storage isn't the only thing calories affect.

>But even animals drink, anon.
Animals don't mass produce alcoholic beverages and destroy their bodies. Yes, they'll consider fermented fruit a treat, but that has nothing to do with evolution.

>What are you trying to prove?
That you're an insane drunkard projecting nonsense onto the internet because someone posted about not drinking in response to a post about drinking in a thread that has nothing to do with drinking. Plus, there are children here, and having them pick up your delusional mindspew as justification for destroying their underdeveloped organs would be evil.

as far as "panaceas for the soul" go, alcohol is pretty mediocre at best. I'm pretty sure the only people who are actually "into" drinking are high schoolers, college kids who act like high schoolers, and those who've never done anything beyond drinking and maybe a joint or two. I don't really know a good way of putting it into words but even the positive aspects of being drunk have a kind of "grimy" feel to them. Other than the social aspect of communal drinking, I really can't think of a single aspect of alcohol that isn't achieved to a greater extent by another substance
>>
>>143807383

Alcohol is cheaper, legal, and more socially acceptable.

I also enjoy weed. But it doesn't come close to the fun you can have while drunk.
