anon-kuns pls help. Adjectives and nouns were a fucking dream compared to verbs.

When does it end? There's so many fucking conjugation rules. The tenses, the stems, the polite forms, the verb particles, jesus.

Verbs are the biggest topic within the language right? Tell me it doesn't get any worse than this.

What do I read to get this shit down
>>
>>143711218
Verb conjugations are all part of "beginner grammar". Might as well complain about learning kana.

it doesn't get any easier than japanese grammar, the hard part of this language is kanji

Some native Spanish speakers have trouble pronounce the English R sound and vice versa.

looks like there is an important difference between wanikani and anki in how they handle wrong cards. With wanikani, since you have to write the answer, you can decide not to check what the correct answer was. If you don't, and you get it right later, it counts as correct.

I'm not sure what effect this has on remembering and on the mental effort to do your reps.
>>
>>143721863
What anime? Most anime has a pretty low vocab count. Honestly, if you know 2k+, you should be good from at least a vocab perspective on a wide variety of anime.

Obviously your listening skills also have to be competent.

Ok, here's the word list generated by JTAT for episode 7 of K-ON, filtering out any word that appears in the 2015 version of Core2k

Of course there's different conjugations of verbs and different okurigana not getting filtered but you can still see that core2k doesn't contain a lot of common words like お知らせ and 見かねる.

I really have to stop trying to translate manga when I barely know what I'm doing. Was trying my hand at translating a chapter of something for a project done by a couple of friends of mine and when my translator friend(who has studied regularly for 5+ years) got back to me with some notes on what I did, most of it was correct but some things were totally off on my part and it made me wonder what the fuck was going through my head.

I guess long story short don't try to translate shit for practice, it doesn't help.

>>
>>143731397
What I was trying to get across is that translation is a name for a process completed after you have a full Japaense understanding of a sentence or passage, and doing it before you can attain that is misguided.
The point where you run into a sentence you don't have full confidence in is the point where you should skip it, or stop translating and learn more Japanese before trying again.
Additionally, if you can only comprehend simple Japanese sentences well, this will mean translation for you is very simple because transferring simple meanings to English is very simple. You won't get real good translation practice until you're faced with something more complex and nuanced.

>It is still go practice and you only learn by doing.

When you begin presenting specialized information to people who aren't in a position to know that information, you're taking on the role of an authority, not a student. As the listener isn't in a position to know better, they'll assume that what you're saying is true. When the person who's taken on the role of the authority isn't qualified to be in that role, this is where the spread of incorrect information often begins.

Also, beyond that, it's inefficient as practice material. Your goal is to leave English behind and get into that Japanese mindset, not constantly go back to English. It's also a waste of time that could be better spent acquiring more exposure.

Learn Japanese, then you can begin thinking about translating Japanese if you're still interested.

If you haven't read the DJG series I would recommend doing so. Learning how the particles work in a complete and detailed way is best to do first, then if you forget or unsure you could mouse over it with rikai for help. There are some grammar points that are not in the dictionaries so you'd have to google it or look on weblio for clarification.

「俺が言いたいのはこんな勉強が必要なのかって話だ」

「絶対に必要だわ」

「……アドリブというかその場の雰囲気で 対処すればいいんじゃないのか?」

Why are they talking about ad-libs? What does アドリブというかその場の雰囲気で 対処すればいいんじゃないのか? mean? And at the end is he saying he doesn't remember making that his selling point?

Tomorrow I finish core6k. Even though it's only the beginning, it feels nice to finally clear this step.

>>
>>143738977
I have more than 10,000 unseen cards from mining and can easily add dozens in a day if I read a bit, so yeah.

At least it is nice to be able to read stuff that can't be text hooked without trying to handwrite a kanji in google translate or finding it by radicals every 2 minutes.
>>
>>143738872
adlib means spontaneously, dealing with something "on the go" etc. Should be easy to figure out now.
>>
>>143739131
Obviously not. I studied mined words for a while since 2k (stopped it recently to focus on finishing core), I read and I study kanji production and handwriting at the same time.

