That depends on what you actual define as "actual combat", all the strong mages in the series are more or less specialized in something, and are more suited for different kinds of battle scenarios, overall Hayate has the higher power leveled, followed by Nanoha and Fate, and then Signum. In straight 1v1 duels or sparring Signum seems to have the advantage since she is very strong at close range combat and can tank and get close to her opponents with ease, I can only see Fate being more suited for this kind of battle but I don't think we will never see her seriously sparring with anyone anymore, or having a real 1v1 fight against a strong opponent for that matter.

In terms of firepower alone, yes.

She's very powerful, but relegated to rear support roles because she's a nuclear bomber that cannot do normal combat at all and her spells take forever to go off.
She's powerful if she has fighters on the front keeping the enemy busy and buying her time for her spells to be ready.
The reason why the Yagamis are stated to be unstoppable in a team battle in Vivid is simply due to how well they are as a team. The roles they have would probably go like this
>Front attacker: Vita/Signum
>Guard wing: Zafira
>Center guard: Shamal
>Rear support: Hayate/Rein
Their strategy would simply be "Buy time for Hayate to nuke the field", and this is made even better by the fact that Signum and Vita are tanky as fuck and decently fast so its not easy to get past them to attack Shamal, much less Hayate.

Nanoha and Fate is more well-rounded, with Nanoha leaning towards shooting and being more tanky and Fate leaning towards melee and being fast with minimal protection for more fast.

Air is supposed to be a direct indicator of combat ability with a usual +- room for error.
Composite ranks are based on thing like unnatural high amounts of mana and other stuff that do not necessarily translate into direct combat ability and can mean that a SSS composite can lose to an A air rank.

For example Fate lacks defense so much a single hit can kill her, but for that her base speed is in Force already at lightspeed (they have a short extra page after she protected Nanoha from the Axe guy that teleports, who at first thinks she is actually a teleporter, but then corrects himself to her being just as fast as light, this was in her base form without augmentations).

They aren't fading.

They are just becoming less connected to Hayate, if anything disastrous happens to them, Hayate cannot reboot the Guardian Knight program(Like she did when she renamed the Book) to bring them back.
The connection to Hayate fading also meant that they are recovering from their injuries slower(Presumably due to the drop in extra magic coming from Hayate), also when the connection goes out completely, Hayate most probably won't even be able to instinctively tell that one of the her knights is severely wounded like she did for Shamal and Zafira when they went down in StrikerS.


One interesting to note about Hayate is that her mana pool is so big, she was presumably giving extra power to the 4 knights(who had their own linker core and everything) via the link to them, and her mana pool is apparently not at all affected by that.

BDs are a bit awful. Ugly filter instead of using some neutral upscaler like on saner digital re-releases, sadly.

The lineart doesn't look that bad if you focus on the detail-less big face shots, but when there is tinier stuff on screen, it gets fucked up and looks disfigured. Also I think they managed to fuck up the color balance a bit.

I will personally stick to R2J rips. The DVDs could take a hardcore encode with yatta and everything, but it is a bit too much work.

I was wondering about this. Why do actual battles contradict this notion? Force has her getting hit by Cypha's amped sword strikes and only suffering shallow cuts. Or is it only little Fate with the weak barrier jacket? I remember Signum, although not trying to kill her, whacking her pretty good during their first fight. Cutting Bardiche in half proves it was a very strong attack regardless. Jail had a spell potent enough to break her Zanber and block Plasma Lancers, but an energy blast to the face only knocked Fate down without injury. Fate also reflexively uses defenser in concentrated areas during A's to block melee attacks that she manages to not avoid, but it's also the auto-guard spell.

Well, after the original series, Fate is pretty much on par with Nanoha in power. She even has an equivalent spell to SLB and Exelion Buster afterwards. What really puts Nanoha over is the blaster bits and blaster system. Nanoha is always tankier, though.

I know Fate can get fucked up easily during Sonic Form, but I think it's possible her low defense otherwise is blown out of proportion.

Would be great to actually know what constitutes each of the rankings.We know overall rankings involve skill but spell rankings should be based on at least a standardized system.

Even so, I enjoy Nanohaverse's magic system since it one of the few fleshed out ones at least that I know of. The only one I can think of that wins in terms of details in Nasuverse.

Wrong question, battle 1 was completely tossed out and replaced with bland "let's just get Fate and Nanoha beaten ASAP" stub. It was one of the worst parts of the movie, complete with them just being laid somewhere sadly after being drained out, which was completely anticlimactic compared to the S1.

The fight in the first two eps and the aftermath in ep3 were one of the best parts of As, too. Movie is really a joke with its screenplay. Still pissed about that.

I am going to side with a scrapping of the TH canon itself because of the fact that Nanoha becomes a magical girl in a totally different manner from MSLN. The first season falls apart completely if you don't look at it as a lesbian love story with some mahou shoujo trappings. As an action/adventure story it doesn't work because it lacks a proper climax (the Big Bad just falls over dead on her own) and has multiple episodes with no action at all, and what else is there? School drama? Pfft, it's not drama when everybody is best friends with everybody.

Basically, it's all about Nanoha trying to hit on Fate, and finally succeeding when she was at her most aggressive (proving once again that rape is love).

Actually, Nanoha succeeded by finally getting Precia to go all uber-bitch and denounce Fate's existence as a worthless hunk of tube-grown flesh and then gave her the metaphorical hug of a life time.