Do I just need more context? Am I just retarded? Please help.

Okay so this has been going on for about a week now: Anki always starts me off nice and slow, with maybe 15-20 cards on rotation at most, but towards the end it would start dumping a ton of cards on me, at around 40 cards on rotation, many of which are cards from the day before, which makes it extremely hard to remember. Any idea why this is happening and what can I do to stop it?

There's no need to, it comes with a text parser as well. You just pick the executable, it auto grabs a bunch of text hooks, you pick the one with the actual game text, then it parses it for you like rikai.

I had no trouble learning so far even though I have a full time job.

>>
>>143742045
I know that feeling man. When I'm not in Japanese class I have a tendency to just do anki vocab and chat with Japanese friends through text. I'll go like an entire week without studying grammar besides doing verb conjugations. I'm even worse about keeping up with kanji reviews.

Does anyone that has gone through Japanese at uni/HS level have any advice about kanji? My school does Genki 1/2 for first 4 semesters and I've really struggled with the kanji. I know there are better methods than what they tell you to do (rote memorization) but to really benefit from something like kanjidamage or Heisig I kinda have to just power through all the jouyou. I'm kind of worried that if I do try to learn all the jouyou that I'll end up forgetting a lot of the ones I don't use much.

I don't care about it as much as anime, so I don't mind sacrificing enjoyment to learn Japanese from it. I need to reach my final and most powerful form before watching Japanese raw

>>
>>143751819
If you want to be able to watch anime why not watch anime
>>
Th-thanks for the explanation.
>>
>>143751894
Because I need to be able to enjoy it 100%. I can't taint it by using it as slow learning material
>>
>>143752062
In that case watch an anime you don't really care about but curious to watch anyway, that's what I do.

Feels good finally using my fucking Summer to good use. I hope to at least get 600 hours in total before the end of September.

Actually, that was a slight misspeak, I needed it the most when first learning kanji, but I need it the most for learning/maintaining vocabulary now.

Replace "need" with "use" and it makes sense.

That's just how anki works
>>
>>143752495
I won't get that many hours but I hope for at least 400 anime episodes or so. Gotta have perfect listening by the end of the summer. Or at least good enough that I only get lost on long sentences, and the problem isn't picking up the words

I NEED it
>>143752716
Yeah they do. Or they did a year ago. I stopped coming here awhile ago. Only came back to show my 822 day dick and complain. Will leave soon.

If anyone wants my pro advice, it's to close your internet browser throughout the day with only an hour or two allotted to checking social media and shitposting. Nothing sucks up more time than the internet. Seriously, listen to this. You'll study so much more and have a much better life if you're not passively browsing the internet for the majority of your day.

Anyway, that's that. Time to leave the thread for more months. Good studying hunters.

If it's written in kanji originally, of course. The question is directed towards if it is written in kana in the original material.

Is there any difference between そう and よう as suffixes?

まもなく雨が降りそうだ。

まもなく雨が降りようだ。

The first phrase was an example in jisho.org wheras the second one I made myself so there might be a mistake there. I'm sorry if that is the case.

様(よう) doesn't go after the stem like そう, so you wouldn't say 降りよう, you would say 降るよう.

よう is not used to make predictions, but merely to state the situation or appearance of something. So in that particular example, it sounds weird to say よう because of the way the sentence starts with まもなく.
You could say 雨が降るようだ, which would mean something like "it appears rain is falling." It's essentially an observation of the present, or a recounting of what a past event seems to have been.
たくさん雨が降ったようだ。→It appears lots of rain fell.
あの人をどこかで見たようだ。→It appears I've seen that person before. (might require weird context to actually say this)

雨が降りそう on the other hand means "it looks like rain is going to fall," and is something you might say if the sky was clouded up.
